I love polishes, I'm not a fan of make up, but nailpolish is the equivilant of shoes, or jewellery. It finishes an outfit.

Today I am wearing Essie school of hard rocks, an ace dark teal. With a barry m yellow topaz glitter topcoat. The topcoat looks like models own, but is half the price, from superdrug, buy 2 get a web or croc effect free. And the essie came from cheapsmells.com

Dark green. I have just started using cheapo collection 2000, and am very impressed. Two coats plus Rimmel top coat and we are on day 4, chip free.

Ladies who are obsessed with nail polish, why does my nail varnish peel within 24 hours of application? I've used all sorts, with top coat, with base and top coat, with nothing and whatever I do the same thing happens. It must be my nails but what?

Fingers: Essie Tea and Crumpets. V nice nude with a bit of shimmer.

Toes: Rimmel - bright red, called London Bus I think.

hugandroll does it happen with all brands? and do you have oily skin?
nails secrete oil which is what makes varnish unstick (eventually), maybe yours are particularly oily?
you could try drying them with pure acetone (wiping some over them with cotton wool) before applying a base coat?

I have quite dry skin missfoodie but I always use acetone free remover with a conditioner. I will switch to one with acetone to see if it makes a difference.

It's happened with every nail varnish I've tried but I am yet to give opi or Leighton Denny a go and my dsis has recommended both so hopefully I will get a routine that's right for me.

Mine chip, peel and rub off at the edges within 48 hours max too. That's using Nail Envy as base coat and Seche Vite as topcoat and all sorts of brands of polish. I take the SV over the edges too. I'm also not convinced about Nail Envy, mine still start flaking after a few weeks of continuous nail polish use, so I then have to have a few weeks off to grow out the flaky bits or ignore it and buff them a bit and carry on which is worse in the long run.

THe LD crystal file is fab, I bought one about six months ago and can't imagine using anything else now.

well, precisely why I stopped using nail varnish and switched to gel, then hybrid :)

What's hybrid?

Ah, just googled and found its a salon one, that's not for me then.

hugandroll mine used to do this, sometimes a whole painted nail would just ping off! I think it's if any oily reside from hand cream or oil is left on the nail. Quickly swiping each nail with nail varnish remover before painting them seems to help.

Thanks chocchip I will give that a go because I luffs nail varnish doesn't happen on my bloody toes which look beautiful once you remove the socks and boots Hmm

I'll try it too, I tend to leave mine bare for a day between polishes and use a lot of handcream, I get the entire thing peeling off quite often too.

Having a lovely read back for manicure tips Smile

I am, as of 5 mins ago, sporting OPI Live And Let Die (dark grey/green with sparkle). Nails Inc A&E as base coat and Seche Vite on top.

I'm so jealous, I love nail polish, I'm sadly addicted to Leighton Denny/Nails Inc/OPI on QVC Blush

Problem is, I'm not allowed to wear it at work so don't spend much money on posh polish as it's rare that I can keep it on for more than a couple of days.

I love rouge noir type colours and also LD's supermodel

I'd like to try a real deep navy with a glittery topcoat but not sure it would suit my skin tone - blues tend to make my skin look yellow.

Tiger it's only your nails Grin. How much negative effect on your skin can it realistically manage? And I speak as a colour consultant.

Saying that, I hardly ever stray away from 'my' colours in nail varnish.

Versailles Gold from L'Oreal. Did them on Saturday, starting to chip now so I'll have to take action today!

I love w7 nail varnish. Cheap as chips but better than Opi imo. I've just bought their French manicure kit for a fiver!

I definitely have to stick to my clothing colour palette with nails, which fir me means nothing with yellow tones, I tried coral in my toes last year and it made my feet look grey. I can only wear reds if they are blue-ish rather than orangey. Same with lip colours.

Pinot · 18/10/2012 09:06

YY certain tones I can't wear. LD Supermodel for example, made me look like a cadaver.

Really interesting about colour tones. Maybe as I am warm but not very warm, the negative effect of bad colours isn't as bad. Although saying that, I would never wear fuchsia/magenta/burgundy nail varnish

Report
Pinot · 18/10/2012 09:40

Ahh, yes as fuschia/magenta/burgundy are my go-to-girls!

I cant wear corally tones, red (proper red) or yellow. bright orange is ok, kind of clashy, but peachy definitely not.
