Hoping link to previous thread works!

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/style_and_beauty/2320549-Ashamed-of-my-beauty-product-hoard?pg=1

Continuation of the thread where I realised I was not alone in my hoarding of all things make-up/beauty/skincare/toiletries.

Lots of lovely mumsnetters who encourage each other to use and enjoy all those lovely products, and at the same time try to reduce our spending on unnecessaries!

The stocktake was a real eye opener for me. I had tens of body moisturisers, maybe nine or so hand creams (I've tried to wipe the memory) and soo many shower gels. I also had masses of more boring things like shampoo, toothpaste and soap. But it was necessary, I think. And it helped me stay on the straight and narrow for a while. I used to carry it round in my purse and whenever I was tempted to buy anything at all, I would get it out. It really helped! Of course, I hVe lapsed a few times (3 for 2 at boots is too much, too much)

WellTidy · 10/05/2016 22:00

Hood hot to report my empty in all that reminiscing. Miniature
L'occitan delightful rose hand cream. Will definitely repurchase when I've got through my five remaining hand creams.

CheshireChat · 10/05/2016 22:30

That's the problem I have as well Kwick, I have lots of lipsticks and lip glosses and the vast majority are the same! I have a peel off gloss, lip tint, lipstick and matte lip gloss all the same shade! It's handy when you want to layer on a night out, but when I have 5 minutes before DS starts taking the living room apart? Not so much.

FiveShelties · 10/05/2016 22:49

Thanks Kwick - I must admit that when I did the dreaded sort out of all my stuff, the lipsticks were almost all the same colour! I am going to pick three tomorrow - all different shades and have a complete change. Of course I have to have three because Boots will almost certainly have a 3 for 2 Offer on!

My name is FiveShelties and I still cannot resist a 3 for 2! Grin

ohhhmylegs · 11/05/2016 03:35

Ememem, I think I'm gonna have to..might very well be the final nail in the coffin.
Get terribly carried away with new products. So far have spent £140 just in body shop alone in 4 weeks. Blush
Cancelled beauty subscriptions so far.
Major guilt trip.
Oh Dear. Hmm

Kwick709 · 11/05/2016 05:20

Welcome ohhh!

Ememem84 · 11/05/2016 06:20

Ah the 3 for 2. I can't resist either.

I look at it though like it's ok. I mean shampoos not going to go off is it...it won't be wasted...

Kwick709 · 11/05/2016 08:35

I have just resisted having a major blow-out in this ace (and inexpensive) store called HEMA which I found at Stansted airport... They sell online....

IPokeBadgers · 11/05/2016 08:48

Welcome ohmylegs - always good to have another person contributing to the thread....it was pulling all my toiletries and cosmetics out of various cupboards and drawers that made me realise just how much I had stockpiled...it was quite a shock seeng the hoard in its entirety.

Funnily enough, I also did it when DH wasn't around to see my shame! Smile

But it was a valuable exercise: over the past year I have massively reduced my random spending on unnecessary stuff, and have realised that I no longer need 6 spare bottles of shampoo taking up space in the cupboard.

I still splurge occasionally, and I am realistic to know that I will probably never finish my numerous eyeshadow palettes, but I am so much better than I was in terms of this [for me] mindless spending....

CheshireChat - I am glad it is not just me who has found out that nearly all my lipsticks are practically the same. I recently gathered all lip products in a bag and swatched all the lipsticks on my skin, and was miffed to see just how similar they were. I have obviously discovered my comfort zone where lip colour is concerned: generally in the plummy pink to bare spectrum. I did buy a couple of brighter lippies recently [in my last disastrous i.e. expensive trip to Boots] but struggling to wear them as they just seem too bright on me.

Welcome all. Feeling very virtuous today.

I resisted buying the No 7 fantastic sounding serum in Boots yesterday despite it being part of their 3 for 2, and it being relatively cheap for what sounded like an excellent serum. I remembered that I have a total of about 100 ml (including miniatures) of Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair in my stash, and I'm not getting through that even, as I forget last thing at night.

And also I have a £100 Debenhams voucher and I was passing the bare minerals counter and saw their lovely quads. And there were three that I absolutely loved. And I thought that if I buy these three, out of my voucher (so I wouldn't be spending actual money, you see), I could get rid of every eyeshadow pallet, duo and single at home and just have these. And I had almost convinced myself. But I have masses of eyeshadow at home, I don't know if I will need to buy eyeshadow for ten years, and I wear it everyday.

So I walked away!

