Hello....not a stealth boast, more of a quick, help me not look like a chav....

A friend of mine is in handbag shop right now. He's just text me saying would I prefer a "Chanel Quilted Caviar leather Flap bag" in black, red, white or gold.

What do I have? Discounted red as I have a red Lulu Guiness clutch. Is white chavtastic? Do I go classic black, or nudey gold? Both I have loads to match, outfit wise. Help quickly please!!!! What's best?

Googled them...I presume it's the small one. He doesn't know me that well to spend loads.

TIA!!! x x x

Poor you. Thinking someone wanting to put a smile on someone's face is taking them for a ride.

My gits of friends freeloading off me. Especially that one poncing a whole spa day off me. Bastards taking me for a ride.

And as an incredibly wealthy man, I imagine he's losing hours of sleep over the equivalent of you spending 50p.

phew, that was a lucky escape, thank FUCK for this thread...

Oh, yes, and:

"Wit; noun - 1. the capacity for inventive thought and quick understanding; keen intelligence.

  1. a natural aptitude for using words and ideas in a quick and inventive way to create humour."

HTH.

Nigella I did think about resale s well to be honest. Chanel's never been my thing....smacks all too much of "look at my logo" naffness.

They are nice, though, not my first choice. I'll certainly keep them for a bit...if they ever materialise next week Grin

Presumably you've known your 'best' friend longer than 9 days (maybe a month?)

SugarHut · 08/01/2014 15:55

This is true. We must not and shall not do anything nice for someone who we have known for less than a decade...shit, too long? Yes, too long. 6 weeks?....not long enough?....Let's go for 6 months. Agreed everyone? We must be miserable, judgy (but absolutely not, do you hear me NOT jealous) of anyone giving you a gift unexpectedly...unless you have known them at least six months. Unless of course, the motive is to buy their way into your pants. And there must be a suspicious motive. Allllways a motive.

Glad we've cleared that up.

As you were...

He wants in your knickers - rich people don't tend to be rich because they make stupid financial decisions. He is investing in you for a reason, and you don't come across as that naive so I think you know that. Whatever you have said to him, I strongly suspect he hopes to win you round with lovely things. Would he come on as strong if there was a boyfriend? I doubt it.

If you really live in la-la happy land where wonderful rich benefactors buy pretty girls luxury goods and expect absolutely nothing in return then I really hope it all works out for you and it doesn't turn nasty one day.

cardamomginger · 08/01/2014 16:05

Sorry - but I just can't resist:

OP - you should have got him to buy a bench (or several hundred) instead!

AmberNectarine · 08/01/2014 16:10

Ooh yeah, a gold plated, diamond studded bench.

cardamomginger · 08/01/2014 16:28

Don't understand why no one made the joke before Grin.

hiphipreplacement · 08/01/2014 16:31

I don't get it! What's the bench thing?!

Dontletthemgetyoudown · 08/01/2014 16:37

God mumsnet is so snippy these days.

I'm not sure who started the nastiness but Amber is coming across as really bitchy.

Each to their own I say. I fully understand the op not wanting to disclose her profession and personal details.

The bench thing was from a thread ages ago where the OP had inherited a sum of money from a very dear and very stylish friend with the express instructions that it was to be spent on something for herself. She decided to remember the friend by spending the money on a handbag. I think she had in the region of £1000 and was asking for ideas.

It was all going swimmingly, with suggestions for gorgeous bags flying in left, right and centre. And then someone said that they thought it was shocking that such a large sum of money was going on something so frivolous and that the OP would be better off buying a cheap handbag from Primark (or similar) and spending the rest on a memorial bench Much more Sensible.

The thread got quite exciting from that point onwards with an off-shoot discussion about the economics of fashion and how cheap ethical fashion is really not possible and that, e.g. Hermes and Bottega Veneta have excellent working conditions, pensions etc for their highly trained craftsmen and women, and use high quality materials to produce items that last, ratehr than beign disposable, and that this comes at a price.

It was good fun. Of sorts. I can't remember what the OP bought in the end. But it was not a bench. Far too heavy to be practical and your keys and lippy just fall through the slats.

MissBeehiving · 08/01/2014 16:48

Oh, I agree that Sugar is absolutely not naïve, she knows the score on this. It's being done for the "hope" value. A true friendship is not based on gift giving, nor can a true depth of friendship accrue after 9 days.

Sugar you might need to pretend it's something pure and innocent for your own self respect but the truth is absolutely glaringly obvious.

cardamomginger · 08/01/2014 16:48

Sugarhut - not suggesting that YOU should have requested a bench. Hope you don't mind the joke Smile.

I think you have made the right choices re colour and size.

AmberNectarine · 08/01/2014 16:48

I think she bought a Bayswater IIRC...

MissBeehiving · 08/01/2014 16:49

MN has always been snippy Confused

AmberNectarine · 08/01/2014 16:50

HelloBoys · 08/01/2014 17:11
