How do some people manage to look so effortlessly cool?

Is there a secret to it or do you have to be born with some kind of special 'coolness' gene?

I'd love to be able to chuck on something vintage with a pair of Levi's and look cool, but instead I'd look like I had no decent clothes to wear and had just gone out in the first thing I grabbed off the ironing pile!

Is there anything I can do to make myself look a bit more edgy and cool?

Anita Pallenberg Sad

DavetheCat2001 · 14/06/2017 18:17

I always think Siobhan Fahey ex Bananarama looks amazing. She's well into her 50's now and still looks beautiful and youthful in an edgy way..not chocolate box pretty in anyway, but very striking.

Fab figure and I think she looks amazing.

DavetheCat2001 · 14/06/2017 18:20

Just a few more as I think she warrants it!

My god she's actually 58! Shock

squoosh · 14/06/2017 18:29

I didn't even recognise Siobhan Fahey in the recent Banarama promo pics.

EarlessToothlessVagabond · 14/06/2017 18:39

Siobhan Fahey is gorge. I loved Shakespeare's Sister Blush. She can't sing for toffee though.

DavetheCat2001 · 14/06/2017 18:49

No agreed on the singing but she is beautiful.

The other two scrub up ok, but they always look a bit too 'middle aged mums dollied up for a girls nite out' to me.

Siobhan has that genuine youthfullnes without the trowelled on make up.

bialystockandbloom · 14/06/2017 18:53

Nothing really to do with being 'beautiful' imo.

Bob Dylan was cool. John Lennon and George Harrison cool. Paul McCartney and Ringo weren't (aren't).

MakeItStopNeville · 14/06/2017 18:55

Omg. I LOVED Siobhan Fahey! And I think Audrey Hepburn was cool too but it goes to show how differently people regard cool.

One thing's for sure, if you're on a parenting website saying you're cool, you most certainly aren't! Grin

squoosh · 14/06/2017 18:56

Siobhan has that genuine youthfullnes without the trowelled on make up.

And a bit of genuine cosmetic intervention

MakeItStopNeville · 14/06/2017 18:58

And I don't think Mary Kate and Ashley are cool either. They just do that extremely wealthy SoHo/West Village thing very well, like half the people that live there. Carol Radziwell does it too.

Cocolepew · 14/06/2017 19:07

Siobhan definitely has had work done, she was definitely cooler than the other 2 though.
Josh Homme is very cool.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 14/06/2017 19:10

Yes to John Lennon. Also - Jarvis Cocker. Also, and I realise this one may be a bit niche - Billy Connolly.

Cocolepew · 14/06/2017 19:11

Queen Debbie is the epitome of cool.

I think there should be a law that if you're not an actual fan you're forbidden to wear them.

me too, but sadly my actual favourite band (which is very identifying, but it's a metal band that was biggest in the 80s) is hard to come by on a t-shirt. Sometimes I wish I was a big Ramones or G'n'R fan just for the readily available shirts!

Things I think make a person look cool:

Not necessarily super tall or thin, but walk tall, with confident body language

If you're white, being a bit brown (I haven't got a hope of achieving that and won't even try, but I have to admit I do think it looks cool)

Healthy looking hair, preferably not totally straight unless it's quite thick. A messy bun usually looks cool. if your hair's a bit sunbleached that can look cool too.

The right jeans! There's a right fit out there for everyone, I just haven't found mine yet.

Rolling up your jeans not too perfectly when it's hot. Wide linen trousers are quite cool too.

Wearing cotton, or something that looks like cotton. Shiny is never cool.

A leather jacket that fits well and doesn't look too shinily new.

Not looking sweaty (unless you're running) - again I haven't managed to crack that one yet.

Unfussy accessories - a beaten up old leather bag, chunky silver rings, that sort of thing. Maybe a unisex straw hat or a trilby, if you look like you're wearing it because the weather demands it, and not just because you think it looks cool!

Most stripy tops look cool on most people - but again, natural fibres and loose is better than tight.

Converses, Superga or similar. Beat up old boots in winter. If you need heels, really plain classic black courts are probably the best.

Personally I never feel cool exactly in a skirt or a dress, although I might feel stylish or well put together when I get it right. Some other people look cool in them though. I'm not sure what the magic ingredient is.

But I also know people who look cool in all the "wrong" things so I think it's true to some extent that some people are just born cool.

