When was the last time you wore a maxi dress?

This is the third summer my maxi dress has not seen the light of day. Is it time to give them up?

Yesterday. I look really good in them. I'm not that tall (only 5' 7") but very slim.
I loathe the flouncy ones with frills round the bottom and the ones with huge patterns, but there are lots that are very flattering.

bigmouthstrikesagain · 27/08/2017 08:48

Cheers Trills and other supportive posters.

Yes I am size 18 and I am 5'8" and I wear maxi dresses - it really shouldn't feel like I am declaring my shameful addiction! Grin

Donostia · 27/08/2017 08:49

last night. mine is very flattering. I'm on holiday.

MrsFezziwig · 27/08/2017 08:49

In 1968. It looked rubbish then so I haven't repeated the experiment.

I am the ideal height/shape for a maxi, and I have several, but I never wore them for everyday- only for evenings out and on holiday where it was hot.

My problem has been that they make me feel like Margo Leadbetter; I want to shout, "Jerreeeee" in Penelope Keith voice.

The dresses I have are mostly the plain White Company ones. I'm contemplating getting them shortened; has anyone on here done that?

BorisTrumpsHair · 27/08/2017 09:03

I've shortened mine - just cut and hemmed them. I get much more wear out of them now.

In other news I also cut a couple of old linen dresses and made them into skirts with pockets. Getting a lot of wear out of them too.

Springersrock · 27/08/2017 09:07

I have a dark grey jersey, fairly fitted one which I wear now and then.

I look silly in big billowy ones. I'm 5ft 8, size 10 but look like a ship in full sail in them

Gah81 · 27/08/2017 09:24

I agree with PP about figure hugging ones being quite flattering. The one I have in mind is basically a close-cut tea dress (shelf bust, short and slightly gathered sleeves), made from a slinky rayon. Nips in at the waist (essential for me). Easy to dress up with heels with the evening or dress down with sandals for daytime.

It is actually one of the most versatile pieces of clothing I have.

ImListening · 27/08/2017 09:34

No they look ridiculous on me (I'm short & dumpy) & other people- tall or short. I have never ever seen anyone that looks decent in one. I just spend my time thinking - have you looked in a mirror?

tireddotcom72 · 27/08/2017 09:44

I took 3 on holiday and wore them as I love them - don't really wear them here but when it's nearly 40 degrees I don't want my usual wardrobe of skinny jeans with various tops.

I'm 45 though and past caring if it's fashionable, if it suits me I will wear it.

VioletCharlotte · 27/08/2017 09:51

I've worn mine this summer, back in June wen we had the heatwave. I really like maxi dresses. They're cool and comfortable and cover my legs!

VioletCharlotte · 27/08/2017 09:51

robinia · 27/08/2017 09:52

Yesterday!
They're very flattering even for larger figures. Hide every bulge Grin

BetterEatCheese · 27/08/2017 09:54

I wore one when pregnant in 2010 but worry now that not being particularly slim it makes me look pregnant

I love them though

PuppyMonkey · 27/08/2017 09:56

They may hide every bulge but they do so by making you look like an enormous elasticated tent Grin

sheepflower · 27/08/2017 09:58

Never, I'm short and look like a chess pawn in them. Also generally I don't think they really look great on anyone.

ThePurpleOneWithTheNut · 27/08/2017 10:10

I'm 5'8 and like longer dresses but just not to the floor. Floor length feels like an evening dress to me and I look like a ship in sail.

I get them shortened and have found I wear them much more then.

bigmouthstrikesagain · 27/08/2017 10:33

I think a well cut dress is a well cut dress. There are far too many off the rack frumpy crap dresses in the world. I have a few myself. That is the problem.

A well cut flattering long dress is just as good as a shorter flattering dress. I do agree it is taller women that will tendto look better in longer dresses but there are longer dresses that will work on the short and round. Just need the right one.

Ifonlyiweretaller · 27/08/2017 11:00

I love them and think I suit them, despite being only 5' tall and a size 16. I probably own six or seven but do tend to wear the same two or three most of the time. I usually wear them with a denim jacket.

MaryLennoxsScowl · 27/08/2017 11:40

I've just gone and tried on all my maxi dresses (I have 5) and have concluded that at 5'2", the two with elastic at the waist suit me, one of the elongated racer vest style is okay and the other in same style but tighter doesn't. The last one is a tiered billowy monstrosity with ruched boob tube bit which makes me look completely flat chested. However, I didn't like wearing any of them on holiday as it was too hot to wear miles of material and I wanted a tan on my legs. Also they have started to look a bit dated.

MaryLennoxsScowl · 27/08/2017 11:41

I think I'm going to have a bit of a wardrobe cull today after dragging those out!

Fozzleyplum · 27/08/2017 11:46

Thepurpleone, how much shorter did you make yours? I"m 5'8" too (and about a 10-12), and I feel as though I'm off to a '70s dinner party in my floor length ones.

greenlavender · 27/08/2017 11:53

Never. I've never seen anyone look good in one either. I think they're very unattractive.

Polichinelle · 27/08/2017 13:08

Summer 2015 and every time I look at those pictures, I hate them. I looked like a tent (size 10 otherwise)
