are dresses with black leggings unfashionable?

I'm tall and don't like my legs from the knee up, searched the Internet and can't find any dresses that are long enough, I don't suit skirts or maxi dresses so planning on getting through the summer wearing dresses with black leggings underneath. Is this terrible? Or ok? I wore this style throughout my pregnancy but could defiantly get away with it then.

No idea about fashion but I'm 5ft 9 so I struggle with short dresses as well, and I literally wear leggings every day either either a long top / dress, or a normal top & a skirt. I've never felt out of place or frumpy, and it seems to be a fairly common look at uni (I'm a mature student so fully exposed to all the current fashions - terrible contouring and all!)

BTW I hate the misuse of the word 'literally', I really do mean that I actually only ever wear leggings unless I'm dressed up for a formal event. I hate jeans and I don't suit long dresses.

the very WORD tunic makes me feel a bit ill

leggings and loose dresses are a dead cert way to lose weight

JackandDiane · 12/05/2016 21:31

hhah GAIN weight

Observe. And listen. Caitlin Moran wearing black leggings under a dress (and Lauren Lavern in the background possibly also wearing leggings and a dress) talking about getting your legs out in the summer.

motherinferior · 12/05/2016 22:23

I don't want to encase myself in uncomfortable clothes just to make sure I don't put on weight.

phoebemac · 12/05/2016 22:26

Fancy a Gin & TUNIC JackandDiane?

Floisme · 12/05/2016 22:30

I quite like the word 'frumpy'. It's expressive. I think it's time to reclaim it.

motherinferior · 12/05/2016 22:31

Hums a TUNIC...

JackandDiane · 12/05/2016 22:31

Good grief, leggings and a long top =sweltering! Like all those poor little girls with frou frou dresses and great thick leggings, ugh.

Just let it breathe, and get out the Lanacane for thigh rub.

ilove · 12/05/2016 22:43

I have several pairs of Capri length white leggings that I wear under dresses in summer with sandals, and it looks lovely. I also have black full length ones I wear in winter with dresses and boots, so like thick tights but without the inevitable struggle with fit.

BennyTheBall · 12/05/2016 23:00

I tried to watch that link but I really, really can't abide Caitlin Moran so lasted about 10 seconds.

TheDowagerCuntess · 12/05/2016 23:22

Leggings are a bit marmite, I think - you either swear by them, or you hate them.

Going by this thread, the overwhelming majority (of women in the UK) swear by them, so just wear them if you want/need to.

QueenCarpetJewels · 13/05/2016 01:33

Probably not what you want to hear OP, but just WEAR WHAT THE FUCK YOU WANT.

Seriously.

"Apart from the look there is the hygiene implications." Err... what hygiene implications? No different to wearing, I don't know, let's say for example, knickers or knickers and tights.

Unfashionable, frumpy, ghastly, etc. are just words from people who seem to think they're entitled to an opinion on what other people wear.

If it's comfortable to you, wear it.
If it's uncomfortable to you, wear something else.

JackandDiane · 13/05/2016 01:53

White leggings = bandage

Whyarethebestnamestaken · 13/05/2016 08:34

I love wearing leggings and long tops around the house as they are so comfy but don't have the nerve to wear them out.

I find it hard to have the self confidence and would love to find tunics/dresses that are longer than a top that hit about mid thigh as I think that dresses much longer than that draw attention to the fact that I hate my legs.

I am a flabby 14 so not fat but also have flabby upper arms which `i need to keep covered up and also 63 so not so young any more although I feel 21 LOL.

Does anyone have any links to longer tunic/tops or short dresses that would look good with leggings. I am also thinking about capri length for summer and tried on some capri length trousers in M and S the other day but they looked awful on me. I think capri length jeans may be better but need something high waisted as otherwise they fall down and I have lots of muffin top then.

Thanks.

NapQueen · 13/05/2016 08:47

My go to daytime outfit when I'm not at work (or in Pjs) is black leggings with either a breton striped tshirt dress or a navy tartan tunic. It's comfy, not too hot (north east anyways so never hot here!), and looks nice, imo.

I wouldn't get my legs out without tights or leggings - not for anyone else I just don't feel comfortable.

FancyShrew · 13/05/2016 12:57

I love this look, especially skater style dress and slightly shorter leggings with converse or pretty pumps.

angielou123 · 13/05/2016 13:03

I live in leggings. Dresses in summer and long tops other times. I do prefer black though, the grey look a bit washed out plus black goes with every other colour.

blitheringbuzzards1234 · 13/05/2016 13:18

For me I'd find black leggings too hot and dark for summer but if they suit you that's fine. Have you thought about making dresses yourself? Then you can adapt the length to suit your height. I bet most of us hate our legs (especially our thighs) but I don't give a tinker's cuss what other people think of mine.

Wincher · 13/05/2016 13:28

Today for work I'm wearing a grey dress which is so short it would be indecent if I wasn't wearing it with black leggings! I wear this sort of combo a lot.

ItGoesWithoutSaying · 13/05/2016 14:31

I recently bought a few pairs of footless tights (60 denier) as my feet are getting too warm on tights over the last week or so.

I realise these may be a worse fashion faux-pas than leggings, but I like them.

honeyharris · 13/05/2016 14:35

This is what I wear around half of the time. I'm 5 foot 10 and slim but lily white with a few gnarly varicose veins on my calves (had them since my 20s, much much worse since having my DS). I like it, didn't realise it had ever been in or out of fashion, just thought it was a perfectly acceptable thing to wear. Might venture into a lighter colour of legging though.
