Remember Body shop ice blue shampoo and animal soaps, body and face place pineapple lip balm. Explanation perfume, Charlie red, youth dew?? What are your fave beauty products from days of old?

Does anyone remember the clip on bows that went on the front of your shoes?

whattheseithakasmean · 21/01/2016 21:35

The Miss Selfridge perfume was called Soft Talk, I thought it was lovely. I have nodded along to so much of this - Linco Beer shampoo, Heather Shimmer & Iron Lady lipstick, Aqua Manda, banana shampoo, Studio Line mousse.

Does anyone else remember UV hair gel that glowed in UV light, and wet look hair gel - for crisp greasy looking hair that glowed in the dark!

I remember living in Edinburgh & walking through the New Town & the stench of the office girls who'd headed into work that morning lingered - Poison & Obsession quivering over the cobbled streets, so evocative.

Yes and I had a Fergie bow in my hair too!

FrancesHB · 21/01/2016 22:00

Natrel deodorant had an advert which was models covered in camouflage body paint leaning against trees, in a jungle.

What about those banana hair clip thingummies. They made your hair look horrible.

Posh hair mascara made a comeback in the early-mid 90s - Estee Lauder or similar.

Tate15 · 21/01/2016 22:07

I can't find a picture on the internet but I'm pretty sure it was Almay, loose face powder with a normal translucent finish or one with sparkle in it. I don't think they came in a box but they were in round pale pink pots with a clear plastic insert to shake the powder out.

I used to buy it from a chemist but then they stopped making it. I loved it, it was around in the 1980s, probably mid eighties.

Devora · 21/01/2016 22:22

We all wanted ringlets in the early 80s. I had to have mine permed in, and then wore a scarf wrapped round my head. What was it with scarves wrapped round heads? - I did it for years.

CraftyMissus · 21/01/2016 22:30

Impulse Red or Dead

Miss Selfridges Explosion Perfume (my dad said it smelled like a Spanish brothel!)

Hair mascara and hair spins that usually wouldn't spin...

Clear mascara so school couldn't tell you were wearing any.

Tangerine shampoo and conditioner from the Body shop, came in a little hamper with a matching soap.

And I remember having a crayon... Think it was revlon. Supposed to be for eyes, lips and cheeks. Mine was lilac with lots of glitter and I applied it generously with no idea that it meant use it anywhere but not everywhere. Lilac sparkly eyes cheeks and lips all on the same face I must have looked amaaaazing haha

Fizrim · 21/01/2016 22:34

I was surprised to see banana hairclips in a shop the other day, I think they are on their way back!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 22/01/2016 19:22

Yardley ESP mascara was the best I have ever used (I forgave them their various lavender products for the mascara)

I had a Trip Down Memory Lane t'other day. In Tesco there were some Barbara Daly gift sets (I'd bought concealer for DD and eye primer for myself a while ago)

These gift sets were reduced (I think about £5ish).
Nail polish (red) mascara (can't have too many) highlighter in a snazzy gold tube, and Face Lift. Scarily peach looking moisture/primer.
Applied today and it's lovely.

Barbara Daly used to do a make-up range for Body shop and I'm sure I read that she did Princess Diana's wedding make-up.
(And my own make-up was BD for my wedding but I did it myself Smile )

Ahhhhhhh memories of lipstick No6 that was a MMBB, I've bought it recently, not quite the same Sad

CraftyMissus · 22/01/2016 19:53

Used to buy a shampoo and conditioner called MyMy... Ginger. It smelt really strong and I thought it was amazing until the girls at school told me it smelt of Lynx!

MissAlabamaWhitman · 22/01/2016 22:03

Tobacco flower perfume from the body shop.

Japonica natural collection hair serum from boots, tinted red berry lip balm from boots NC also.

Cucumber facial range (cleanse tone and moisturise) from boots.

Sun in (dramatic look) that turned my hair white!

Laval secret beauty foundation from the market stall in 1999/2000.

