This is the third summer my maxi dress has not seen the light of day. Is it time to give them up?

Wear them all the time on holidays - they are incredibly comfortable and elegant. They suit my style. I also still wear those very wide legged Linen trousers which were a thing back then, too Confused!!

I am tall and a size 14 - I find other dresses either too short or too strappy.

They are making a comeback by the looks on the fash mags I have with me here Smile.

scrabbler3 · 28/08/2017 17:51

I'm tall and a size 14. They make me look longer and leaner. It helps that they hide my very heavy legs, and show off my toned arms and shoulders. I have a green one that I particularly like - I reckon I'm Penelope Keith in the Good Life lol.

applesareredandgreen · 28/08/2017 19:31

I've never really 'got' maxi dresses - I'm 5'4", size 14 pear shape with a mum-tum/middle age spread - when I've tried them on they've been too long, too voluminous,, make me look short and fat. Until this year. I've discovered a basic T shirt maxi dress, quite thick fabric, straight but very slightly A line and it falls slightly above my ankles. I can walk in it without feeling I'm going to trip over the hem, it skims my lumps and bumps - can dress up or down.

I like it so much I've bought one in black which I was hoping to wear into Autumn/ winter - not sure how to style it though - what would I wear on my feet?

PollyPerky · 28/08/2017 19:48

I think it was 1978.

Ifonlyiweretaller · 28/08/2017 19:57

Apples - i need to know where you got this dress from please?

Almostthere15 · 28/08/2017 20:06

Yes apples please spill, where from?

I'd style with ankle boots of your choice (I go biker) and a denim jacket and scarf. Or a biker lather jacket?

I think maxis are not all created equal. I order my cotton ones from gap. They have a drawer string waist and slits to the knee. They've taken me to theme parks, bbqs, afternoon tea, sight seeing and lunches. Then I have a straight black maxi that looks amazing with a glittery sandal in the summer. I can't even remember where it's from but it's at least 7 years old and comes out every summer for holidays and nights out.

WildwestWind · 28/08/2017 20:36

I wore one for the first time this year on holiday. Straightish, navy with a floral print. Felt good wearing it and thought it was flattering.

Melabela10 · 28/08/2017 20:49

I'm tall so used to wear maxi dresses about a decade ago but found them quite uncomfortable

Ifonlyiweretaller · 28/08/2017 20:57

standing here in one of mine this evening. And Ii truly feel good in it! A previous poster said she struggled with the lengths as she is petite - so am I (height wise anyway Grin ) but I buy from petite ranges or get ones that I think will will work with the bottom taken off shortened.

PrimalLass · 31/08/2017 23:50

I normally wear a racer back maxi when it is hot, and to go for dinner on holiday. Not lots of fabric and a racer back is v flattering. But I didn't this year, for some reason. I just wore shorts and a nice vest + big jewellery on holiday.

I am 5 ft 10 and I wear maxis all the time in summer as most 'knee length' dresses are 'minis 'on me and at 50 just not appropriate . I also have problems with ankle swelling after a fracture and I am very self conscious about it.I am just back from holidays in Italy and there were plenty of women both young and older in long length dresses and skirts.

Roussette · 01/09/2017 08:40

Don't mind a calf length T shirt dress but the proper print maxi dress thing.. no no no no never worn one. I look like a man in a dress and when I tried one on once, my best friend nearly choked laughing.

However, we may be talking different things as far as maxi dresses. Floral dress in pic or ones similar just ghastly. T shirt dress above the ankles - passable.

I always mean to wear mine, and itvoften makes the final three; then I remember that I have great legs and it's a shame to hide them.

Roussette · 01/09/2017 08:54

Yes, I'm with you there Thegiant, my legs are my best feature the rest is shit so when I cover them up in a voluminous dress I feel really unattractive. Different with skinny jeans, they still show off legs.

DollyPartonsBeard · 01/09/2017 09:11

I like the idea of them but the reality never seems to quite match. I've got a lovely Ossie Clark one and it's bias cut and clingy in the right places, but it rarely gets worn. It's been to tenerife twice and stayed in the wardrobe both times.

Also I remember reading a quote about how a maxi dress can make you look like a dalek in a valance, which stayed with me.

Joinourclub · 01/09/2017 09:21

I had some pre kids when I was skinny. I then wore them during my pregnancy as I was too cheap to buy maternity clothes. Ever since when I put them in I just think I still look pregnant.

Elledorado · 01/09/2017 10:12

"A dalek in a valance" .... gold

Dowser · 01/09/2017 10:56

I've been getting rid of mine over the years.
I much prefer knee length.
More flattering, more modern and just too hot for our holidays abroad.

applesareredandgreen · 01/09/2017 11:16

For the posters who asked - my T shirt dress is available at Simply B and Marisota .... not exactly trend setting I know!

rockinnrollin · 01/09/2017 11:22

I've never worn one but I've wanted to. I'm 5'2 but Petite ranges fit me awkwardly because I have a longer torso. So I've yet to find one that doesn't drag on the floor or go in at the wrong place at the waist. I'm an apple shape so those maxi dresses that are just one shape make me look like a sack of potatoes.

applesareredandgreen · 01/09/2017 12:23

And I need to add a big PS about my dress - have just got the black dress out of the delivery bag to look at - as I'd assumed it would be the same as the stripey one and it's not Sad it's about 6 inches longer and 2 sizes larger Sad

As it was in the sale and only cost £8.something I'll probably keep the smaller size and get it turned up as I'm going to Spain at Easter when the weather is a bit changeable it will be useful then.
