What does v short hair say about a woman?

Just that really. I was having my (very short) hair cut yesterday and my hairdresser and I were talking and she said that she thought that women with short hair had to be very confident because they had nothing to 'hide behind' and that short hair suggested self assurance to her. I've never thought of myself as self assured so found this really interesting...so, whether you have short hair or not, what does very short hair say to you about a woman?

Actually only person I can think of is Winona Ryder Grin

Kikibanana86 · 24/09/2017 11:17

I've seen her irl with both long and short and she looks better with short. I take it back! Still think the same in most cases though!

Bluesheep8 · 24/09/2017 11:17

I think Katy Perry looks better with short hair, really shows off her face imo

somewhere along the line I've internalised that women should A. Have long hair to be feminine and attractive and B. Be bothered about being those things in the first place.

Well put. It's scary sometimes to realise how much of what we believe to be "nice/attractive/desirable" is this kind of conditioning.

AlternativeTentacle · 24/09/2017 11:17

TBH I'm struggling to get my point across the way I want to, what I'm trying to say is that I do t think women with very short look attractive in my experience but on the other hand I'm aware that's because somewhere along the line I've internalised that women should A. Have long hair to be feminine and attractive and B. Be bothered about being those things in the first place.

Exactly. Shallow and vacuous.

ThisIsVeryImportant · 24/09/2017 11:18

My very long hair shows I can't be arsed to go to the hairdressers and pay their ridiculous prices so keep putting it off.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 24/09/2017 11:18

Linda Evangelista was a jobbing model til she had all her hair cut off...

Kikibanana86 · 24/09/2017 11:19

Oh fuck off!Grin

Kikibanana86 · 24/09/2017 11:20

You don't even know me. This whole topic is shallow and vacuous if you think about it. It's the style and beauty thread for fucks sake.

stevie69 · 24/09/2017 11:20

Yes Audrey Hepburn looked beautiful with short hair but she still looked better with long imo

She absolutely did not. But that's the beauty of life; we can agree to disagree. Debate, discussion: it's all good Smile

Yesyesyesyeswhatever · 24/09/2017 11:20

With a shaved head I've sometimes worn pink lacy baby doll dresses (Courtney Love style), as the resulting look is edgy rather than "twee". Now, with "longer hair" (a normal pixie crop, due to job hunting - wouldn't want silly prejudices to ruin my chances), I couldn't carry "girly" clothing off.

I've had both - long waist length, and the Hepburn do. Twice.

I think the shorter looked better when I was younger, its a pain to maintain because I could never find hairdressers who could cut it skilfully enough and it needed doing every few weeks.

It's back to waist length now, and that's primarily because I've given up. Short is harder and takes more work.

I'm saddened by the 'women must have long hair because otherwise you're not pretty' thing. Have you hair however the fuck you like. It's your hair, to suit you and your lifestyle, not something to turn you into a pretty trophy for others.

SilentlyScreamingAgain · 24/09/2017 11:22

It's amazingly emotive, isn't it?

I think hair length does seem to be a bit more uniform now than it was in previous decades. I wonder if that's because behaviours are seen as being less gendered, so appearance has become more so?

(I've got the kind of bald fade that someone's son was excluded from school for but I wear it with a nice bright lip to avoid confusion. ;-))

Parker231 · 24/09/2017 11:22

Very odd topic - surely someone has short hair because that's what they want (acknowledging medical reasons).

Very sad if someone chooses a hair length based on someone else's perceptions?

Summerswallow · 24/09/2017 11:29

Why is it 'odd' to read hair as a social signal? We get more choice than ever over how to style our hair, compared with the past- so that choice is more calculated -from people who have extensions to appear part of a particular social group, to those who 'choose not to choose' by having the most functional non-remarkable hair possible (although short hair like that is quite hard to maintain). Hair tells us a lot about a person, even if that person doesn't want to tell us anything! It's odd not to realise that the clothes you wear or the hairstyle you have sends off social signals, perhaps not even the ones you want, and that sometimes people deliberately play with these, avoid them or choose them- why not discuss this in a Style and Beauty section?!

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 24/09/2017 11:32

I was talking to my daughters the other day. I said 1) don't get a tattoo 2) get a piercing if you must - at least you can take it out 3) do whatever you like with your hair. It grows.

Mine has been everywhere between shaved and waist though it suits me best somewhere between bobbed and shoulder length.

Happily they seem to regard tattoos as the preserve of fat middle-aged people so I'm hoping we can dodge that particular bullet Grin

Bluesheep8 · 24/09/2017 11:34

Crikey!!.. an innocuous question on people's perceptions of something concerning style and beauty on the style and beauty board has certainly provoked some angry reactions. I'm sorry I asked now as my question seems to have caused a disproportionate amount of upset amongst some Confused

Can I just add, I love short hair and I think it shows that the person with short hair doesn't give a fuck and actually does as they please and that in itself is a very attractive trait!

GriefLeavesItsMark · 24/09/2017 11:46

I really have no opinion on hair length; although I do think a shaved head combined with a babydoll dress looks like 'escaped from a secure facility' rather than 'edgy'

SukiTheDog · 24/09/2017 11:46

I had short on and off for 20 yrs plus. I loved it. But when my jawline started to sag, I wanted something to hide behind. Now like it long (and it’s cheaper in terms of upkeep!)

rightknockered · 24/09/2017 11:46

I've had hair of all lengths, including shaving it off in my late teens to make a political statement (but really, looking back, I just wanted to look like I gave a shit and to copy Sinead O'Connor).
I now wear it long because it's easier for me. It's wavy, and wearing it shorter means I have to either straighten the waves out, get the waves to behave in a uniform manner, stop it sticking out in a triangle shape. Now I can just wet it in the morning, and the only thing I have to worry about it frizz.
And I'll admit, I think I look good with it long.

SukiTheDog · 24/09/2017 11:47

Oh, and I’m not a confident person particularly. I do eye makeup and blusher on a daily basis but short short nails and my own eyelashes 😊

rightknockered · 24/09/2017 11:49

And I don't have false nails, or false eyelashes, or anything else fake.
But only because I can't be bothered with the maintenance.

rightknockered · 24/09/2017 11:50

And I get dressed, put makeup on, and I want to look hot.
So what?
