How do some people manage to look so effortlessly cool?

Is there a secret to it or do you have to be born with some kind of special 'coolness' gene?

I'd love to be able to chuck on something vintage with a pair of Levi's and look cool, but instead I'd look like I had no decent clothes to wear and had just gone out in the first thing I grabbed off the ironing pile!

Is there anything I can do to make myself look a bit more edgy and cool?

Self control, with snacking mostly. Once they'd had their breakfast, that was it. When the cakes arrived it was almost like a game of dare to see who would go there. I haven't seen such peer pressure since school... Eventually a knife was requested so that a sliver of cake could be nibbled.
Plain yoghurt is the recommended snack in French Women Don't Get Fat.

It all sounds like a lot of work to me.

I'm glad I'm "past it"! 😊

I love to see unlikely people becoming cool e.g. Barry Gibb who was once so un-cool even The Goodies took the piss.

Loved Barry Gibb at Glastonbury yesterday. BeeGees were the backdrop to the 70's for me!

MumBod · 26/06/2017 11:58

He was fun, but he wasn't cool. He was far too self-conscious to be cool. Bordering on Alan Partridge at times - he should leave the banter alone.

Great music though.

I've not seen his set so you may be right. But the renaissance of Disco is a wonderful thing. Stayin' Alive has always been one of my favourite songs but it used to be a very guilty pleasure. Now even my son says it sounds ok Grin

And if you'll forgive the digression, this made me laugh:

I can't believe this thread is getting on for two years old. I really enjoyed it - even though Remus got cross with me.

I don't think we ever got to the bottom of it. I'm into androgyny and I wouldn't say I was cool and I don't think an ample bosom should rule you out either. I think it's more to do with seeming not to care, even though you might be paddling furiously under the surface.

To add some more examples (and cos I like to lurk on the royals thread despite being a republican) I think the queen is kind of cool and so is Camilla. But Diana was not (too needy) and nor is Kate (too dutiful). I think it's too early to tell with Meghan.

Being cool is not looking like you are care too much about what you wear - a bit imperfect so laddered tights In otherwsie immaculate outfit is cool. Teenagers are cool because they are beautiful but don’t know it. When you are a teenager you are generally poor so if you care about clothes then you are creative and that creativity makes you cool - your converse are battered, your jeans have holes your coat is second hand. You look gorgeous and you don’t even know it at the time but looking back from this age ( 54) you want to howl.😟

I read through the whole thread. One thing that I think is very important (but to my surprise wasn't mentioned at all) is the following:

Cool people are the ones that are accomplished in their field, are intelligent, have attractive personalities and/or have a talent.
They are the ones who will open their mouth and impress you, being knowledgeable and having studied. They can create trends.

Apart from this, I also agree that being slim and having nice features plays a role. And not giving too many fucks, yes.

So there, these three things for me, and in this order:

  1. Personality/Knowledge/Talent
  2. Beauty
  3. No fucks attitude
