How do some people manage to look so effortlessly cool?

Is there a secret to it or do you have to be born with some kind of special 'coolness' gene?

I'd love to be able to chuck on something vintage with a pair of Levi's and look cool, but instead I'd look like I had no decent clothes to wear and had just gone out in the first thing I grabbed off the ironing pile!

Is there anything I can do to make myself look a bit more edgy and cool?

Cool to mean is when someone wears what the hell they like and doesn't give a toss, sometimes you look at what they are wearing and you're not sure if it's amazing or gross! Kate Moss has it, Alexa Chung does to a certain degree but I get the impression she try's hard, Johnny Depp has it, Helena Christensen always looks amazing off duty. For me it's about looking a bit scruffy but also well put together all at the same time! 😂

BusterGonad · 14/06/2017 06:59

Cool to me, I mean!

Floisme · 14/06/2017 07:17

I'm not dissing Audrey Hepburn. Lots and lots of stunning women don't have it.

Debbie Harry still has it. Madonna had it in the early 80s but she's lost it. Sofia Coppola has it and Sarah Harris (the fashion journalist). And that actress whose name I can never remember and who some of you think wears weird stuff - she's got it.

I think it's something to do with how you carry yourself - posture. So that's me screwed.

villainousbroodmare · 14/06/2017 07:29

Flustered is the opposite of cool. So excessive stuff hanging off you, be it hair that you're pushing back, a scarf that looks like you have to hold it, too much jewellery, a bag sliding off your shoulder or crammed with stuff definitely knocks out cool.
I don't think you necessarily have to be slim but your clothes must fit you.

Floisme · 14/06/2017 07:34

I should of course be adding 'in my opinion' after every name but I'm lazy - and not in a cool way.

Chathamhouserules · 14/06/2017 07:44

I don't think slim is a prerequisite but I think long legs help! Clothes look better on people with long legs. I'm not bitter about this honest...
Wearing stuff that has something just a bit different about it, which makes it look fab in a subtle way.

Suzietwo · 14/06/2017 07:47

Audrey = not cool
Marilyn = cool (how can that amount of sexy be anything but?)
Bridget = super cool (and French natch)
Alexa = massive irritating try hard
Katherine Hepburn = cool
Debbie harry = cool
Vivienne Westwood. = cool (but wearing her clothes doesn't Bec make the wearer cool)

Strummerville · 14/06/2017 07:51

that actress whose name I can never remember and who some of you think wears weird stuff

Eva Green?

Floisme · 14/06/2017 08:00

If you mean Marilyn Monroe then I don't agree she had cool. Very beautiful and sexy but too vulnerable to be cool, poor woman.

Thanks for the suggestion but it wasn't Eva Green although I think she's got it too. I think her name begins with M though not sure if it's first name or second. This is going to drive me nuts all day now.

Chathamhouserules · 14/06/2017 08:08

Marilynn coutilard? She is pretty cool

BusterGonad · 14/06/2017 08:08

Brandon Flowers had it when he wore a sequin suit at Glastonbury festival!

surferjet · 14/06/2017 08:14

Being tall and slim helps!

ThinkFastNotSlow · 14/06/2017 08:20

that actress whose name I can never remember and who some of you think wears weird stuff - she's got it.

I'm going for Tilda Swinton. She is modern day beautiful and super cool, for me. And yes, she too is tall, slim and rather petite in the bosom department I'm not bitter, oh no

GherkinSnatch · 14/06/2017 08:28

that actress whose name I can never remember and who some of you think wears weird stuff - she's got it.

Helena Bonham Carter?

I agree about Marilyn Monroe - very beautiful, but not cool. Also Ashley Graham - not cool.

I've been thinking about this this morning. Angelina Jolie is cool - again coming back to that not following fashion/looking like she doesn't care about what people think of how she looks/air of cool thing.

George Clooney is cool in an old fashioned/non edgy way - Brad Pitt is neither.

Alex Turner from the Artic Monkeys - not cool. He looks like he cares too much and tries too hard.

Listen to me, talking like some sort of oracle of cool like I haven't got DD's porridge in my hair.

MumBod · 14/06/2017 08:30

Mary-Kate and Ashley are, weirdly.

LilyMcClellan · 14/06/2017 08:30

Skinny + something incongruous (e.g. androgeous clothing, nana clothes on a young person, high/low contrast etc) + limited apparent effort + confidence

LilyMcClellan · 14/06/2017 08:31

Mary-Kate is cool but Ashley is less so.

ChampagneSocialist1 · 14/06/2017 08:38

I think it's a thing a lots of teenagers have, then lose as they get older

dresdenshepherdess · 14/06/2017 08:41

Is there a difference between rock chic and cool?
I think Kate Moss does the rock chic thing but is not necessarily cool.

What about Bryan Ferry, Michael Hutchence, Annie Lennox, Tina Turner?

dresdenshepherdess · 14/06/2017 08:45

Stevie Nicks was cool in the 70's and early 80s.

Sleepthief · 14/06/2017 08:55

Chloe Sevigny?

Floisme · 14/06/2017 09:04

Yes Tilda Swinton - that's her! Like I said, the name begins with 'M' Grin
Thanks so much Thinks and everyone else who made suggestions - at least I can get on with some work now.

ElspethFlashman · 14/06/2017 09:14

You know who I think is cool? Tracie Ellis Ross. I'm completely obsessed with her Instagram. She is simultaneously cool and doesn't give a fuck and has a ball. I have a massive girl crush.

Anyone with shiny hair is automatically the opposite of cool to me. Deal breaker.

ElspethFlashman · 14/06/2017 09:16

Oh and Kim France of Girls of a Certain Age. She wears harem pants, clogs, khaki shirts open loads and masses of silver jewellery. Also unkempt hair and a bit of red lipstick. And she's in her 50s. She's really cool.

7Days · 14/06/2017 09:19

Cool people wear what they like, but here is the difference, they always look as if they are on the way to someplace more interesting than here, and will be totally comfortable doing so. Not flustered and self conscious. Did not spend time planning an outfit. Did not consider your eyes or judgement as they were too busy thinking about what they will be doing next.
Its that little touch of arrogance and disdain that makes people flock to them.
