How do some people manage to look so effortlessly cool?

Is there a secret to it or do you have to be born with some kind of special 'coolness' gene?

I'd love to be able to chuck on something vintage with a pair of Levi's and look cool, but instead I'd look like I had no decent clothes to wear and had just gone out in the first thing I grabbed off the ironing pile!

Is there anything I can do to make myself look a bit more edgy and cool?

I'm not that dim, just emotional and a gobshite. Must work on that.

Scarlett Johansson is cool.

emilybrontescorset · 17/06/2017 09:00

Cool people are just cool,
It's nothing to do with swishy hair and elegance imo.
I have cool friend she just is.
Her hair is always clean and she often just ties it up with a quick twist and a few grips and it looks fab.
She is thin and has enviable colouring, black hair green eyes good bone structure, petite.
She has favourite couloirs and wears them together, she doesn't spend a fortune on clothes.
She often wears flat shoes/boots/sandals which all look comfortable and add to her air of coolness.
I think cool people definitely don't drive audis bmws or Mercedes they are the ones who drive cheaper cars which they can zip onto a tight parking spot,
Their bags aren't designer, sometimes they don't carry a bag.
They have their own individual style.
Often they look amazing in men's clothes too.

emilybrontescorset · 17/06/2017 09:01

To add I remember the cool people at school they are still cool now!

MumBod · 17/06/2017 12:01

See, I just had a customer that was a different sort of cool altogether.

Tall, slim, long ginger hair, tanned, simple denim shirtdress and white birkies.

She looked absolutely brilliant - calm, serene and as cool as a cucumber, while not being edgy at all.

I went all flustered serving her and instantly felt like a ridiculous heffalump Blush

The epitome of cool is Sade.
She manages to combine elegance, sexiness and class. The slicked back hair and the red lip still look great

buggerthebotox · 17/06/2017 14:12

.....not to mention the music...

AuldAlliance · 17/06/2017 14:50

Joan Baez is cool.
Beautiful; growing old really gracefully; not trendy but always looks good. Fights for her convictions.

Not to mention her voice...

squoosh · 17/06/2017 15:46

Oh yes Sade is very cool indeed. Thinking about it one thing the cool people mentioned here have in common is they rarely smile!

AuldAlliance · 17/06/2017 18:01

I beg to differ

SpiritedLondon · 17/06/2017 19:13

I love these cool older women...it gives me hope. Maybe l'll discover my coolness at 50.

ToodlePipsqueak · 17/06/2017 19:28

I don't know if this will come across as if I'm bragging, sorry if it does, but I used to be cool. Then I had dd at 26 and I lost it. I was just thinking about it the other day, though I couldn't put my finger on what was wrong - but I am definitely suffering from a distinct lack of cool. It's been three years since she was born and I just feel shit all the time. I always look drab and boring. It doesn't seem to matter what I wear. I don't know what happened. I never used to make much effort - that hasn't really changed. I am underweight now whereas I used to be a healthy weight. Maybe that's what's gone wrong. That plus the lack of sleep and the stress of having a child who likely has ASD had really drained me.

Floisme · 17/06/2017 19:33

I beg to differ
No begging required. Simply not true,

How do some people manage to look so effortlessly cool?
Scrumpernickel · 17/06/2017 20:14

Ok most people mentioned on this thread are unsmilers.
That's why smiling rarely features in fashion photography. It's not deemed cool.

Scrumpernickel · 17/06/2017 20:18

Toodle parenthood can be overwhelming and it sounds like you have a lot going on in your life 💐

Maybe setting a bit of you time aside to get your fashion mojo back would help you re-connect with the old Toodle. Hope that doesn't sound too new age mumbo-jumboey.

Floisme · 17/06/2017 20:24

Patti Smith's not much of a smiler - I'll give you that, although when I went to see her, she was very funny.

ToodlePipsqueak · 17/06/2017 20:38

Scrumpernickel aw thanks. Maybe there is still hope for me. Ha I've never felt so vain as i do right now! Grin

SunsetBeetch · 17/06/2017 20:39

I love Parquet Courts, nina

Scrumpernickel · 17/06/2017 20:50

Toodle I am firmly of the opinion that a bit of vanity is a good thing! If I think I look good I feel I can take on the world. And if you have a natural flair for fashion you are already ahead of the pack 😄 I just snoop on Instagram and copy the naturally fashionable.

MartinRohdesBellybuttonFluff · 17/06/2017 21:36

I think cool people always have an expression that portrays they know more than the average person on the street. It's an all knowing expression, not sneery.

Maybe it's that they know they look cool?

(God, that was as clear as mud and I haven't even had my first gin yet GrinGin)

Chicinwellies · 17/06/2017 23:29

The bike riding chick in Lucky Man, very cool. And Black Swan girl, very.

nina2b · 18/06/2017 01:07

SunsetBeetch

I love Parquet Courts, nina

You are clearly someone with impeccable taste!Smile

buggerthebotox · 18/06/2017 09:18

And there's me thinking Parquet Courts are a cool pair of shoes. Grin.

woollychimp · 18/06/2017 10:07

There's a woman who I see doing the school run who is cool. She is slim and more handsome than beautiful - good bone structure, hair cut into a crop. She wears sort of slouchy tops that hang off her shoulder and skinny jeans - sort of like she doesn't care about clothes but looks goos anyway.
She used to wear wide legs jeans that dragged on the ground through puddles etc, but she was too cool to care about it.

Her kids look like are and are also cool.
She has a dog. Even the dog is cool.

Floisme · 18/06/2017 10:13

Bone structure - you may have just nailed it right there.

Damn.

Gruach · 18/06/2017 10:16

Even the dog is cool.

Grin

Thank you!
