How do some people manage to look so effortlessly cool?

Is there a secret to it or do you have to be born with some kind of special 'coolness' gene?

I'd love to be able to chuck on something vintage with a pair of Levi's and look cool, but instead I'd look like I had no decent clothes to wear and had just gone out in the first thing I grabbed off the ironing pile!

Is there anything I can do to make myself look a bit more edgy and cool?

Being slim definitely helps!

WillowWeeping · 13/06/2017 21:58

A lot of these descriptions sound like "well put together" but that doesn't equal cool

Therealslimshady1 · 13/06/2017 22:04

Kate Moss looks cool

She sometimes gets it wrong, but never looks try-hard or wannabe

She does the dishevelled hungover look well Grin

EarlessToothlessVagabond · 13/06/2017 22:10

To me, Emmanuel Alt is effortlessly cool and an older woman too. And bloody French of course. She sticks to a really muted range of non colours and is slightly dishevelled, but it looks good. I'd imagine some people think her style is boring and androgynous but not to me.

vitaminC · 13/06/2017 22:10

I don't think you need to be slim, but toned! All the effortlessly cool people I know seem to have that in common - they're very fit and active, if not downright sporty in some cases.

MrsPorth · 13/06/2017 22:14

Being slender really helps. The only bigger cool person I can think of is Beth Ditto but I wouldn't want to look like her tbh.

SwedishEdith · 13/06/2017 22:15

Audrey is stylish but not effortlessly looking cool.

Floisme · 13/06/2017 22:19

I'll not mention Audrey again for fear of upsetting Remus still further. Blush
Grace Coddington (Anna Wintour's deputy) is cool. Anna is not.

FinnegansCake · 13/06/2017 22:32

Jane Birkin always looks dishevelled. She never appears to have made any effort whatsoever with her appearance, and often looks as though she's just broken off doing her housework to nip into the tv studio for a quick interview, with hair escaping from a messy updo and a simple sweater with sleeves pushed up.
And yet she exudes "cool". I think it's a combination of being totally at ease with her looks, not trying too hard and being tall, slim and flat-chested.
Large breasts never look cool.

I can't believe this thread is dissing Audrey Hepburn. I'm not sure the image of someone who lacked cool would have found its way into a million living rooms as wall art. Or if that's the problem, she can hardly help being ubiquitous.

RhythmAndStealth · 13/06/2017 22:47

Effortlessly cool= caring more about what you do than how you look.

HalfShellHero · 13/06/2017 22:52

Beth ditto? The only cool bigger woman ..really ..Adele? Ashley Graham is stunning!

Vanillamanilla1 · 13/06/2017 22:57

Fearne cotton looks cool

GherkinSnatch · 13/06/2017 22:58

Agree Weeping - well put together doesn't necessarily equal cool. Kate Middleton and the likes would never be classed as cool.

I love Audrey Hepburn - but she's classic rather than cool. Cool is more your Kate Moss, maybe Jennifer Lawrence for someone who's younger/current.

AStickInTime · 13/06/2017 23:16

I wonder if you're born with it.

I wonder this bedside I have two children, and one just oozes cool.

Sometimes he looks normal, sometimes he looks even scruffy and unkempt, but sometimes he knocks together such a cool combo and wears it with such personality, you can't help but chuckle at 'Mr Cool'!

It's how he moves, it's the way he wears his hat, just the whole 'look'. If you were going to draw a cartoon of a cool kid: that's him.

My other son doesn't. My other son is photogenic but not with the same coolness. My other son is well dressed and easy on the eye, and comes across incredibly open and approachable, but doesn't ooze that same coolness of personality.

GherkinSnatch · 13/06/2017 23:19

Another example of cool - Debbie Harry.

MumBod · 13/06/2017 23:30

I think it's something to do with wearing an outfit with one surprising element, usually to knock it back a notch.

For example, I feel cool if I'm wearing smart widelegged trousers and a shirt with a pair of Stan Smiths, or a trouser suit with a t-shirt, or a flowered maxi or midi skirt with converse, or a pretty dress with a denim jacket.

Silver rings are cool, as are gold necklaces.

Cool hair moves about, unless it's a closely cropped pixie.

But I agree that cool mostly comes from within.

Not talking too much also makes people seem cool. I haven't mastered that.

AllPizzasGreatAndSmall · 13/06/2017 23:37

Ashley Graham is stunning!

I had to google her and just got lots of images of a larger woman in swimwear/underwear - nothing about her says cool to me.

nina2b · 14/06/2017 01:39

Alexa Chung is cool.

toffeeboffin · 14/06/2017 01:47

Loath to say it but being thin makes the difference.

toffeeboffin · 14/06/2017 01:49

Cool is one thing, beautiful another.

Debbie Harry certainly was cool, as is Alexa Chung.

Ashley Graham is beautiful but not cool.

AvaCrowder2 · 14/06/2017 02:16

Posture and confidence.

I have a dd who looks remarkably like Audrey Hepburn. She can't help that, it's just the way she looks.

AngelaTwerkel · 14/06/2017 02:39

I think cool dressers aren't afraid to be a bit "out there", which makes them stand out a bit.

But you have to be unconscious about it. If you've decided to braid part of your hair and feel self conscious about it, you'll look like a tit.

It's definitely not being ironed, or groomed, or makeuped, imo.

"Debbie Harry certainly was cool"

She's still alive - 71 and still rocking!
