moresnow

I hadn't worn any lipstick but nearly nude for years. I am OK with the burgundy and am getting used to them. You do need a "full face" of makeup - I'm trying to find a chubby stick or tinted lip balm for days when I'm not wearing much other makeup, else I look too pale.

I tried the HOC "carmine" red when I went into town shopping at the weekend, it's way too vampy for work. By the end of the day it had grown on me TBH. With my new HOC approved gamine coat I felt a lot more put together than I normally do.

So I would say yes the lipstick is worth a try.

I do find dark lipsticks a bit high maintenance, should I be using a special primer or something as they quickly wear off leaving an obvious 'rim' which looks worse than no lipstick at all.

The colour of the boots look good to me.

Re lipsticks - it does take time, try staining your lips if you are struggling.

With winters, our colouring has a lot of contrast (unlike the more muted seasons) and lipsticks are part of ensuring that there is enough contrast in the way we look.

If you google pics of winters such as Anne Hathaway you can see how much difference wearing lipstick makes to the way she looks.

didireallysaythat · 08/01/2015 23:11

More I love the boots but I'm not qualified to talk about colours (but the red ones reminded me of Santa Claus).

Sorrel I think my quest for the killer lipstick might be a life time mission. I've certainly bought some recently that are outside my comfort zone. I wish manufacturers would describe the colour in terns of RGB values - what colour do you think holiday beach is ???

Compliments - giving this some more thought I realise that someone at my Pilates class has complimented me twice about looking glamorous and I'd forgotten ! Once when I'd just painted my nails dark purple and last week when I turned up in scary red lipstick. So maybe I'm not failing this .. !

NeitherHereOrThere · 09/01/2015 09:08

Lipsticks again - I don't wear a full face of make up, in fact the stronger my lipstick, the less make up I tend to wear (e,g just eyeliner and mascara).

NeitherHereOrThere · 09/01/2015 09:09

(and being pale is good)

QueenCardigan · 09/01/2015 09:29

I only wear powder, blusher and mascara with my pink lipsticks.

I do like a red lipstick but find it does look quite full on in the day. I'm finding it a bit harder to wear lipstick since leaving my job but the chubby sticks are a good compromise. Our school gate is very casual as are most of my friends so i find I feel quite over-dressed if I wear a strong lipstick.

I just got this fuschia jumper which is a pretty exact match for number 16 on the swatch (although it doesn't look it in the photo). I would never have bought this before having my colours done.

I've had a few compliments, particularly wearing a dark green top with a chunky silver necklace, but nothing recently.

Boden cable jumper was too chunky, I've swapped for an XS as it was incredibly cosy but think maybe the shape is just wrong.

Stokey · 09/01/2015 13:47

MoreSnow there's a good Lisa eldridge video on wearing red listick. I can't remember exactly what she does but one thing is going over your lips first with a cotton bud and some vaseline to even out the chapped bits. And she uses a lip pencil and a lip brush to gradually build up the colour.

I don't have any lip stains but do find using a lip brush makes lipstick more subtle.

NeitherHereOrThere · 09/01/2015 14:22

To stain your lips with normal lipsticks, apply lipstick after prepping your lips then use a tissue to blot and then use a lip pencil to go round the edges to make your lips look neat.

Think you need to go through your wardrobe, remove all non winter coloured items and then identify any gaps e.g long sleeved tops, blouses/shirts, trousers, jeans, jumpers/cardigans, dresses, t-shirts, skirts, shoes, boots and jackets/coats.

A staple wardrobe will depend on your lifestyle and preferences e.g job, social life, location (e.g town or country), hobbies/interests and so on.

SorrelForbes · 09/01/2015 18:14

Evening all. I'm just back from a chilly few days in the Canaries and thought I'd better update on my sale purchases I linked to up thread.

Jigsaw:
Boyfriend jeans - good fit and nice and dark so smart enough for my style rules.
Blue jumper - feels like polyester and looked cheap and casual. Going back.
Sequined skirt - lovely fit and feel. A definite keeper. Annoying that I probably won't get to wear it for a while.

All Saints dress - very nice indeed. Quite short even on me but will be ideal for holidays with silver jewellery and sandals.