DavetheCat2001 · 14/06/2017 19:20

What work do you think she has had? Botox? Fillers?

i'm tempted

Floisme · 14/06/2017 19:22

Yeah I was just thinking we weren't really answering the op which was more about how to look cool. My considered opinion is....

Search me.

I don't think it's any individual item of clothing.
It may be something to do with having a clear sense of your own style and a 'signature look' - which rules me out straight away.
And yes to confidence and poise (this is getting like the 'expensive' thread) Happy in your own skin ... hmm does this rule out anyone who's had a lot of cosmetic work done?

I think it's hard to look cool when you're a teenager because it's often a time when you feel really insecure about your looks and you're desperate to fit in.

TeamRick · 14/06/2017 20:51

I have a friend who always looks effortlessly cool but actually puts in loads of effort!
Spends a lot of money of clothes but she spends hours trying on different combinations of clothes and writing down outfits in a note book!
I'd like to look as good as she does but really couldn't be bothered with all that!

2017SoFarSoGood · 14/06/2017 21:00

Have told this before, but was walking behind a very cool older woman one day last winter and thought she looked marvelous; elegant and yet exuding a coolness that was brillliant! I have been making more of an effort to tell woman when I think they look great (we all love that!) so put a step on it to catch her up and say something. It was Shirley MacLaine. I didn't say anything Blush Should have though; bet even she would have appreciated it

bananafish81 · 14/06/2017 21:30

Cool rather than polished is nothing too matchy matchy, and good clashes

Floral dress with tights and heels = not cool
Floral dress with tights and scuzzy work boots = cool

If something is dressed up then rough it up a bit with something else a bit grungey

Cool = not too fitted, not too baggy, just the right amount of slouchy

Or if you do fitted then it should be mega fitted - super tight skinnies with a drapey top. Nothing tailored.

I always feel cooler in little tea dresses with biker boots

I've promised myself that in autumn I'm going to let myself splurge on a really good pair of leather leggings.

Leather leggings with tight top and heels = not cool

Leather leggings with a baggy sweater or oversized mens shirt and flats = cool

(IMO)

That said I can wear these and still look desperately uncool because I end up a sweaty heap on the tube and my artfully applied natural makeup slides off!

ModernTimes · 14/06/2017 21:54

I think that cool, in the everyday sense ( as opposed to having the latitude that celebrity allows), is often about having enough confidence and enough of an 'eye' to incorporate some incongruity or dissonance into whatever you're wearing.

Therealslimshady1 · 14/06/2017 22:21

Moderntimes, yes

Looking too groomed and put together can make you look the opposite of cool

Floisme · 15/06/2017 07:22

Remus I agree about Billy Connolly - hurray! Anyone who can make me laugh is cool.

The make up/grooming one is weird I think. One of my ex bosses was always immaculately groomed, wore classic clothes, was probably a size 16 and she definitely had it. I couldn't tell you why other than that she had a confidence about her. She wore her make-up - it never wore her.

buggerthebotox · 15/06/2017 07:52

Debbie Harry was always the epitome of cool...

I think to look cool there has to be something "else" about you. Something a bit unconventional maybe? And not age-dependent either.

Cool people look good in a bin bag.

I think biker boots usually manage to look cool, particularly when teamed with something ultra-feminine. I think big jewellery can look cool in the right context. I think slim people are more likely to be cool.

I find it easier to notice when people are not cool. Kate C is not cool, and neither is Pippa. Audrey H WAS cool, in a way, because she had her own enduring style. Siobhan Fahey-yes. She was always cooler than the other Bananas. Lily Allen is cool. Chrissie Hynde is cool.

I think asymmetric hairstyles are cool. Short hair, imo, tends to be cooler than long . All Saints is cool.

I think you can be cool and glamorous but glamour doesn't automatically signal cool.

I think Gwen Stefani is cool, as she is good looking and glamorous but with an unconventional edge.

It's definitely about edge.

mumoffour1715144 · 15/06/2017 09:24

Love Iris Apfel style, not that I could replicate it, however I do have the glasses. Im Brit Asian, 41 and wear combo of western and eastern.

I think it is confidence but also understanding what suits you physically and then applying it to your style presences.

I finally understand after 20 years of bad fashion experiences what style and shape of dress/trousers fits. Skinnies, boot leg or flare don't suit me, I now understand that chinos are best fit wise and stow wise. Also just above the knee tunics, dresses or smocks as I wear them with jeans and chinos