IPokeBadgers · 11/05/2016 11:10

Ah, well done to the virtuous WellTidy - it's a good feeling not to have spent impulsively on things....but I am going to play devil's advocate....pray tell, what do you think you will spend your voucher on if not make-up and lovely toiletries? Grin

If I'm honest, I think you should consider buying ONE of the quads if there is a way to choose one that you really love and that doesn't double up too much on what you already have. Buy it, mindfully use it and really take pleasure in owning it and enjoying it. Gift vouchers and cards are meant to be a treat after all....

In the grand scheme of things, one thing I have found helps with delayed gratification is actively telling myself that we live in a country with easy access to material goods etc....there are no real shortages....so the world will not end if I don't buy that eyeshadow today, it will [more than likely] still be there tomorrow or next week if I need/really want it...

I only have bright blood red ones! For me it's THE shade- dark red with strong blue undertones that match my cool, veeery pale skin. But I'd like a bit of variety...

StewardsEnquiry · 11/05/2016 13:02

I have to confess to a bit of a splurge yesterday. I needed a new mascara (really - I didn't have a back up and my current one was getting a bit dried up) so I went to the Chanel counter. I am on my third rebuy of Chanel mascara, I do rate it. So I bought the mascara, and a quad eyeshadow managed to make its way into my basket too.

Not too disastrous I suppose. The freebie was a little sampler of four lipsticks with a brush, which I enjoyed trying on this morning. But they are now in the bin because there is no way to reseal the samples so they are impossible to take out and about.

CheshireChat · 11/05/2016 15:52

Finished a nail drying spray today- I don't think it actually helps dry my nails any faster so I doubt I'll be rebuying this.

littlepooch · 11/05/2016 16:31

Can I join? Been lurking on this thread for ages. I went through and sorted out all my boxes of stuff so can start in earnest this morning. So. Much. Stuff.

Anyway this week so far I have finished a Body Shope body scrub (won't repurchase), Aveeno body lotion (my staple but I have a few other bottles of other brands to get through before I can repurchase) and a soap and glory hand cream which I hated the scent of so a relieved it's gone!!

I have quite a lot of make up which I just don't like - don't whether to just bin it or try to force myself to wear it somehow!!

FrustratedFrugal · 11/05/2016 17:35

Welcome Littlepooch!

I tend to repurpose and downgrade products that I don't like. But if the colors don't suit you at all, bin them. Life's too short

I've started really liking some of the products that I am using up. The eye quad that I am trying to finish, for example. I think I look a lot more awake when I am wearing it. I found one more lipstick that is a few weeks from gone. That would be the fourth one I am finishing in a year's time!

WellTidy · 11/05/2016 19:49

Little, Just to get through things, I've used eye creams on my neck and chest, and hand creams on my lizard legs and feet. It seemed more acceptable somehow to me to follow that than to chuck it. With make up, I gave away to my lovely cleaner the things that I didn't like that were brand new and I did chuck the rest. I still have a large make up stash, but it is of colours that suit me.

littlepooch · 11/05/2016 19:54

Yes I think I will sort through make up and anything new or virtually new I will give away. Anything really old and which I don't like will be binned I think. At least then I can see what I have and make use of it!

MinnieF1 · 11/05/2016 20:30

I too have a variety of lipsticks which are all very similar! I recently halved my stash by throwing away the ones which didn't last throughout the day.

Does anyone else find themselves holding onto rubbish products/things that don't suit them, just because they cost a fortune?

Ememem84 · 11/05/2016 21:52

So. I went into feel unique today. (We have a store here that's where it's based). And I saw. This.

Desperately want this. Look how beautiful it is.

Just sayin

WellTidy · 11/05/2016 22:27

I saw this in Debenhams yesterday and was tempted to spend my voucher on it! It is indeed beautiful. Mmmmm.

CheshireChat · 12/05/2016 00:09

It's absolutely gorgeous and I'd love it! Also, I recently saw it being sold on EBay for £75!!

IPokeBadgers · 12/05/2016 09:23

Oh that Alice in Wonderland palette is a thing of beauty isn't it! That's the problem with the really pretty palettes, I wouldn't bring myself to use them....would just take it out and look at it/stroke it occasionally. Grin

littlepooch · 12/05/2016 09:35

Gorgeous palette. I confess I have some limited edition Mac stuff which I can't bring myself to use, I just keep them and look at the, every so often Blush

I've just seen that the Estée Lauder are doing a gift with purchase. I will be running out of my advanced night repair and eye serum in a few weeks so can't decide to just wait until they've completely run out or just buy them now to get the gift (which apart from the make up is stuff I use and would be useful for my upcoming holiday)...
