are dresses with black leggings unfashionable?

I'm tall and don't like my legs from the knee up, searched the Internet and can't find any dresses that are long enough, I don't suit skirts or maxi dresses so planning on getting through the summer wearing dresses with black leggings underneath. Is this terrible? Or ok? I wore this style throughout my pregnancy but could defiantly get away with it then.

Well I recently wore jersey dresses from Jaeger with ankle length leggings and trainers (when it was cold) but I wouldn't fancy that in the summer. I'm surprised you can't find any midi length dresses you like ( I've seen a few I like at " & other stories"). it's not a common recommendation but have you considered Etsy? There are loads of sellers who will make custom orders for you, and they include quite a range of styles too. I don't know your style but this one has loads of classic looks www.etsy.com/uk/shop/xiaolizi?ref=listing-shop2-all-items-count#items although a bit girly. There are much cooler designers if this is not your thing.

I'm glad I posted this thread, it's good to get different opinions. I had a look yesterday and only saw two or three mums wearing this look. They looked lovely, in my opinion.
I didn't really mean fashionable as I'm not concerned with trends etc, fashionable is not something I ever will be or was, I guess I meant is it a look that is on a par with shell suits.... And from this post I get that it is an acceptable look.
I'll try a couple of midi dresses, may even Attempt to take up one so its the right length.
Just waiting on a Zara delivery now.
Thank you for the links and suggestions, they have been considered.

I wear leggings, generally under short skirts, all the time. I'm not overweight but I'm very pair-shaped so I'm not keen on my thighs and I also get thigh rub a bit.
Tights, whilst technically lighter, feel horrendous in hot weather whereas I feel cool in leggings.
I don't feel remotely frumpy.

This morning I saw a young Mum wheeling infant in buggy. She was wearing a knee length, summery chambray skirt, a little bit flared with a summery shell top and cropped black leggings. She looked really fresh, cool, in both senses of the word, and quite edgy. But then, I'm a Crepey so may be a bit behind the times style wise. I thank heavens for leggings and quite a few of us on the Crepey thread like a dress with leggings. But we are Crepeys... Grin

motherinferior · 12/05/2016 14:45

I love me a legging under a silk or velvet frock.

Cremo · 12/05/2016 15:07

I often wear leggings, not necessarily black though , with a tunic dress or longer top. So comfortable and practical. If it's not fashionable I couldn't give a hoot and tbh I rarely go anywhere fashionable anyway.
It is an especially useful solution if you are Celtic colouring with lilac/ pinkish lnatural leg. Fake tan looks like a baked bean experiment btw. You would be most relieved I've covered up with a legging , frankly.Grin
I like the idea of your fresh lady with the pram Rosebag.Smile

Arf at baked bean analogy crem Grin

Fine. Blue/grey or coloured leggings look nice. I have denim jeggings I wear under my tunic/floaty top dress things. It's practical and comfy.

RedToothBrush · 12/05/2016 16:25

I think frumpy depends on your body shape and what you were it with unfortunately.

Some people can pull it off, some can't.

Wordsmith · 12/05/2016 16:25

I wouldn't care if they were fasbionable as long as they were comfy. But aren't they really hot in summer? I don't like exposing anything above mid-shin either, so I live in linen trousers from Next.

Improperlyhappy · 12/05/2016 16:27

It's supposed to be tres fashionable to wear leggings now - coz those vacuous kardashian-hadad model types have started wearing them. Apparently! x

ToastDemon · 12/05/2016 16:31

Wordsmith where I am at present is over 40 degrees and I still don't find them too hot.
It's also a place where you're meant to keep shoulders and knees covered so they are very handy in that regard as well.

Madz1982 · 12/05/2016 16:40

I'm tall and hate my upper thighs. I always wear dresses that go just below my knee. Joules do some great ones!

Pammie70 · 12/05/2016 16:41

I love dresses but for work I tend to wear leggings underneath as I work in a Pre-school - no child needs to see my size 16 bum!!!
Matalan do some nice colours, I have grey, burgundy, brown and blue ones.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 12/05/2016 16:51

My DD(17) likes this style and I like to see her in a dress sometimes.

I might try it myself a bit more often as I like the different patterns of summer dresses, especially something bright and flowery.

In fact we've been asked to wear brights to an upcoming funeral and I think I might go with this together with some new summer sandals (practical walking style ones) I think that will have to do! At least I have some kind of plan thanks to this thread.

I think the leggings are helpful for those not brave enough to go bare for summer.

OnTique · 12/05/2016 17:00

I like wearing this look too. I'm also tall and struggle to find dresses that are a decent length for me. Anyway I feel nicer in leggings and a dress/long top than displaying my lumpy knees and thighs to the world.

Judging from this thread it is a popular look for good reasons, and I'm applauding LSP's earlier post about the word 'frumpy'. Well said!

I like maxi dresses too and do wear them sometimes in the summer, but not for everyday wear. I do tend to feel a bit like a galleon in full sail in a maxi dress. Maybe this year I'll take the ones I have up a few inches. I'd like them above my ankle really. Floor length makes me think of evening wear.

leelu66 · 12/05/2016 17:01

I live in leggings and dresses, but I also have lovely soft tights that look better with some dresses. They are more woolly than opaque (iykwim) and very comfortable. Too warm for warm weather though, when leggings are better.

BonerSibary · 12/05/2016 17:09

Not fashiony but looks great when worn well, as is the case with near enough anything. Unpopular amongst a certain sort of S and B poster, but not a view shared by the general population.

LittleHouseOnTheShelf · 12/05/2016 17:16

if they are then practically every teacher at DS's school is unfashionable.

MrsGuyOfGisbo · 12/05/2016 17:18

Have never been fashionable or stylish, but if you like, it why not?

StickyProblem · 12/05/2016 17:18

I like dresses with leggings, I have terrible swollen/fat knees and even a knee length dress that occasionally rides up is not a good look on me. I agree with the PP who said try lighter colours for summer.

I was in the US one year at a conference and felt very self-conscious because it's just not something they do over there. Then I saw someone with a dress and leggings and thought "phew, it's not just me" - she turned out to be another Brit!

Thingiebob · 12/05/2016 17:22

There's so much snobbiness and nastiness on this board. If you want to wear a dress with leggings, do it. It will be fine.

Pedestriana · 12/05/2016 17:32

Frankly, I don't care what people think of what I'm wearing. My concerns are comfort, practicality and stopping me getting sunburned.

Today I wore a 3/4 length sleeve blouse with jeans (out in the sun during the middle of the day). I've not kept the blouse but put shorts on. I'll be nipping out later so will shove my clogs on.

Tomorrow I may wear a tie-dye wrap skirt with a vest top and some sort of shoulder covering.

I spent most of my pregnancy in dress/leggings combo. Not all black leggings - grey, maroon and navy worked well. I now have some tunic dresses that I wear with long-sleeved tops under, leggings and boots. I wear a poncho too sometimes.

ReadyPlayerOne · 12/05/2016 17:34

I wear dresses with leggings all the time. I'm fine about my legs, but in the summer my thighs rub if I don't wear leggings. So even maxi dresses have to be paired with leggings. I don't really feel I have any alternatives, unless anyone has any ideas?

mushroomsontoast · 12/05/2016 17:40

It's weird, I used to wear dresses with leggings all the time a couple of years ago but I've drifted to black tights now. I tried on an old tunic dress and leggings the other day but it felt weird so I think I'm gonna go for flesh coloured tights with dresses for now.

I thought it was because it seems a bit of a young and casual look and I feel too old for it now.
