are dresses with black leggings unfashionable?

I'm tall and don't like my legs from the knee up, searched the Internet and can't find any dresses that are long enough, I don't suit skirts or maxi dresses so planning on getting through the summer wearing dresses with black leggings underneath. Is this terrible? Or ok? I wore this style throughout my pregnancy but could defiantly get away with it then.

Also, my DC realised they could hide under the last maxi dress I bought. turned it into a teepee

Hahaha my son tries to hide in my (midi) dresses when I sit down.

At 18 she would probably look gorgeous in anything - why dress herself up in mumsy garb?

She doesn't see it as 'mumsy garb', and neither do her friends of the same age who dress the same way. They all look gorgeous.

QuimWilde · 16/05/2016 18:25

Just look at all these frumps in their mumsy garb!

Nah. Still not feeling it.

DerelictMyBalls · 16/05/2016 18:38

Each one of those outfits would be improved by removing the leggings.

JingsAndCrivens · 16/05/2016 18:41

I don't despise leggings as a whole clothing sub species. Leather leggings as mentioned above can look ace, leggings worn with a (bum covering) denim shirt can look great too. But it's the Sarah Millicanisation of putting them under a dress that I don't like.

motherinferior · 16/05/2016 18:53

I think those outfits only work with the leggings. Tights would turn them Ladylike.

GlassCircles · 16/05/2016 19:12

See to me tights represent corporate servitude or (v) old lady (and I am over 50). Neither of which are chic. Opaques just about sneak under the radar, but only because they look a bit like leggings.

TheDowagerCuntess · 16/05/2016 19:28

Most of those outfits would be vastly improved by the removal of the leggings.

I don't even like opaques - it's the blackness for me. Probably I notice it more when the black just doesn't go with the colour of the dress. In some of those photos above, the outfits are styled well and the black doesn't jar, so they look ok.

Jessica Alba in that beautiful white summer dress ... and black leggings!

GlassCircles · 16/05/2016 19:38

I think there's something empowering about leggings though. Without them, you veer towards 'bint in a short skirt'.

FutureGadgetsLab · 16/05/2016 19:43

They'd all look much better without leggings.

GlassCircles · 16/05/2016 19:52

I think these poor girls would look tarty impractically exposed with bare legs though. And the average lumpy legged woman would just look shit.

motherinferior · 16/05/2016 20:33

GlassCircles, you are my kind of gal.

FutureGadgetsLab · 16/05/2016 20:37

I don't think there's anything tarty about bare legs. I don't think there's anything shit about average legs either!

QuimWilde · 16/05/2016 21:17

I used to see my mum squidging herself into her 'natural' tights (which looked anything but) every morning and I swore I never, ever would wear them. To me, they look far more ageing than leggings - plus they're uncomfortable and sweaty and clingy

DD has a gorgeous 1950s red polka dot dress which she wears with navy cropped leggings and navy espadrille wedges and I swear it's the nicest outfit I've ever seen. Pffft to those who say leggings and dresses are frumpy! Grin

JingsAndCrivens · 16/05/2016 21:21

I like my bare legs, pale as they are!

FutureGadgetsLab · 16/05/2016 21:25

I think 1950s dresses are lovely but leggings with them seem like blasphemy!

motherinferior · 16/05/2016 21:29

I like bare legs but I am not wild about dresses up to my pants on me.

And it's too damn cold for bare legs this week!

JackandDiane · 16/05/2016 21:29

nonsense. I was in shorts all day

motherinferior · 16/05/2016 21:30

I'm forrin.

FutureGadgetsLab · 16/05/2016 21:31

To be fair it was too cold today. I had tights on.

motherinferior · 16/05/2016 21:34

I am quite probably going to wear leggings (churidar) and a TUNIC to my mother's funeral.Smile

She was forrin, too, mind. And would have said "darling, what a lovely kurta".

JingsAndCrivens · 16/05/2016 21:35

Well I was sick today so I lay on the couch in my knickers watching Lovejoy.

Good times.
