are dresses with black leggings unfashionable?

I'm tall and don't like my legs from the knee up, searched the Internet and can't find any dresses that are long enough, I don't suit skirts or maxi dresses so planning on getting through the summer wearing dresses with black leggings underneath. Is this terrible? Or ok? I wore this style throughout my pregnancy but could defiantly get away with it then.

Oh that sounded disrespectful coming after your post. Sorry mother! Flowers

motherinferior · 16/05/2016 21:50

Not at all. Hope you feel better soon!

Ok. So what should one wear instead of dress and leggings? What would the leggings nay sayers advise to those who can't imagine dresses without leggings?
I'm genuinely interested as to what outfits would not incur criticism

FutureGadgetsLab · 16/05/2016 21:51

Every outfit will incur criticism from someone!

For me tights are always better than leggings.

SpringSpringSpring · 16/05/2016 22:18

I really thought this was just a white stuff thing until I read this thread and now I'm wondering if I would spend more time in my summer dresses if I owned leggings (usually I find the UK freezing in summer).

So, for a quick mumsnet-inspired survey I spent two train journeys and day on uni campus staring at legs and only saw three dresses+leggings combos - none were looking stylish (IMO) and two were with small children so definitely seemed a practicality thing.

Polkadot1974 · 16/05/2016 22:20

What I mean is from those who don't like dresses with them, what would they wear or suggest? I hate the thought I'm dating myself in my dresses but just don't have legs which can come out
I'm really interested what a "good" Spring outfit would be from all corners. Skinny jeans also passé? The fashion pages in magazines seem crazy - last one I saw had flip flops with ankle socks as genuine suggestion

Grin Fashion has officially run out of sensible ideas.

Nausauer here

Just wear the dress without the leggings

All the leggings wearers say they don't care how they look and why not just bare your legs on a warm day then? I have veins and cellulite and saggy knees and happily wear dresses or skirts.

Though when you have toddlers I can see the practicality of leggings.

Wear them, it's not fashionable but who cares.

The toddler years are about making it through the day Grin not fashion

LumpySpacedPrincess · 17/05/2016 07:19

Lots of people have said they wear the leggings for practical reasons too. I work with kids so could not wear just a dress.

rollonthesummer · 17/05/2016 07:26

Just wear the dress without the leggings.

It's too cold!! Leggings make me warm. Otherwise there would only be 5 days a year when I could wear any dresses!!

QuimWilde · 17/05/2016 08:17

Leggings guard against chub rub too. I'm a size 18 but used to get it even when I was a size 8. For this reason, and others besides, leggings are my friend.

CreviceImp · 17/05/2016 08:36

Personally I think if leggings are worn with longline tops/sleek tunics they can look great.

Far preferable seeing leggings than corn beef legs or a woman feeling uncomfortably exposed.

A lot of comments on this thread are utter tosh. It is a bit like saying you hate all dresses. It is very much about how you put it stuff together.

I like bootcut/flared/skinny jeans too. I think the narrow-minded attitude from some 'style' posters is a bit tragic. I do draw the line at those cropped flare feckers mind worn with those hideous trodden down at the back pointed loafers......

NapQueen · 17/05/2016 08:58

I'm wearing navy leggings and a navy/white stripe tunic/dress today. With this thread in my ear I tried just the dress first. I don't like my legs, have large calves (thanks hockey!), fat above my knees and they are quite pale. Not only do I look better (still no supermodel!) With the leggings on, I feel infinitely more comfortable - which in the end is what matters.

Whyarethebestnamestaken · 17/05/2016 08:58

I think the key is to not have the dress/tunic too long and avoid the Sarah Millicam look. In summer they can look nice with cropped leggings and I am aiming for a casual and comfy but not fashionable look.

I looked at white cropped leggings in Matalan but bit scared of buying them as they seem a bit see through which would not be a good look. Does anyone know of any that are thicker like the Sainsburys ones?
