What does v short hair say about a woman?

Bluesheep8 · 24/09/2017 10:04

Just that really. I was having my (very short) hair cut yesterday and my hairdresser and I were talking and she said that she thought that women with short hair had to be very confident because they had nothing to 'hide behind' and that short hair suggested self assurance to her. I've never thought of myself as self assured so found this really interesting...so, whether you have short hair or not, what does very short hair say to you about a woman?

This!
It really is a gift that keeps on giving.

As much as I love short hair, I don’t look anything like those lovely young women featured upthread. I’m 55 and on a bad day, a tired/stressed/worn down by stuff day, I prefer to not have to “do” my hair and just scoop it up in a messy pony.

The last time mine was really short, I felt old. And I looked like my mother 😐

stevie69 · 25/09/2017 14:06

In my case, it apparently means that I'm gay. Short hair, stocky build and wearing jeans/trousers 99% of the time as well as quite plain tops (big shirts, sweatshirts, fleeces). I'm actually not, but tbh if that's what people think its fine by me...

Ah, you see .... I get the same; I have a shaved head and a football season ticket so I must be gay, right? Wrong! But it definitely does matter to me. Not because there's anything wrong with being gay; no. Merely because I like hot young men, rather than hot young women, hitting on me Blush

stevie69 · 25/09/2017 14:11

Of course, you have to find a barber willing to actually cut your hair as most of them seem convinced that all women are emotional fuck ups who imagine they want barbered hair but it cry if they actually get it

So glad you said this. I thought it was just me. Yes, a lot of them do put you through a full blown counselling session before they'll do it , don't they? And yes, I've been asked if I'll cry too. And the answer .....NO!!! The lovely Matthew now does mine. He was quite happy to shave it for me but preferred I wait for another stylist if I wanted it cut as he only specialises in working with clippers. I asked if it could go shorter than number one and he said he'd got a 0.5. No questions. No stress. Yaay for my lovely barber Grin

stevie69 · 25/09/2017 14:13

Mine says it makes myvoverall look a lot sharper and less middle aged than a utterly, utterly, stupifyingly boring bob.

It also says I think it looks ace, and I really couldn't give a teeny tiny shit what anyone else thinks.

Loving it. You go, girl Grin

stevie69 · 25/09/2017 14:16

Lesbian, butch, can't be bothered.

Well, my fair weather friend .......... you're wrong AGAIN!

guilty100 · 25/09/2017 14:20

Interesting to hear about the counselling offered by barbers!

I'm amazed at how very, very much better the haircut DH gets at the barbers is than mine. The finish is about 10 times more careful. And his costs £15 while mine costs £45.

heron98 · 25/09/2017 15:45

I have long hair precisely because it's low maintenance. I wash it, tie it up in a loose bun and let it out when it's a bit drier. That's it.

When I had short hair I was forever messing about trying to get it flat, and always having to get it cut every few weeks.

Never again.

WanderingTrolley1 · 25/09/2017 17:13

It seems nobody can have an opinion on here.

AlternativeTentacle · 25/09/2017 17:22

Yes, butch lesbos or 'can't be arsed' of the world, how dare you fight back against the polished long haired lovelies. How dare you have an opinion about yourselves. Confused

stevie69 · 25/09/2017 17:29

It seems nobody can have an opinion on here

Course you can. If I remember rightly, you've had one. Some share it; others don't. It's the way of the world Smile

"I have long hair precisely because it's low maintenance. I wash it, tie it up in a loose bun and let it out when it's a bit drier."

If you do this and your hair looks nice, you are genetically gifted and I am basically consumed with envy. My sister is the same AND, to rub salt into the wound, her hair is a nicer colour than mine. The gene lottery is so unfair.

Madeyemoodysmum · 25/09/2017 18:23

As far as conventional beauty standards go I've never seen a woman look better with short hair than long.