Collectif green velvet dress - thin and clingy yet bulky on the bust. Looked and felt cheap. Going back.

mimiasovitch · 09/01/2015 20:22

I do get compliments occasionally, but not tons, and they are more along the lines of 'lovely colour on you' rather than 'you look groomed'. I do get told I look far too smart for work though - I work in a restaurant, and whilst most of the staff are head to toe in black I wear whatever I want, which tends to be colourful. I now cannot believe I went so long without lipstick as a staple. I hardly use eye shadow at all now, and am a big fan of a bit of eye liner and mascara with bold lips for all occasions. I am loving the Maybelline 24 hour colour. Cherry is a gorgeous red (even my anti make-up brother likes it on me), and I've just acquired raspberry, which is a lovely deep pink. Excellent staying power too.

My dh, who is still stubbornly refusing to believe in the magic of colour, and thinks I look good in everything, has been swayed by a charcoal sweater. Deep scoop neck, very fine cashmere knit, £10 on ebay! It's a very hard shape to find, especially in pure wool, but I've just bought 2 from Hobbs - this one, and the same in blue, which I think has been linked to before. Hopefully they are appropriately winter. I did see some similar on the Artegiano website, out of stock in every colour. Shame, as there was a lovely burgundy. If anyone knows of any anywhere please share. I need warmth, not cotton or viscose, and they have to be fitted.

I also had some bargains in TK Maxx. A black deep cowl neck jumper, and a black waterfall cardi, for the princely sum of £16. I intended to wear the cardi over my pjs, but I've found that over a dress, belted with an obi belt, it looks nicely fitted and suitably romantic.

mimiasovitch · 09/01/2015 20:27

Sorrel - shame about the collectif dress, but at least the sequinned skirt is a keeper. I so want one - to wear where I don't know!

Moresnow - I love the colour on those boots. I think they're meant to be really comfy too. (Can you tell I'm on my feet all day? I never used to consider comfort in shoes. I feel so old!).

QueenCardigan · 09/01/2015 21:01

moresnow I think that's the soft burgundy and was one of the ones recommended to me although I never bought it.

I often just use my finger to dab the lipstick on as a stain although it doesn't last very long.

The Estee Lauder colour Envy lipsticks have great staying power.

MrPop · 10/01/2015 14:34

MoreSnow I am pretty similar to you wrt lipsticks. I think you said your consultant suggested you had aspects of a natural clothing personality and I think I do too. Can't see how full lipstick works in that context though I do love the look on others

I also have the 50 from HOC - I do like the colour and it doesn't look too full on but agree it is drying. It is the only HOC lipstick (I bought 3) that I wear semi regularly.

I find chubby sticks and revlon lip butters best for me as they are not so 'done' but they do need a lot of re application.

I also like Mac plumful which feels quite moisturising and looks quite natural.

Has anyone tried the Nars sticks (not sure what they are called).

I'm wondering about burt bees lipblam but might not be bright enough colours.

NowhereNow · 10/01/2015 19:05

The soft burgundy is my only HOC lipstick but I don't wear it much. Today I'm wearing revlon red velvet.

I picked up a few long vests in H&M earlier - they are brilliant for wearing under other tops. I got navy/indigo, dark green (like 29), red (close match to 23) and blue (a darker version of 10).

fooogle · 10/01/2015 19:30

mrpop I've got a nars matt stick in cruella.., good staying power though it's a bit drying just as it's matt. I thought it'd be my perfect red but it seems too go more pink for me...
I've got a Korres balm which is kind of like a stain? Wild rose I think it is? Pinky burgundy.
Am practicing charcoal tops, dark jeans and red lips mostly at the mo, mascara and slightly lined upper lids. Sometimes I alarm myself in the mirror Grin

I don't remember eyeshadows being discussed - lipsticks were the main focus when it came to talking about make up.

Taupe, grey and of some the ice colours e.g lavender are supposed to be good for winters.

MrPop · 11/01/2015 09:36

Our lipstick chat has given me a yen for red lipstick again

Thinking of either
-collection 2000 prohibition
-Mac russian red

Any advice on either? Thanks!

MoreSnow i will dig out my info from HoC but think it will probably be similar to Neither. I don't wear eyeshadow atm still getting to grips with lipstick

Fooogle as usual I love the sound of your look - sounds very stylish. Why do you scare yourself?? Is it just a big departure?
