Hello....not a stealth boast, more of a quick, help me not look like a chav....

A friend of mine is in handbag shop right now. He's just text me saying would I prefer a "Chanel Quilted Caviar leather Flap bag" in black, red, white or gold.

What do I have? Discounted red as I have a red Lulu Guiness clutch. Is white chavtastic? Do I go classic black, or nudey gold? Both I have loads to match, outfit wise. Help quickly please!!!! What's best?

Googled them...I presume it's the small one. He doesn't know me that well to spend loads.

TIA!!! x x x

Yes...this seems really really odd. Or is it a joke I'm not getting?

dexter73 · 06/01/2014 22:00

I really don't think it is a good idea to be accepting all these expensive gifts off a man you met 9 days ago. It would be a huge red flag to me (even though it would be nice to get all the stuff).

cloudskitchen · 06/01/2014 22:01

I agree. What's he after in return, if this is a serious thread...

SugarHut · 06/01/2014 22:14

No, no joke. I get offered this kind of stuff all the time. Not having head up arse syndrome, I used to be a lap dancer (people just buy you random crap ALL the time then) and I'm now just back to being a normal model again. I've always refused all this, or been with DP who would get it for me.

I figure, bugger it, if he wants to get it all, then for once in your life, let the guy!!

He wants to take me out for dinner next week. I've said not at this time, I don't want a boyfriend, or a fuckbuddy right now (didn't use that term obviously) so I'm hardly stringing him along.

Much as I would love to own those lovely things that would completely freak me out. I would be out of there as fast as I could. I do understand what you're saying about your line of work leading to this but I would fear he might get a bit obsessive.

ShreddedHoops · 06/01/2014 22:42

You lucky lucky lady! Envy

dexter73 · 06/01/2014 22:48

I would tread very carefully. This is someone you have had coffee with twice and he is spending £1000's on you. I don't think it is a very nice to take these things from him even if he can afford it.

SugarHut · 06/01/2014 23:13

If you realised how frequently I turned all this kind of stuff down over the last 10 yrs, you'd realise that this is not the most unbelievable circumstance to find myself in. Not specific to me, happens to loads of girls that do the jobs I've done and still do.

I've dealt with obsessive before, he's not, he's rather nice and normal, and tbh I think a bit lonely and just likes having something to focus some attention on. On every other occasion I've turned stuff down. I've turned down 3 weeks in Barbados, 2 weeks in Thailand, a brand new Range Rover Sport, shares in businesses, free credit cards. And 95% of the time someone else with lesser morals has snapped up whatever it is for themselves.

So yes, bugger it, this guy wants to buy me a few bits and pieces, for the first time in my life I'm properly single, he can more than afford it, and I'm going to let him.

Meh, a thousand pound handbag to some is a ten pound handbag to others. It's all relative. I was explaining to a colleague once about why I spend £20 for balsamic vinegar and how that runny stuff is shite and he agreed. Then told me one of the company's clients said the same to him the other day when at lunch while producing his £3k bottle of balsamic vinegar (gifted to him by another sheikh in the family).

A fool and his money are easily parted ....

London1975 · 07/01/2014 08:26

Be careful - he only wants one thing and is clearly pulling out every effort to get it. Either accept the gifts and give him what he wants or refuse them and keep your pride and dignity in tact

ScooseIsLoose · 07/01/2014 08:41

are you actually interested in a relationship with this man or are you just using him for what he can buy you? Hmm

propertyNIGHTmareBEFOREXMAS · 07/01/2014 09:40

It sounds like he is going to try to access your fanny flaps via Chanel flaps. A flap for a flap. Only you can decide if this is a good idea or deal.

MadIsTheNewNormal · 07/01/2014 09:59

Although if it's looking like a Chav you are trying to avoid I'd say no to the sparkly Uggs.

SugarHut · 07/01/2014 10:45

Lmao. ..a flap for a flap! :-D no I've been quite clear he's getting nothing from me. I like his company, he's very witty, but no chemistry. ..which I told him! He says he's cool with this but just likes having someone to chat with instead of work people all the time. . I'm not arguing with that...or misleading him.

OP posts:
SugarHut · 07/01/2014 10:47

I did wonder that about the uggs...although they are just for round the house, maybe the supermarket.

OP posts:
ScooseIsLoose · 07/01/2014 11:25

so he's buying you all this stuff because he likes your conversation? Hmm

SugarHut · 07/01/2014 12:18

Yep. A very difficult concept for some people to understand. One of my friends is a pretty well known catwalk model. You should see the stuff she gets. Lol puts my little bags to shame.

Why does this make me feel so uncomfortable?

Apatite1 · 07/01/2014 12:39

MissBeehiving: Because you wouldn't take gifts from men who were giving them to you because of your looks and with a sliver of hope of sleeping with you? Because you're not in the habit of receiving expensive gifts from men sorry friends, and never reciprocating with a gift yourself?

SugarHut · 07/01/2014 13:13

Grin @ "habit". Read the thread....

ScooseIsLoose · 07/01/2014 14:39

If this was a man saying he was just using a woman for what she could give him he would be called all kinds this doesn't sit well with me at all it's just using people isn't it it's all well and good you saying your looking after number one but your not the one being used

lovelychops · 07/01/2014 14:45

Reminds me of that programme 'sex lies and rinsing guys'.
I'm not saying you're letting him think you're going to sleep with him, but it's obviously what he hopes.
As for catwalk models getting showered with gifts, I'd always assumed these came from designers etc as opposed to sad men?

cloudskitchen · 07/01/2014 15:09

I knew there was a program this reminded me of, just couldn't think what it was!
