I apologise for posting a link to a bitchy DM article, but it's a slow work day. And they must be freezing!

It makes them feel validated.

It's sad.

Kummerspeck · 09/04/2016 00:36

The Daily Mail is vile and so are some of the views posted on this thread. Some of you need to think how you would feel if your daughter went to an event and a deliberately bad snap of her elicited these nasty comments. Shame on those of you who have posted such misogynistic bile

WhatamessIgotinto · 09/04/2016 06:49

they are the friendliest people and create a lovely atmosphere. unfortunately Murphy this doesn't seem to be important to some on this thread. Who cares if these people are actually, you know, nice people, if they're wearing a dress made from cheap fabric eh? Apparently that makes them great fodder for some sneery, bitchy comments.

Some of the comments on this thread are fucking shameful.

BlenheimBouquet · 09/04/2016 08:02

This thread is another example of The Changing Face of Mumsnet

Plenty of examples here of commenting from nasty, unthinking, lowest common denominator posters. It used to be that MN would give you food for thought, posters who had interesting takes on topics, alternative views and a rich seam of experience to draw on.

Frequently now its like reading the comments section of MailOnline.

There are a lot of posters here who should be pretty ashamed of themselves.

WhatamessIgotinto · 09/04/2016 08:04

Couldn't agree more Bouquet, it's thoroughly depressing.

MaybeDoctor · 09/04/2016 08:40

On the other hand, I have seen the same kind of sneering towards those who might dare to wear a fleece and 'gasp' mumboots when visiting London. I thought it was extremely bitchy and said as much on a Style and Beauty thread - it didn't go down well...

MaybeDoctor · 09/04/2016 08:46

The only thing I would note is that it has ever been thus - the establishment mocking the 'dressed up' working classes.

Remember the attitude towards Mrs Bast in Howards End?
Isn't William Powell Frith's 'Derby Day' the equivalent of that article rendered in oils?

Empressa · 09/04/2016 08:50

It's all bitchy maybe.

However the fleece-and-mumboots wearers are not likely to see themselves being discussed. This Aintree stuff gets all over the Internet.

Empressa · 09/04/2016 08:51

Sorry not maybe but Maybe

Snoopydo · 09/04/2016 08:58

I read the style and beauty board a lot and the general attitude is, wear what you like. Posters are often tolerant and accepting of other people's tastes. That's one reason why I have been so shocked at the judgemental comments on this thread. Fortunately the balance is changing in more recent posts.

As an antidote here's the Guardian's gallery. Love the stable girls sending it all up.

RudeElf · 09/04/2016 10:22

Oh mrskeats fab photos! Emily eaton's outfit (red dress and tweed fitted blazer) was perfect imo. I love it. And how fantastic was the horse dress? Brilliant.

blodynmawr · 09/04/2016 11:02

It entirely suits the right wing establishment editorial policy of the DM to portray women, particularly northern women, in a sneery way and I am saddened that people get sucked into the same lowest common denominator mindset.
All the women looked amazing and clearly had a great time, whatever they wore and regardless of which background they came from.

Liverpool is a fantastic city full of witty, genuine people. It gave us the greatest cultural influence of the 20th Century, the Beatles, and one of the greatest ever female MPs, Bessie Braddock. Not to mention all its other great alumni. What exactly is there not to like?

Mrskeats · 09/04/2016 11:52

Thanks rudeelf
We were in Liverpool Thursday and the excitement was palpable
Lots of businesses do very well when the races are on and it was buzzing
Feeling better that some are in agreement with my point of view.
I totally agree blod. It's a great city

whattheseithakasmean · 09/04/2016 13:50

The Guardian gallery had some lovely photographs and just seemed so much more respectful and affectionate towards the subjects. The Daily Mail photographed them like objects, the Guardian captured warmth & humanity.

GrumpyOldBag · 09/04/2016 14:14

Telegraph gallery, a lot of the same pics as Guardian.

Disgusting article and some downright nasty comments on this thread.

Those of you having a good bitch about the fat, offensive, tasteless chavs with corned beef legs should post some photos of yourself on here for a critique. I bet you ain't all that yourselves. I hope none of you have daughters.

bojorojo · 09/04/2016 16:20

I am a very regular race goer and I was at Aintree on Thursday. A few misconceptions on this thread should be challenged. There is no dress code in the less expensive areas of the course. People can wear what they want and they do. The temperature on Thursday was about 9 degrees but felt more like 5 degrees. I saw countless women without coats or any cover up at all. I do fail to see what is smart about this but they are not obliged to wear a jacket. Many girls and women had bare legs. Some of the fake tans were poorly done but if they don't care, then that's fine.

Some of the shoes worn are towering. Hard work but lots of them get taken off. In the less expensive areas I saw Chanel bags. They were not fake. People may be working class, but there was some serious money on show. I also saw a woman in a gold, long, sequinned evening dress. I cannot understand why anyone would wear this to a horse racing event. However, for many, Horses have nothing to do with their day out. People do not watch the racing, have no idea which horses are running in what. If people want to pay huge sums to sit in a bar and get drunk, they can.

Sadly racecourses only have themselves to blame by handing out prizes to women who look like they are going to a wedding in June or Royal Ascot. On a cold day, it is easy to wear a smart coat and a less extravagant hat with lower heeled shoes. The smarter Liverpool girls had done just this but they didn't get photographed.

We are definitely going again next year. Fortunately, the racing is brilliant with some of the very best horses taking part. I don't really care what people look like but it is easy to look smart at Aintree by wearing a coat then there are no worries over larger sizes, fake tans, boobs hanging out, extra short skirts or any other fashion problems. I think it is a shame that there is a "fashion" pantomime going on that detracts from the real stars - the amazing horses.

hairymuffet · 09/04/2016 18:56

What a mess!!

Empressa · 09/04/2016 21:13

What's a mess?

leccybill · 10/04/2016 00:37

Re lady in the horse print dress - it was made to measure by a seamstress local to me, from a pair of curtains found in a charity shop. I thought it was great.

I thought the DM's comments about today, the final day of the event were a little more toned down. I'd like to think they have heeded the backlash but I won't hold my breath.

Scouse girls have one thing in spades and that's pride. What a weekend for the city. If you've never been - do go. Fabulous place.