My first proper perfume was beautiful. I only discovered poison in 2009 but I wear it almost daily. My friends think it's unusual, their mums tell me I reek like a tart Grin

MissBattleaxe · 22/01/2016 22:05

MissAlabama- I like your style! Poison is not everyone's cuppa but its an 80s powerhouse classic.

MissAlabamaWhitman · 22/01/2016 22:17

Thank you MissB .

I will try to do it justice Wink

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 23/01/2016 08:41

I bloody love Poison. I quite like the idea of the Spanish Brothel perfume as well....

In honour of you lot I bought a vintage bottle of Fidji yesterday. (MissBattleaxe, from German ebay, hopefully not a dud, the box looks all battered and the seller only has a few perfumes on sale, so I think it's OK, not like the well dodgy stuff I copped for from Lithuania last year!)

Almay seemed to belong to the Revlon studio as at our local MacArthur Glen outlet there was a Revlon shop which did Charlie/Revlon/Almay stuff right up to about 5 yrs ago. Sadly not the beloved matte Rachel foundation I used to use.

Notonaschoolnight · 23/01/2016 10:58

Byzance
BS Samarkand
CK Eternity
Samsara
Magie noire
Paloma Picasso
Clinique aromatics

I was no older than 16 when I wore those so looking back I've always loved perfume and have never done subtle, 25 years on and I still love my chypres and florientals but more modern variations, what are the perfume notes that make perfumes of that time, smell old fashioned now?

Really would like to have a sniff of them all right now

sarah2011 · 23/01/2016 14:00

In honour of this thread I am wearing tribe perfume that Mr postie delivered this morning. I smell a bit like a bag of pick and mix....

MissBattleaxe · 23/01/2016 17:49

Notonaschoolnight- you had great taste! I think perfumes are dated by the dominant notes of their time.
70s perfumes were chypres and aldehydes ( Panache, Tweed, Blase), 80s were more oriental and BIG (Poison, Obsession, Giorgio) 90s were more muted and simple (Issey Miyake, Eternity) and the Twenteens i.e 2010 to current are very fruity flroal/candy floss and caramel. I long for mossy chypres!

IPokeBadgers · 23/01/2016 17:59

Is now the time to admit I still own rimmel heather shimmer and coffee shimmer lipsticks??!

afghanda · 23/01/2016 18:29

Boots had another range like the natural collection too - was it called the Global collection or something? It had a particularly amazing turkish delight lipbalm and two tone bath oil in a bottle that you shook so that the two colours mixed.

warmfuzzyfeeling · 25/01/2016 17:28

I still have a small bottle about a third full of Body Shop Mostly Musk which they discontinued years ago. It sells for a fortune on eBay now. It smells amazing and on the rare occasions I treat myself to a dab DH gets a bit, um, touchy feely.
I've got some Fuzzy Peach too.

But the thing I love most is my nearly empty bottle of Cosmetics To Go Smaragadine body lotion. It's concentrated over the years and become a rich golden colour. And the smell.... oh my god.

niminypiminy · 25/01/2016 18:00

I've just been given a bottle of Body Shop White Musk for my birthday. Now wondering whether the friend who gave it to me is also in this thread...

Lndnmummy · 25/01/2016 18:31

Aww the exclamation and benneton perfumes, I used to spray it after smoking in the bushes!! Dito dewberry and white musk.

Aww memories

rollonthesummer · 25/01/2016 18:35

If the Body Shop are ever struggling, all they need to do is bring back some of their old stuff-we'd all be back there like a shot for some nostalgia kicks!!

itchychin · 25/01/2016 18:43

Someone mentioned these earlier... (great name, can't think why they are no longer around...)

Old school products -trip down memory lane
MissBattleaxe · 25/01/2016 18:49

rollonthesummer- I know! They said they have no plans to bring back The perfume bar. TBH I think they've ruined the Body Shop. It's overpriced and boring these days, with a couple of nice perfumes maybe. They've lost their USP and they're not listening to customers.
