What does v short hair say about a woman?

Just that really. I was having my (very short) hair cut yesterday and my hairdresser and I were talking and she said that she thought that women with short hair had to be very confident because they had nothing to 'hide behind' and that short hair suggested self assurance to her. I've never thought of myself as self assured so found this really interesting...so, whether you have short hair or not, what does very short hair say to you about a woman?

It says 'she has short hair.'

QueenBeex · 24/09/2017 10:36

Okay I think we should all blur out of face, and upload a picture of our short hair to show Kikibanana86 that we haven't all given up ;) 😂

QueenBeex · 24/09/2017 10:37

Our face * ^

I like to quote this article from the New York Times in 1993 when people ask what it means when a woman wears a particular thing.

Women's clothing is always assessed as if it is making a statement, in a way that men's is not.

greentea4me · 24/09/2017 10:39

Well most women I know get their hair cut either when they have children or when they are over 45, obviously hairdressers want to cut everyone's hair short because that's how they make their living, cutting hair! Short hair needs a lot more maintenance by a hairdresser than long hair so she is probably seeing pound signs.

AlternativeTentacle · 24/09/2017 10:40

Well it's like anything it depends on the person, when I think of short hair I think of someone older who's given up

Given up what?

Who the fuck are you to be deciding on whether a woman has given up anything, just because they have short hair?

Do you not think that actually, making an effort is the problem here? Why should women make any effort at all? What are they making the effort for? Who are they making an effort for?

It says alot that you work in the beauty industry yet - vacuous and shallow. One day you might look beyond the make up and discover what real beauty is. And it is not out of a bottle.

FlaviaAlbia · 24/09/2017 10:40

Why bother QueenBeex? It's not worth it for some randomer online who doesn't give a toss about you.

Trills · 24/09/2017 10:40

There is definitely a "thing" that has told people "once you are over 40 you can't have long hair" (possibly including the word "mutton") that leads to a lot of women getting unflattering haircuts because they think they need to act their age, or some rubbish like that.

I doubt many of those women hang out on Style and Beauty though.

HolgerDanske · 24/09/2017 10:41

It depends on the woman. And on where she is at that time in her life.

I've had very short hair a few times in my life, for different reasons each time.

The type of person I am? Some would say very confident, very self-assured. And there is some truth to the thing that having short hair means you can't hide. But at the same time, an outward appearance of fearlessness is often a mask.

I think it's completely the opposite nowadays. Every 40-something woman seems to have the Babyliss-Big-Hair-caramel-highlights-of-suburban-dullness.

Sandycarrots · 24/09/2017 10:44

Totally agree with what Alternative tentacle said.

And I wouldn't attribute any particular aspect of anyone's external appearance to any particular character trait.

Viviennemary · 24/09/2017 10:44

She might have nits. But it could say lots of things. Short hair is usually easier to manage but I'm not keen on very short hair tbh.

Trills · 24/09/2017 10:46

I think the "over 40" has shifted to "over 60" for the anti-mutton cut perhaps :o

Trills · 24/09/2017 10:46

My opinion is that your age is a poor indicator of what haircut will suit you.

0utForAWalkBitch · 24/09/2017 10:47

Sounds like she was just making small talk and churning out the old cliches. Possibly if challenged she'd acknowledge it's a daft thing to say.

PickAChew · 24/09/2017 10:48

It says that she likes having short hair.

Yesyesyesyeswhatever · 24/09/2017 10:50

I've had short hair most of my life. Have shaven it off myself at home too, multiple times. Now, that's cheap and easy. I do not care what anyone thinks. I do have good bone structure, though. It's true that most (maybe 80-90%) younger women in this country have long hair, which I think is strange. Many other countries I have lived in does not have such an uniform "stamp" of young woman look.

LoniceraJaponica · 24/09/2017 10:50

Wow. There are some ridiculous responses on here.
In my experience short hair needs more attention to look styled than long hair.

If I don't blow dry my short hair it sticks out all over the place. When it was long I could wash it and leave it. Maybe having wavy hair makes a difference.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 24/09/2017 10:50

Possibly true Trills. But I know a couple of 60-ish women who've recently taken the plunge and had their hair cut v.short and left it grey and in both cases they look amazingly cool and chic and about two decades younger.

user21 · 24/09/2017 10:52

I was at a party last night with mostly over 40's.
All different hairstyles and colours and non of them looked the same but virtually all of them wore black.

Kikibanana86 · 24/09/2017 10:52

I see your point but for me personally it's not only about women I think men should make an effort too but I know what you mean about unrealistic standards, I'm not shallow and vacuous at all but yes the industry can be.

Trills · 24/09/2017 10:53

That's great for them.
Doesn't mean it's not "a thing" though.
I expect the women you know are above average in the style stakes. :)

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 24/09/2017 10:53

I agree about what suits you being nothing to do with age.

Crispsheets · 24/09/2017 10:53

Kiki sounds intelligent Confused

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 24/09/2017 10:54

Well yeah, in all cases it depends on the quality of the cut/colour and whether it suits you.
