are dresses with black leggings unfashionable?

I'm tall and don't like my legs from the knee up, searched the Internet and can't find any dresses that are long enough, I don't suit skirts or maxi dresses so planning on getting through the summer wearing dresses with black leggings underneath. Is this terrible? Or ok? I wore this style throughout my pregnancy but could defiantly get away with it then.

I don't care if it's frumpy, I'm a tall sort and need to go out knowing I'm not going to flash my knickers to all and sundry.

Tribblewithoutacause · 13/05/2016 17:45

Plus have you seen what passes for a dress these days?

I've seen knickers with more coverage than a lot of what I see in the shops.

NameChange30 · 13/05/2016 18:24

Tribble
Don't get me started on those "shorts" that show half the wearer's arse... The type that are so high cut you can see the crease between buttock and thigh.

Vaara · 13/05/2016 18:37

I don't mind my legs but I'll wear a summer dress with leggings if there's a chill in the air. It's a good transitional look for me, usually with ballet pumps.

I wore this the other day with darker grey leggings and a cardi. I thought it looked nice.

Hip length Tunics look great on leggings. Just doesn't look right when you wear a dress on top of your leggings. Why hide your 'beautiful' legs when You have a dress on. Be bold!

TheDowagerCuntess · 13/05/2016 18:55

plus black goes with every other colour.

There are lots of colours black doesn't go with.

MrsMushrooms · 13/05/2016 18:59

Went out in my normal get up of leggings & a dress and felt frumpy and off all day - need to stop coming into this thread!!

TheDowagerCuntess · 13/05/2016 19:04

If you like them, wear them.

I find it odd that people think they're such an integral part of a wardrobe - there are so many other options - but if they are to you, then wear them.

Vaara · 13/05/2016 19:05

Dress and leggings = warm and comfy, not frumpy and off!

YvaineStormhold · 13/05/2016 19:09

I get Falke leggings (which are more like footless tights) in navy and white to wear under dresses and tunics in summer.

They're a bit thinner than black leggings and very comfortable.

I don't really care whether they're fashionable, tbh. IMO, they're more fashionable than thread veins and age spots, so...

Floisme · 13/05/2016 19:44

Why hide your 'beautiful' legs when You have a dress on?
Because they would be fucking freezing.

I wear the Falke or Wolford footless tights with dresses too. It's just like wearing grey or navy opaques only I flash a bit of ankle.

BonerSibary · 13/05/2016 21:38

Mmm, I'm not sure where everyone lives that summer is too hot to wear leggings. I mean yes, sometimes. There are always a couple of scorching weeks. It was boiling last Sunday and Monday and I wouldn't have liked to wear them then. But most of the time in the UK it's like 18 degrees or something. Bit cool for a dress with bare legs or even harem pants and sandals!

Floisme · 13/05/2016 21:43

I went bare legged last week but summer's probably over now.

JackandDiane · 13/05/2016 22:34

it looks like the whole country is populated by spiders
this is NOT CHIC

charliethebear · 13/05/2016 23:42

I like leggings under shorter dresses, as long as they are ankle length. I wouldn't say they are high fashion but they are definitely acceptable and look nice. And tbh if you like it that's all that matters

NapQueen · 14/05/2016 00:01

I certainly don't have beautiful legs.

I'm off to the dogs next week and looking for a tunic/dress to pair with my black (shock!) Leggings if anyone can point me in the direction of any nice ones!

triathlon · 14/05/2016 01:20

For some (not all!) of us who aren't 21 and a size 10, leggings do look better than bare legs with a dress above the knee. Not necessarily black, but maybe taupe at just below knee length. The leggings will then go into the background and people will notice your nice tunic/dress/smile/sandals instead. Shorts are summery but less flattering (muffin top = not a good look) and I would look enormous in those floaty tapered trousers!

squoosh · 14/05/2016 02:02

I just can't imagine a pair of pins that look so bad that covering them with knee length taupe leggings is preferable!

TheDowagerCuntess · 14/05/2016 03:05

If a skirt is too short to wear with bare legs, it's too short to wear with leggings, surely.

You still see the exact shape of them with leggings on.

Vaara · 14/05/2016 07:59

That doesn't follow at all Dowager.

It might not be the shape that's the problem.

Mine are a lovely shape, but sometimes they are very pale, sometimes covered in bruises (from sport), sometimes they are cold and sometimes my dress is slightly too short and would reveal my mottled, cellulitey thighs when I sat down.

Pop a pair of leggings on in a contrasting colour and bobs your uncle.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 14/05/2016 08:04

My favourite leggings, do they suit me

TheDowagerCuntess · 14/05/2016 08:18

Grin You look fab-u-lous, Fanjo.

I still think if the skirt is too short for bare legs, it's too short, full-stop. If you're flashing thigh or arse, it doesn't matter much to the person getting the eyeful, whether it's flesh or legging. If the skirt's too short, it's too short.

I dunno, I just don't wear too short skirts at all, I guess. Having leggings on wouldn't make it more palatable to the viewer in my mind.

Tribblewithoutacause · 14/05/2016 08:24

Varra I think that sounds like a lovely outfit, and I think I may have to buy one of those shirt dresses.

YorkieDorkie · 14/05/2016 08:30

I would think you'll be so warm when summer actually arrives! I don't think it would look unfashionable though, especially for around the house/mumming. Monsoon have lots of 'midi' dresses which might help?

Vaara · 14/05/2016 08:35

They're brilliant Tribble, really comfortable. They do it in navy with a grey stripe which is also very easy to wear. Look for the 20% off codes.
