When was the last time you wore a maxi dress?

This is the third summer my maxi dress has not seen the light of day. Is it time to give them up?

Thanks for that Greenlavender, I feel much better now I know I look so unattractive Hmm

CiderwithBuda · 27/08/2017 13:25

I haven't worn mine for a couple of years. Mainly because they don't fit anymore. I've gained a stone since I wore them.

I did like mine when I wore them. 5ft 7 and a size 20. Yes probably looked like a ship in sail but I'm 53 and dress for me not anyone else.

One of my favourites is a Per Una one I spotted on a slagging off M&S thread! It's dark blues and greens which I love. Also got a lovely black one at the same time which is in a really great fabric. Heavy crepe and drapes really well.

Another couple I probably won't wear again. I must have a look and see. If I would wear them shortened (and a stone lighter!). like maxi skirts too. Especially straight ones with slits in the sides.

ragz134 · 27/08/2017 13:32

Like June, I'm tall and a size 14 and they look great on me, so I wear mine when I can. Wore my gorgeous Seasalt one (blue and white stripe) last weekend.

loveka · 27/08/2017 14:31

And Ive just bought another one from M and S. Red, off the shoulder. Love it.

robinia · 27/08/2017 16:45

@PuppyMonkey

They may hide every bulge but they do so by making you look like an enormous elasticated tent

Nope. If I wasn't bothered about outing myself I'd post some of mine in here. They are easily the most flattering garments in my wardrobe. I'm 5'6", have varied in size from 10 to 14 with a bulgy stomach and maxis, usually straightish, worn with heels, boots, trainers or flip flop type sandals work just about every time.

Trills · 27/08/2017 16:58

Wearing one today as a 🖕 to all the negativity.

Tantpoke · 27/08/2017 17:15

I wore mine just last week on holiday, lovely and floaty and cool as its silk. I'm not particularly slender and have a bit of a tummy and big boobs but it was nevertheless flattering.

BlackThumb · 27/08/2017 17:19

I love them! Can rarely find one long enough though...

OlennasWimple · 27/08/2017 17:31

Last night! It's really hot here, and I have a fab one which is a slimmer cut than the more voluminous ones I've seen before. Plus it is the perfect colour and length for me, so even though I'm not very tall or slim it is very flattering

Helloyouitsme · 27/08/2017 19:18

I'm keeping mine in case I ever go on a cruise .

indulgentberries · 27/08/2017 19:28

Helloyouitsme - for the day or evening? A maxi dress wouldn't cut the mustard on most formal nights at a cruise, women really go to town and wear ball gowns on the ones I've been on (P&O, RCI and Norwegian).

blueshoes · 27/08/2017 19:31

I am 5 ft, size 6 and own many maxi dresses. They are not strictly speaking maxi as I take them up to just above ankle height. They feel so cool in the hot weather whilst covering my legs. There is nothing restrictive around the waist (unlike shorts) and so comfortable. Look great with a hat and sandals, takes you to the beach, camping or just pottering around town.

bananafish81 · 27/08/2017 19:36

I had a couple and binned them after realising they were deeply unflattering

I'm 5'8" and a small size 8 - the ones that were slightly empire line-esque under the bust just made me look pregnant

And the one that was figure hugging looked great until I ate or drank anything, as it was completely unforgiving on anything other than a totally flat tummy

I tried one on in uniqlo a few weeks ago, and looked like a tall floral lampshade

They might look great on some people, however I have had to conclude that I am not those people!

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 28/08/2017 12:16

Silk keeps you warm not cool! It's to with the shape of the fibre

emilybrontescorset · 28/08/2017 15:34

I think they look nice.
What are larger women supposed to wear if they look awful in virtually everything?
Of course a beautiful slim woman will look better than a plain fat woman.
That's the same as saying that a toned, slim man with beautiful eyes and a full head of hair looks better than a fat bald ugly man. That's obvious.

bananafish81 · 28/08/2017 15:46

@emilybrontescorset wear whatever is flattering to your figure

I'm a tall slim woman and I look shit in maxi dresses - or at least, I've never tried on enough to find one that's more flattering to me than other styles of dresses / skirts.

I'm sure there are shorter curvier women who will find maxi dresses that are much more flattering to their figure than other styles of dress.

I don't know about beautiful, but I'm a slim woman - it's not a logical conclusion that if I look shit in something that must also be the case for someone larger

There's plenty of dresses that look amazing on a curvier woman, that look utterly ridiculous on a bean pole like me

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 28/08/2017 15:55

I wear them on holiday or in hot weather quite a bit. Although far from model-shaped, I am tall with narrow shoulders, small boobs, and a defined waist, which I think is the kind of shape that works ok in a maxi. On the other hand I have thunder thighs and cankles so can't do shorts at all.

ziggzagg · 28/08/2017 16:02

Wearing one now!! It's the only thing I and my pregnant belly feel comfortable in!!

Bluntness100 · 28/08/2017 16:11

I just remembered I was really tempted by this one from seafolly a couple of months ago when holiday shopping. But for the price realised I'd never wear it at home. However it's about the only one I think is lovely

Side on though even the model is struggling to look good in it and being knitted it's prob going to cling in all the wrong places sigh

I've got plain black simple t-shirt style ones that are brilliant on holiday and when really bloody hot - very thin but hang great cotton. Love them for their practical skin protection and keeping me cool in scorching Canaries heat and the 3 day UK summer.

Mumsnut · 28/08/2017 16:20

I have some beach ones reserved for holidays.

fishinginthecut · 28/08/2017 16:32

My friend was wearing one yesterday she looked lovely, she's pear shaped and it looked fab, on me though it would have looked awful!

woollychimp · 28/08/2017 16:42

I'm 5' 1'' and have never worn one - they would just drag on the floor and for some reason they don't do petite versions, which you would think would be an obvious thing to do.

MinesaPinot · 28/08/2017 17:18

Saturday night at a BBQ at our next door neighbours. Khaki, A-line worn clinched in with a tan leather belt.

I love them, have several and always pack them for beach holidays as they are so easy to throw on in the evening with a pair of beaded flipflops and nice jewellery. I have a tendency to buy neutral colours rather than patterns, and wear them here with flats, quite contemporary jewellery and a denim jacket over the top. Did exactly that a while back when we were going to the theatre in London recently one Saturday, but wanted to go up and see an exhibition in the afternoon beforehand. Threw on black maxi with flipflops and a jacket and just took a change of earrings and a pair of glitzy flats in my bag. Quick dive into one of the hotels for a drink and use of their loos, a freshen and change of sandals and earrings and I was good to go for the evening.

Can't beat them in my opinion.

LadyFlumpalot · 28/08/2017 17:27

Yesterday, then the day before, then the day before that! Love a good cool cotton maxi dress.
