This is the third summer my maxi dress has not seen the light of day. Is it time to give them up?

Yesterday! I bought one two years ago & bought another two this year. I just find them so easy to wear. An entire outfit, comfy & none of the usual summer hassle of making sure you're legs are hair free etc. I'm only 5'4", pear shaped and chubby (just into overweight BMI). I always get compliments when using them but it could be because I have nice friends and/or because I am useless at working out what clothes go together and a dress solves all of that

StressheadMcGee · 26/08/2017 21:30

Erm, right now! The navy version of this m.dorothyperkins.com/en/dpuk/product/dresses-5699972/petite-dresses-204109/petite-coral-jersey-maxi-dress-6465585

I'm 5 foot nothing, not particularly slim with a c-sec tum (even though he's now 4!) but it's warm, I'm comfy and got a complement from a v stylish friend today.

I felt nice anyway!

ReinettePompadour · 26/08/2017 21:37

Around 1982 when I was young and slim and they were all the rage. Blush

I never used to believe that clothes I used to wear as a teenager would be back in fashion during my lifetime, honestly does anyone wear a nice corset and bustle dress like my Grandmother used to, I'm pretty sure the answers no so I'm gobsmacked clothes I wore are now available on the high street. Its all very odd Confused

LockedOutOfMN · 26/08/2017 21:39

I've worn a wedding dress once for real and once in the school fashion show. In the same fashion show, I wore another maxi dress.

And that's my maxi dress wearing experiences in 36 years.

emilybrontescorset · 26/08/2017 21:44

I wore one today.

thecatfromjapan · 26/08/2017 21:50

Reinette They come in and out with some regularity. I was around in the period in which 'Abigail's Party' is set. When I put on one of my maxi dresses the other day, I had a very sudden flashback to a memory of my mother dressed in a floral maxi, with a big, floppy hat.

I, too, remember wearing a maxi dress to some party or other as a child.

Seeyamonday · 26/08/2017 21:52

Now!!

Donttouchthethings · 26/08/2017 21:58

Today! A black one with a blue denim jacket.

thecatfromjapan · 26/08/2017 21:58

Trills I've just read your comment. It was very sensible.

Paintbox · 26/08/2017 22:00

Well said trills.
A pp said upthread that they make everyone look pregnant as too much voluminous fabric. I just don't get that, a maxi dress is the same as a mini or midi dress but longer, they can be slim fitting not always voluminous. I don't understand why it would make everyone look pregnant when there must be loads and loads of different styles of long dress out there

Trills · 26/08/2017 22:00

Thanks thecat

Trills · 26/08/2017 22:04

And paintbox

If a (particular style of) maxi dress makes "everyone" look pregnant, that sounds like a good thing to me, because if everyone looks pregnant than no-one looks pregnant. Onlookers will think "that shape of dress looks like that" rather than "that person has had a large lunch".

BuzzKillington · 26/08/2017 22:07

I wore one on holiday - I have had it for ages - it's a slim fitting t-shirt material, but it did feel dated. It was bloody comfortable though. I don't think I'd wear one here now.

I don't get the 'only look good on slim people' thing. Yes, everything looks good on the slim. Fat people don't expect to look slim in a maxi dress. They still look fat yet can look nice. My friend weighs about 15 stone and wears maxi dresses and looks great.

thecatfromjapan · 26/08/2017 22:36

Trills I kept reading all the 'only if you're slim' comments and had a momentary wobble. I asked my daughter if she thought I should swear off my maxi dresses. She answered just the way you did. I was so proud of her. And then I spotted your post and I just had to say how sensible it was. Smile

I'm a bit surprised at myself, actually. Usually, the voice in my head says that sort of thing.

And it's true.

Tigger85 · 26/08/2017 22:45

Iv been living in them since June, almost 40 weeks pregnant now and they are pretty much the only clothing I have that actually fits, the only other clothes that I can use at the moment are my other half's shorts made from trackie bottom type material and his t shirts. The maternity t shirts I bought are not long enough to fully cover my bump now and it's too hot for maternity jeans.

Bluntness100 · 26/08/2017 22:53

I think if they were about when I was pregnant I'd have worn them then, they probably do make decent maternity wear in the summer.

BestIsWest · 26/08/2017 22:56

About a year ago. I am tall and a pear and I had a couple of really beautiful flattering ones. But I never really found the right occasion for them and hardly wore them. Felt daft wearing them to Tesco and couldn't wear them for work.
Maybe I need to get them shortened.

60sname · 26/08/2017 23:11

They look shit on me as I am flat chested and slightly pear shaped so they obscure the good bits for me and accentuate the bad.

Plus round here wearing them is for people with a distinct lack of imagination

ChainingDaisy · 26/08/2017 23:20

Two years ago. I do have a lovely maxi skirt though, it's dark red with little creamy flowers on it. It's a 70s original I got in a junk shop. I wear it with a plain, tight, dark blue t shirt. It has a similar amount of fabric as a double sheet and swirls when I walk. It is a thing of great beauty and much complimented. Nothing other than that though.

oldlaundbooth · 26/08/2017 23:49

Never worn one.

I'm 5'5, hourglass shaped. Size 10/12, generous arms.

SIL who is 5'8 and a size 6 wears them loads and looks great.

They do me no favours.

oldlaundbooth · 26/08/2017 23:50

Same as 60s actually - hide the good and show the bad.

Elledorado · 27/08/2017 01:36

There are so many types of maxi dress and certain styles are still very much in fashion here. Ppl around here wear them tied up like that picture a previous person posted. I actually get hot in them - too much fabric for me. I also actively dislike that chiffony bridesmaid type.

squiz81 · 27/08/2017 08:15

I've worn all of these this year. I'm not tall, 5'4" and I'm a size 8. They may make me look flat chested...but I am flat chested so most clothes do that Grin

When was the last time you wore a maxi dress?
Paintbox · 27/08/2017 08:18

Trills and cat from Japan, if we believed everything we read on here, those of us larger than a size 10 would wear nothing other than some straight legged jeans etc. It sometimes seems that there are no fashions allowed for us and that we just have to wear classic clothes. I wear what I like as a size 12-14 and I don't care. Agree with pp that a dress (or anything) won't make me look a size 8 but I am allowed to and can look nice in clothes at a size 14

MaisyPops · 27/08/2017 08:25

About a week ago. Usually I love in them all spring/summer/early autumn but this year has been a bit rubbish for the weather.

You don't have to be tall to wear them though. I'm not.

Maxi skirts are a bit more versatile though. I wear them more.