Ha ha. How ridiculous

How about
twiggy
Halle berry
Scarlette johaanson
Kiera knightly
Sharon stone

All look amazing with short hair

BlueEyedWonder · 25/09/2017 18:50

My hair was super short and blonde at the start of the year and it said "I want to be like Michelle Williams". Her haircuts are an obsession for me!

I'm now growing into a short ear length bob.

surferjet · 25/09/2017 18:58

Those women are all exceptionally beautiful Madeyemoodysmum & would look lovely with any hairstyle.
Your average woman with short hair looks nothing like those models/ actresses.

Dustbunny1900 · 25/09/2017 19:22

I keep the left side of my head buzzed on a number 2 in an "undercut" and it's sooo freeing! I have a considerable amount of hair and it feels great not be shedding and swealtering and frizzing as much. Plus half the conditioner is required. Felt like William Wallace yelling "frreeeeedommm!" 😂

But I keep the right side a long safe blond to flip over for work and other places because my work would frown on it and I don't want the comments and nastiness and bullshit for daring to not conform as a woman. So yea I crumple under the pressure to be "feminine" because it makes life easier but hats off to those with more nads than me. Buzzed head feels incredible

Madeyemoodysmum · 25/09/2017 19:33

Surfer
Yes they are all beautiful women but I honestly think they look better with shorter hair than long.

So normal women also can look better with shorter hair too. It's ridiculous to claim women are not bothered. Given up or lesbian
If they decide this is the way they want to look. As some posters have

I've had long hair. Mid length and short
Blonde red and brunette

I'd hate to be the same all the time.

WhatsItAllAbout123 · 25/09/2017 19:41

I had my hair cut to an inch long on top at 17 years old. It's not been any longer than three inches long in the 20 years since, and that was just for my wedding day (I had a huge fascinater instead of a veil and needed big hair to balance it), it tends to be between 1/2" and 2" long on top.

Short hair says nothing at all about me. The clothes I wear say nothing about me either. People can choose to think what they like about me from my appearance, but I choose to not be interested in those thoughts. I wear my hair (and my clothes) in a way that makes me feel good, end of story.

I don't jump to conclusions about people based on their appearance either.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 25/09/2017 20:17

Depends really. I'm depressed by short hair 'for practical reasons' meh

Short hair for me was a lot more work than long - it can only be worn done

I think it can look really edgy and sharp - Mia farrow and Judy dench for example. I think you need to have striking features to pull it off though.

I think lots of women look amazing with short hair and very feminine and stylish

Queenofthedrivensnow · 25/09/2017 20:18

Meanwhile my mum cut her hair off when she left my dad. She looked great until she got to about 65 and decided to grow it long again. She looked like a mad witch! Now it's been shorn again she looks like a refined stylish lady again Grin

NameChangeFamousFolk · 25/09/2017 20:22

Sorry - I haven't read every reply, but to answer the OP...nothing. A short haircut tells me absolutely nothing. I know a few women with short hair, they're all very different.

Maybe I'd notice a very young woman with short hair these days, just because nearly every young woman I see has long hair, it seems. I'd probably think it looked nice and fresh, but no more than that.

user1487175389 · 25/09/2017 20:23

Why do women need something to hide behind? Bloody patriarchy infecting our hairdressers...

TheDowagerCuntess · 25/09/2017 20:37

& why do butch lesbians cut their hair short? because they're trying to look masculine.

Why would a woman who's attracted to women want to look 'masculine'...?

Some lesbians feel absolutely no need or desire to conform to patriarchal standards of beauty - so they just ... are.

They go out presenting themselves as themselves. Pretty much in exactly the same way that men do.

It's nothing to do with 'trying to look masculine'.

trilbydoll · 25/09/2017 20:41

Short hair is way more hassle than long hair isn't it? I can just chuck mine up in a ponytail, short hair needs to be styled. At least I thought it did, maybe it's just my lego hair that looks shit short Grin

CountFosco · 26/09/2017 07:52

If long hair was less hassle than short hair then men would have long hair. Short hair can be styled to within an inch of its life if you want but if I want to I can run a comb through it and it will be dry within a few minutes in a perfectly reasonable shape.
