What does v short hair say about a woman?

Just that really. I was having my (very short) hair cut yesterday and my hairdresser and I were talking and she said that she thought that women with short hair had to be very confident because they had nothing to 'hide behind' and that short hair suggested self assurance to her. I've never thought of myself as self assured so found this really interesting...so, whether you have short hair or not, what does very short hair say to you about a woman?

I understand what your hairdresser means. I have often looked at cute pixie cuts in magazines and online when needing inspiration for a new hairstyle, but when it actually comes to getting it done I chicken out because I'm not brave enough to have such short hair.

And then I look at these women getting buzzcuts lately and love it, but again I've not the confidence to go any shorter than shoulder length.

I think there's short and short. MIL who is 82 has had a short cut all her life. She has thick wavy hair. But she had it cut badly in a sort of style seen on old fashioned teachers. She was grey at 30ish and never coloured it. She wore Clark's brown sandals. No make-up. Very old fashioned clothes.

There's a middle way between preened fashionista and that.

BusterGonad · 24/09/2017 10:58

Women have short hair because they like short hair, it doesn't have to mean anything.
I personally think though that to pull short hair off you have to be quite attractive and slim with good bone structure otherwise you going into frump territory imo, I speak as someone who loves short hair and have had many a pixie cut (proper short crop not shoulder length what some people call short) in my time.
When I had short hair I made an extra effort with make up etc has the last thing I wanted was to look un feminine.

twinone · 24/09/2017 10:59

For me, it's a complete lack of flair to make long hair look nice. I have never had hair longer than shoulder length and even then I looked like Shaggy in Scooby-do Grin.
I hated it falling across my face at night and it would forever wake me up.

stevie69 · 24/09/2017 11:00

As far as conventional beauty standards go I've never seen a woman look better with short hair than long.

You haven't looked too hard then .......

Yvetteballs · 24/09/2017 11:00

As the owner of a bowling ball head, there's not a chance I could cut all my hair off, as much as I'd like not to have the hassle of drying and styling it.

AlternativeTentacle · 24/09/2017 11:00

I'm not shallow and vacuous at all

I have news for you...

Summerswallow · 24/09/2017 11:00

I feel like I'm not good-looking enough to have short hair- I don't have the bone structure and my chin has really disappeared these last few years. Those who say long hair is a refuge are right in my case at least.

stevie69 · 24/09/2017 11:02

I would think she can't be arsed to make an effort TBH .

Wow, how very ........... actually, I can't think of the word I want Blush

My hair is saved as close as it goes. I make lots of effort. With lots of things. And I look fab with my short hair. Trust me Wink

Tameagobairanois · 24/09/2017 11:03

I coudn't agree more bustergonad. When I had one particular short hair cut that was a mistake scalping I couldn't even go to sainsbury's without little earrings and a bit of lipstick. I know I chose 'prettier' colours. And I don't think I wore anything androgynous - half my wardrobe, until my hair grew back. I'm petite and not in any way fat, but I don't feel feminine enough for short hair Confused says who Maybe ridiculous. Hermione Grainger, Kate Mara I aint. I know we're always telling ourselves that women come in all shapes and sizes and while that is true the beauty standards women feel pressurised by are very narrow.

Hulder · 24/09/2017 11:04

Oh good grief.

Doesn't it just mean they have very short hair?

It could mean confidence, lack of confidence, chemo, crap hair, something to do with your social group, liking it that way, wanting something, low maintenance, not being that interested in hair, being very interested in hair - depending on cut, and so on and so forth.

When you see a bloke with short hair do you start wondering what his hair means?

stevie69 · 24/09/2017 11:04

If a woman is more average looking or plain, then long hair makes up for a multitude of sins.

It really doesn't. Take it from one who knows ..... Blush

TheRadiantAerynSun · 24/09/2017 11:06

I think it just says she likes short hair. I literally never think about other people's hair.

I had some great short haircuts when I was younger... even with my plain fat face.

I found it a lot of effort though. My hair is both baby soft and oily. Even a teeny tiny amount of product is too heavy for it. So I would wake up every day with greasy hair that stuck up like a turkey.

Long hair is much easier for me.

Trills · 24/09/2017 11:06

If you are unattractive and un-slim with un-good bone structure, does longer hair actually help? Or is it just that people who are these things should do their best to fade into the background?

mummyretired · 24/09/2017 11:08

It means that I swim a lot and I know it makes me look younger. I was amused to find that when I first had it cut short (as in the link Yvetteballs provided) new colleagues began addressing me in very inclusive language. I adjusted my trousers-and-stripy shirt work look to something more floral to compensate!

stevie69 · 24/09/2017 11:09

If you are unattractive and un-slim

None of us are. We're all amazing. And we're all beautiful. ALL OF US !!!!!

BusterGonad · 24/09/2017 11:10

Trills I think it does yes, as long hair is instantly a feminine trait, look at Katy Perry, she's not half as pretty with short hair and she's a gorgeous looking women, some women just don't look as attractive when they're mane is chopped off. It seems to instantly draw your eyes to their flaws which long hair hid!

Kikibanana86 · 24/09/2017 11:12

TBH I'm struggling to get my point across the way I want to, what I'm trying to say is that I do t think women with very short look attractive in my experience but on the other hand I'm aware that's because somewhere along the line I've internalised that women should A. Have long hair to be feminine and attractive and B. Be bothered about being those things in the first place.

Anatidae · 24/09/2017 11:12

Audrey Hepburn

gavel

Tameagobairanois · 24/09/2017 11:13

Katie Perry is conventionally pretty and yet she can't quite pull off short hair. That should scare the rest of us!

I'm joking!

I've had short hair many times. Not since I was 42 though. Wondering if I'm too old for short hair now at 47. It'd be less edgy and more descent in to invisibility now.

stevie69 · 24/09/2017 11:14

Short hair
Never even wear mascara let alone fake eyelashes
My own nails
My own natural skin colour

I'm boring aren't I grin

Nope. Not at all Grin

Kikibanana86 · 24/09/2017 11:15

Yes Audrey Hepburn looked beautiful with short hair but she still looked better with long imo Smile

Summerswallow · 24/09/2017 11:16

Trills I feel more attractive with longer hair- though not too long, collar-bone length. This does not mean I actually am more attractive though. The worst cut I had once was a bob- I felt so incredibly plain with this bob and ten years older even though there was nothing objectively wrong with the cut- it just made me feel dowdy- even though I love bobs on other people and had been inspired to get one by someone else's sharp bob. It's about how you see yourself and how you feel inside- but conditioned by society's norms, and I've obviously internalized long hair/feminine= attractive for me, and daren't shift from this as I don't feel like I have the great bone structure or real beauty that would allow me to do so.
