are dresses with black leggings unfashionable?

I'm tall and don't like my legs from the knee up, searched the Internet and can't find any dresses that are long enough, I don't suit skirts or maxi dresses so planning on getting through the summer wearing dresses with black leggings underneath. Is this terrible? Or ok? I wore this style throughout my pregnancy but could defiantly get away with it then.

Yes it's fine, and wear what you like and all that.

But I think dress without leggings looks nicer.

Just flash the flesh 😉

I am 6ft and have unpretty legs, but still go barelegged as that feels so much nicer.

Lots of places do "midi dresses" now which are knee length on me (6ft)

megletthesecond · 12/05/2016 17:43

Probably. But I have excess hair and an air conditioned office so leggings under dresses are sadly a necessity.

JackandDiane · 12/05/2016 17:44

Yes

LikeASoulWithoutAMind · 12/05/2016 17:49

I also think midi dresses would work really well for you OP. I like those floaty summery trousers too (think they are harem pants, not sure!)

If you do want to pair a dress with leggings, then I think it looks better if the dress is slightly shorter than knee length and perhaps choose leggings to coordinate with the colour of the dress rather than always black?

diddl · 12/05/2016 17:57

I can't really see the point of leggings under a summer dress & would have thought that tights are cooler if bare legs really are a no.

paulapantsdown · 12/05/2016 18:00

Why is impossible to find dresses in a proper length though? I am 5'8 and would really love to wear dresses for work, but everything I see in the shops is bum skimming.

Leggings are the only solution until shops start selling things women actually want to buy ..... don't get me started on bloody sleeves!

BennyTheBall · 12/05/2016 18:03

I think it can be a bit of a frumpy look, but it's a great solution for overweight women or those who hate their legs.

My friend often wears leggings under dresses as she's very overweight, but I think on her, it looks nicer than without.

Girlwhowearsgoggles · 12/05/2016 18:09

Coloured leggings. Must match dress. Black leggings + dress/top only works with black or graphicky top. Florals or colours need colours.

I have purple, green, electric blue, and erm... Iridescent blue and iridescent purple.

Esspee · 12/05/2016 18:11

I can't believe anyone would want to wear leggings in the summer months, especially black ones. Apart from the look there is the hygiene implications.
Have none of you heard the phrase anchovy jam?

gabbyevs · 12/05/2016 18:12

why does it have to be classed as fashinable-who decides these things

i wear leggings all the time with long tops hate my legs and i small belive me ive seen worse

lljkk · 12/05/2016 18:15

I have American & have worn black leggings under dresses for 25 yrs. For a while you couldn't easily buy black leggings which was quite stressful. Almost as bad as when skinny jeans went out & everyone sold stupid boot cut or flares jeans instead.

Really glad to hear black leggings with dresses might be going out of fashion. Confused the blank out of me to ever do something fashionable.

MrsGuyOfGisbo · 12/05/2016 18:17

have unpretty legs, but still go barelegged as that feels so much nicer.
Exactly!!
Why care what others think about your legs?
If you wear the ghastly 'dress and leggings' because you don't care what people say about you being unfashionable and frumpy, why not actually be more comfortable with dress and no leggings and not care what people think about you...
Definite logic fail on some posts here.

blinkowl · 12/05/2016 18:19

I care because I can move freely with leggings on.

Without I need to make sure I'm not moving in a way that will encourage my dress to blow up (eg running for the train would be out) and I find it a pain to always have to make sure I am sitting so that nothing is inadvertently on show.

I find short dresses without leggings limiting of my movements.

I'd much rather wear leggings and feel unrestricted.

lljkk · 12/05/2016 18:22

Barelegged riding a fast bike sounds horrible. Plus the dress would blow up & show my knix to all & sundry.
Leggins are warm & practical.

shamelessmailhack · 12/05/2016 18:24

I honestly don't find black leggings that sweaty during the summer. Nice cotton ones feel pretty good. Maybe I just don't sweat much.

I feel that I HAVE to wear leggings when running after DS. Last time I went bare legged I bent over to pick him up in the playground, and apparently flashed my knickers to the world. Blush Even at 5ft7 I find that the majority of dresses that are supposed to be 'knee length' are actually mid-thigh. So I'm just going to be frumpy and unfashionable, and patiently wait for leggings to come back into fashion.

MsBH · 12/05/2016 18:48

As a person in her early 30's with horrific, hereditary varicose veins!! If I want to wear pretty summer dresses, leggings are a must. I didn't realise I was so unfashionable but still rather that than painfully insecure about my ugly legs

Floisme · 12/05/2016 19:02

Where do you lot live? Round here, it's warm enough for bare legs about 2 weeks of the year.

TheDowagerCuntess · 12/05/2016 19:05

As you can see, it's clearly a prevalent enough look. If you like it, and it makes you feel more comfortable/secure, then go for it - you'll be in great company.

I'm tall and only wear leggings for running. I think a pair of black leggings ruins (way too strong a word, but can't think of another) many otherwise lovely summer outfits. Black doesn't go with everything, and almost always doesn't go with many lovely summer print dresses.

I don't wear them for that reason - I actually hate my (shapeless) legs, but still can't bring myself to wear leggings. I wear knee-length dresses, thin cigarette/capri pants, knee-length shorts. I am a trouser person, and so my summer default tends to be slim-cut, light-weight trousers and a sleeveless top. It's cooler than leggings, anyway.

I'm sure those preferences would be hideous for some people - who cares really, if it's what makes you feel comfortable.

Tanaqui · 12/05/2016 19:30

I have seen people look fab in this look- a few years ago practically every woman whose look I liked at a theme park had Capri leggings and a short dress (v practical for rides I guess!, and the teen and preteen girls all had leggings or tights with shorts- for the same reason I suspect) and it looked great, so I bought some- cannot get it to look good on me.

Think loulabelles look sound lovely- but I look awful in a blazer!

What I am saying I suppose is it is all down to your body shape and personal style.

shamelessmailhack · 12/05/2016 19:52

Black leggings don't really co-ordinate with summery dresses, but wearing coloured leggings, especially capri ones, can make you look like a CBeebies presenter. Grin

It is fun to bounce around singing 'Big Fun Time' though.

phoebemac · 12/05/2016 20:29

Not sure where Runningupthathill82 lives but I guess it isn't London? I see a few student types and 20 somethings wearing this style on the tube every day as well as older women. Nothing wrong with it all.

"Frumpy"
"Mumsy"
"A mum look"
"Anchovy jam (!)"

Women using these terms to insult other women's choice of clothing is so depressing.

nanetterose · 12/05/2016 20:44

I think it looks lovely. It looks put together & simple. Please wear what you like. I agree, some of the spiteful posts on S&B are very depressing.
Oh, and l've seen masses of young woman in this look.

I wear coloured leggings with skirts too! WinkShock

PregnantAndEngaged · 12/05/2016 21:19

What about black tights? I think that looks more feminine and a little cooler in the warm weather

I've just started to wear this combo as I'm in my new incarnation as a sahm and I want to avail of all the perks which, as far as I'm concerned, includes wearing mum looks which are more casual than I would have got away with at my old job.

After 15 years of wearing tights and suits I feel fucking great in leggings and a dress or tunic, along with a nice pair of ballet pumps (don't care) or Supergas. No, it's not fashion, but it's comfy and presentable enough, which is fine for me.

I'm in Ireland so no need to worry about getting too hot. No hygiene issues either, thanks PP. Try showering more often and wearing cotton if you have that problem.
