This is the third summer my maxi dress has not seen the light of day. Is it time to give them up?

I have a long shirt dress which comes down to the floor and is quite tight. It's a black and white floral pattern in cotton have worn it quite a bit over the last couple of years.

loveka · 26/08/2017 16:34

Yesterday! I wear them a lot. I love them.

mysteryfairy · 26/08/2017 16:35

I wear maxi dresses and skirts still, but narrow plain jersey ones rather than voluminous patterned types. Im very pale and burn easily so I just prefer to stay covered. I'm 5ft 10 and size 10 so I hope I don't get the matronly effect, but I am questioning now whether I look dated.

BikeRunSki · 26/08/2017 16:37

Never. My lower legs are my most shapely bit.

Gah81 · 26/08/2017 16:38

A few weekends ago. A vintage 40s maxi with incredibly flattering ruching. Am 5ft7, a slim hourglass with mediocre legs - find it super easy to just slip on and no need to shave/shimmer my legs up :)

KingJoffreysRestingCuntface · 26/08/2017 16:39

I'm wearing one today. Long sleeved, with a vest top under it.

Makes me look about 20 stone but who cares?

It's cool and floaty and a really nice print.

BackforGood · 26/08/2017 16:40

In the early 90s when I got married

Jakadaal · 26/08/2017 16:40

I did on holiday this year but I was in the minority Grin and have traded my flowy maxi skirts for straighter styles with slits up the side and have worn them a lot this summer

InigoTaran · 26/08/2017 16:51

Today! I have 7 and really like them, think they look elegant on me, will be sad when summer is gone and I can't wear them any more!

thecatfromjapan · 26/08/2017 17:26

Today.

I think I look like a 70s Art teacher but they are very easy to wear (though I find climbing to the top deck of buses whilst negotiating shopping + hem a bit tricky).

Why don't you wear yours?

JaceLancs · 26/08/2017 17:27

3 years ago on holiday abroad
I just don't think they're very fashionable any more
This year on holiday for evenings out I am taking a variety of linen dresses - all knee length or slightly above which I'll be wearing with flat sandals

SesameSparkle · 26/08/2017 18:09

I just bought a shirt style floral maxi dress. I'm on the short side, but it's a good length on me with a flattering narrow shape. I'm hoping to wear belted with rolled up sleeves and a few buttons undone. I think I could wear it with sandals or boots, with a leather jacket over the top - I like the way the 2nd dress that wingless linked to is styled.

Sparkletastic · 26/08/2017 18:11

Last month to a wedding. It was like a 1940s tea dress maxi with a deep v neck and split. I'm 5ft9 and a proportionate size 16. I looked bloody good in it though I say so myself Wink

NomDePlumeReloaded · 26/08/2017 18:14

Tonight, but it is a scoop necked clingy one (sort of a long bodycon with slit up the side), not a flowy, lairy printed number.

TheHandmaidsTail · 26/08/2017 18:16

I'm tall with big norks and a wobbly belly and wear the chiffon ones to go out. Couldn't wear a jersey one though, would put everyone off their ice cream.

thenightsky · 26/08/2017 18:17

On holiday last month. I have this bravissimo one Its comfy and I feel slim and elegant in it.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 26/08/2017 18:19

To my mind, there are maxis and maxis.

The ones l won't wear are the long knitted things.

The new maxi seems to be about 3 inches above the ankle, and made of woven material. I like these very much.

Stellato · 26/08/2017 18:23

I wore one today, I love them. But they suit me, and I find hair removal tedious.

captainfunderpants · 26/08/2017 18:26

I bought a striped one in J Crew and just can't bring myself to wear it. Too long, too flowy. I wish I was tall and willowy! Might eBay it.

DramaAlpaca · 26/08/2017 18:28

I wear them a lot. I'm very tall & they suit me.

BadTasteFlump · 26/08/2017 18:29

Never.

I'm tall and slimish (12) but they make me look like a pregnant slug.

Paintbox · 26/08/2017 18:30

I always see on here that maxi dresses are hideously unfashionable but I keep seeing witblig and her friend and colleague petrostofberg in them and I consider those 2 to be really fashionable and stylish. Also bum 40 wears them a lot. Agree with op about the new style being 3 inches above the ankle though and them often being sleeved in a cotton or woven fabric, not jersey material and not def not strapless

NC4now · 26/08/2017 18:32

I've worn them for beer gardening in this summer. Also a size 14 and tall.

NomDePlumeReloaded · 26/08/2017 18:37

Bum40 is tall (5'10" I think?) and willowy. She says she is a 12 but always looks teeny. I am 5'7" and an 8-10 (10 if I want a generous cut) and she always looks tinier than me. Is it posing? Fibbing? Filters? Or is she so tall that a 12 looks like a small 8? I'm always baffled by that. Some of the high street things she buys are scraping the floor too, on an average height woman they'd be dragging on the floor. I do wonder who some of those stores cut for. Size 6, 6 footers. Bit niche.

ElspethFlashman · 26/08/2017 18:41

That Bravissimo one actually looks like it might be fairly flattering. Shock
