This is the third summer my maxi dress has not seen the light of day. Is it time to give them up?

I've worn a plain one tied up like the pic this year . I think it makes them more current . Floaty floral maxi dresses not for at least 3 years . I fact I gave them to charity last year !

I think they look nice ... on other people. I'm a size smaller in trousers so they cover up my slimmest part as I have slim hips and legs but big boobs.

That said I did wear a Hush grecian dress without the belt on holiday and that looked really nice but I'd sized down and it wasn't too billowy.

Prefer slim jersey maxi skirts with a loose boxy top. I have a great ruched stripy one from the Boden sale for £10 - it's like the Hush one only maxi length.

BorisTrumpsHair · 26/08/2017 18:45

I've hemmed all mine to just below the knee. They are now perfect. Much better.

Orangebird69 · 26/08/2017 18:47

A couple of days ago. I'm tall (over 6ft), size 14 with big boobs. They look good on me. Plus, whilst the length of my legs is grea9t, they're bloody ugly so short skirts/shorts etc are a no no for me.

WhooooAmI24601 · 26/08/2017 18:48

Never. I'm tall and size 12 with swimmers shoulders so can't ever find any to fit. I buy them and they just languish in the wardrobe.

sunnyeyes · 26/08/2017 18:49

Right now! It's my favourite one and I've had it for years 😊😊

RhinestoneCowgirl · 26/08/2017 18:50

I've never worn one. I'm clumsy and it would be an accident waiting to happen. Plus not practical on a bike.

PuppyMonkey · 26/08/2017 18:55

I think they look awful. On me, yes, but also on everyone else I've seen - including the shop dummies. Grin

PookieSnackenberger · 26/08/2017 18:57

Boris - I was thinking of shortening the two I do have. I think that a midi length is much more flattering.

Winglesspegasus - I really like the first two you posted. Where are they from?

thecatfromjapan · 26/08/2017 19:05

I have two that I've been wearing on rotation. This is one. I wear it with a denim jacket.

The other is a really lovely one from Anthropologie: silk chiffon and paisley pattern.

I really do find the hems a bit tricky, though. And I suspect I'm too short and plump for the style! Smile

I had a bad day in my maxi the other week, though. I visited Brighton, it rained, and I discovered that the water pours down the streets! Shock The hem of the dress soaked water up the material for about half a foot. It was really yicky.

Paintbox · 26/08/2017 19:09

Nomdeplume, you're right, bum 40 is very tall and thin and witblog who wears maxi dresses is short. Very dainty but not tall by any stretch.

I think they can look good in some people and it's not as clear cut as them simply not being fashionable, some of them are very fashionable at the mo, thinking of the wide sleeved embroidered peasant type

JaceLancs · 26/08/2017 20:27

Just remembered I kept my 2 favourites with the intention of shortening them and had completely forgotten - might do that this week
I do have an ankle length jaeger dress thing but it's more of a throw over a swimming costume - white linen and split at sides past the knee - I wear it on holiday for boat trips

Trills · 26/08/2017 20:29

I don't think they only look good if you're very very slim.

I think some people have been conditioned to think that anything even slightly out of the norm "only looks good if you're very slim" because people who are not very slim should try to fade into the background.

paradoxicalInterruption · 26/08/2017 20:36

Today, size 14 and big bust. My legs are v white. It's not a flouncy one.

Guardian today was suggesting them...

ZippyCameBack · 26/08/2017 20:38

I am not very slim (at all!) and I live in maxi dresses all year round. I don't especially care if I fail to meet the required standard of attractiveness. I've just made a winter maxi in microfleece and it's fab. I will be warm and cosy without having to wear too many layers and still manage to get dressed in less than a minute.

Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 26/08/2017 20:41

Today, they are lovely for keeping cool.

Bluntness100 · 26/08/2017 20:42

To be honest I was surprised they ever became popular. It was like the idea was better than the reality. When they were at their peak of fashion I do recall seeing one woman on holiday who really suited it, she was very tall though and I guess about a size 14. She had her hair loosely piled up and just knocked it out thr park. Past that ive never seen anyone in one and thought gosh she looks lovely.

I'm five eight and although a ten to twelve, I just am not able to pull them off. I bought a palm print one for holiday this year, long, slim fitting, spaghetti straps, had visions of me floating to dinner in it with strappy flat Grecian sandals, hair piled up like some bronzed goddess. In reality I just looked like a self conscious over dressed twat and it was never worn out.Grin

About 5 years ago. They actually only look good on tall skinny people

iklboo · 26/08/2017 21:11

Probably the 1970s at primary school disco. I'm a short arse so I look like I'm playing dress up in a maxi dress.

NachoAddict · 26/08/2017 21:11

Fairly often, not very flattering but I embrace my Apple shape and let people assume I am 6 months pregnant.

InigoTaran · 26/08/2017 21:17

This is me in one of mine. I love it! I'm a size 14-16, and its easy to wear when it's hot.

2014newme · 26/08/2017 21:22

They do make everyone look pregnant, too much voluminous fabric.

Scabetty · 26/08/2017 21:24

Ladt week in France,

LittleMissCantbebothered · 26/08/2017 21:28

I'm wearing one today! But I'm the first to admit I'm not very fashionable......
