Looking for a non-white dress for (my) wedding

I'm getting married early next year. It's my second marriage (I'm widowed) and my fiancé's first.

Between my father in his uniform (retired from armed forces), my DD's in huge, meringue-style tulle and sequin bridesmaid dresses, and my gorgeous and very tall fiancé in his morning suit, I don't want to let the side down. Smile But neither do I feel it would be right to wear a traditional white wedding dress again. And certainly no veil.

I spent a few weeks designing a dress with a friend who is a (professional) dressmaker and we came up with a plan for a long, silk bias cut dove-grey dress with a cape back. But my sister has put me off it by saying I'd look like a nun, and my friend has a lot of work on and if I want to commission anything else I'd need to confirm it with her quickly. However she has pencilled in time to do alterations to something off the peg, which feels more sensible at this stage.

So I'm looking for long dresses that are silver or blush pink. I want at least a short sleeve and certainly not strapless.

We're getting married in a church and having our reception in a rather grand library. I'm just turning 40, 5'6 and size 10 but big norks and broad shouldered so sometimes have to size up if it's high necked and tight across the top. I'm short waisted (if I put on weight I'm an apple) but slim hips/long legs. Pouffey skirts don't look as good on me as slim-fitting skirts. Oh and we're TTC so I don't want something super tight across the waist just in case. Smile

I've budgeted up to a thousand pounds but I'd rather spend as little as possible less. If I couldn't get something at that budget I could increase it but I'd rather not.

I've ordered a returned a few things that were too shiny or a weird shape. And I've pounded the pavements at a designer outlet village this afternoon. I tried on a gorgeous fuschia and cream Temperley dress that I loved but it didn't feel bridal somehow.

Any ideas gratefully received.

I like that, but I don't have the Middleton-girl arse. More of a flat runners arse.

<a class="break-all" href="//hwww.theoutnet.com/en-GB/product/Badgley-Mischka/Embellished-cape-effect-cady-gown/806151" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">maybe something like this? Or too floaty?

herethereandeverywhere · 10/10/2016 19:56

Would you consider second hand? There are lots of amazing dresses on preloved.co.uk, including ones like Jenny Packham with otherwise long order times and massive price tags.

Somerville · 10/10/2016 19:57

Sorry for no tulle rule Scoose.

Ma-y-be... that phase eight bert. Its a bit tame compared to some of the lusciousness we've found so far on this thread.

That link not working for me MrsLettuce?

Definitely will consider second hand.

I'm second hand. Smile

Thanks for that link.

here, sorry!

Somerville · 10/10/2016 19:59

And I don't mean that in a disparaging way, before a fellow wid gives me a ticking off again. Grin

not sure if this has been linked already

MrsLettuce · 10/10/2016 20:05

Have you thought about having your original design made in white/ivory? Or is there not time left?

this really does look like a nun's habit.

herethereandeverywhere · 10/10/2016 20:06

As I came back to the thread I suddenly has a massive realisation that you might have been hugely insulted by the reference Somerville - I hope you have indeed taken it in good humour it was totally unintentional on my part Blush

And 'preloved' sounds a bit better. Reminds me of the lovely reading from the Velveteen Rabbit that always makes me cry.

Somerville · 10/10/2016 20:08

Those are all nice.

I need to try a load of things on, I think.

I know what shapes and fabrics I don't want. But no idea what I really do want. And need to get used to the sight of myself in white to make sure I can definitely do it.

I like the thought of his face as I walk down the aisle in white now he's imagining colour.

Ah that's lovely and not soppy at all I just love an excuse to look at beautiful dresses Grin and what about your shoes! If you need any help with those I don't mind helping Grin

Somerville · 10/10/2016 20:18

Not offended at all, herethere. Quite the opposite. When he proposed he told me how happy it makes him that I spent most my my adult life being loved. Pre-loved when we're being romantic or second hand (with a 4 for the price of 1 special deal Grin) when we're mucking around is one of our things. Smile

Ted Baker

Does it have to be long? This Ted Baker one is gorgeous

OlennasWimple · 10/10/2016 20:25

If we're on to white, please show your sister this dress - if Valentino made nuns habits...

OlennasWimple · 10/10/2016 20:26

May have linked this one earlier, but it's mostly white, with sleeves and is lined in silk

OlennasWimple · 10/10/2016 20:27

Marchesa silk organza but no sleeves

Laska5772 · 10/10/2016 20:30

Oh, that Marchesa one is fabulous Olennas Ill have to ask DH to remarry me now

Somerville · 10/10/2016 20:30

Grin at the world most expensive habit.

Not telling dsis any of this - don't want to listen to I told you so. I'll make her think that it is entirely my idea to wear white after all. Grin

I really need the outnet to process my last return so I can order some of those beauties for a try.

Slinky

OlennasWimple · 10/10/2016 20:40

I think I need to plan a wedding anniversary party to give me an excuse for a wonderful dress (my wedding dress was fine, but not amazing - no OutNet in those days...) Blush

Somerville · 10/10/2016 20:42

White Temperley 😍😍
