Inspired by our reminiscenses about block heeled court shoes on another thread and my misty recollections about working in Next, what did you used to wear? To work, especially

Lots o' Navy

Lots of gilt buttons, and BURGUNDY. Mucho burgundy. And bodies! ARGGH bodies. I had a peach one IIRC. Pale 10 denier tights

Queenofcake · 04/04/2012 17:28

Oh dear god!

I had a spiral perm.

Lived in 501s with a body. I can recall being pissed and not being able to re fasten the body. Not a good look to have a flappy gusset hanging down the front of your jeans.

I also had a black bomber jacket anorak thing with a detachable fur collar!

Hangs head in shame!

CheerfulYank · 04/04/2012 17:32

Oh Queen, I desperately wanted a spiral perm!

cronsilksilt · 04/04/2012 17:34

when GAP opened everyone was wearing combats

SecretNutellaFix · 04/04/2012 17:49

I remember bodies- pain in the fucking arse to redo the buttons, especially in a hurry.

Cycle shorts.

White socks over black tights. The socks had to be slouch socks as well, long enough to extend past the knee when pulled straight, and the tights had to be at least 60 denier and non-woolly.

School skirt was shortened for me by my elderly neighbour who heard some lads calling me names about the proper length of it when I was 13. She told my mum and offered to take it up to a more fashionable length. 5 inches below the butt cheeks when upright, just skimming when bent over.

Huge rucksacks for school , permanently adorned with tippex. To be worn over one shoulder at any given time, unless sprinting for a bus.

Kickers

Oversized shirts and sweatshirts.

Ski-pants.

Floral button through dresses

Velvet hat with the front pinned up with a huge flower

biryani · 04/04/2012 17:54

Ripped jeans (p[referably Levi 501's, a swimming costume pretending to be a body, and a ripped cropped denim jacket. For work, trouser suits or short black skirt with jacket, bling and scarves. Bliss!!

marshmallowpies · 04/04/2012 18:09

2 velvet charity shop jackets, 1 brown 1 green.

DMs worn with long black skirt, hippy top & floppy hat.

Baggy jeans & hooded tips

Espadrilles

Green felt hat from monsoon which I loved although it had a weird smell of solvents.

My hair was, needless to say, a wreck.

Pinkflipflop · 04/04/2012 18:12

The 90's were hideous in terms of style, my best friend and I used to wear bikini tops with jeans when we went out clubbing. I am totally aghast that I was allowed to leave the house looking like I did! As in a bikini top that you would wear on holiday Blush Blush

Pinkflipflop · 04/04/2012 18:13

And not skinny jeans that you wear now, proper man style jeans that make me cringe now!

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 04/04/2012 18:16

Doing up a body when you were pissed was a nightmare. I almost inadvertantly pieced my fanjo on more than one occasion.

Twit · 04/04/2012 18:16

Yeah I remember other people doing that, at 28 G I really couldn't TBH. Do you remember the ads for wonderbras? I would look down at my norks and back again going 'yeah, and?'
back when they were still bouncy and I was still skinny

Twit · 04/04/2012 18:18

Legs akimbo upside down is not advisable when pissed. If the doing up bit didn't get you the sudden head rush when you stood up straight again did.

swiftybaby · 04/04/2012 18:26

Bodies and 501's with doc martens
Hot pants and wonder bra to go clubbing in Shock
long flowy hippy skirts with awful knitwear- I burnt a lot of incense at this time too!!

marshmallowpies · 04/04/2012 18:27

Oh and what did I wear with my velvet jackets which I loved so dearly? I seem to remember it was either a red or a black long sleeved dress which was pretty identical to the H&M dresses I have been wearing through pregnancy! Grin
I don't think I've left the 90's, really...

marshmallowpies · 04/04/2012 18:29

Sorry: also remembered I wanted a long floral button through dress more than anything but never had one. If I'd had it, would have worn with desert boots, faded denim jacket & canvas over-shoulder bag and I would have thought I was IT!

AphraBehn · 04/04/2012 18:52

Loving all my fellow 90s trollops in our wonderbras and hotpants Grin

MistyMountainHop · 04/04/2012 18:58

i was 10 - 19 in the 90's

early - mid 90's - i wore :

tartan Chipie trainers worn with over the knee black socks and denim skirt

sweater shop, naf naf and benetton jumpers

knee high lace up boots

long skirts

long spiral perm

bright red lipstick nicked from market

silver puffa jacket a la bianca from eastenders Blush

mid - late 90's i was a rocker / indie / skater-type wannabee and wore:

baggy combat trousers or baggy skater jeans worn with tight crop top to show off navel ring (I was very skinny and toned pre kids grrrr)

wearing a bikini top teamed with the above trousers when clubbing

tight band t-shirts

wallet chains

purple nail varnish

hair in the style of natalie imbruglia in the "torn" video but with random chunks bleached white (sometimes coloured in with hair mascara)

nose ring

adidas gazelles

retro adidas tracky top

skate trainers, vans etc

awww, am all nostalgic now :)

janmoomoo · 04/04/2012 19:06

I remember a lot of this as 80s stuff too. Bodies def came in during the 80s as I remember wearing them to work in 1988. And a bit before that was when Next became really popular and the massive shoulder pads were in, dallas and dynesty style. Also espadrilles (as worn by wham and nick heywood) and spiral perms were in the 80s weren't they?. I had the perm!

In the 90s I became a student and that was when everyone was wearing grunge. DMs (with beads on the laces), skirts with leggings, skate trainers, tie dye tops with little mirror bits on. I also had a pair of black dungarees which I recall wearing often to the student union.

Yama · 04/04/2012 19:08

Bucharest - I adored Wendy James from Transvission Vamp. I wore that pale pink lipstick for years. I also got my hair done just like hers. I wanted to be her.

crazyaccountant · 04/04/2012 19:09

The fucking sweater shop! My god that has just make me laugh out loud, I was obsessed and obvs looked amazing teaming their striped monstrosities with bennetton pea green straight leg saggy arsed jeans!

Also black trousers teamed with any kind of metallic highly flammable fabric top to go out in with sandals! Remember when there was no jeans or trainers anywhere on nights out! Lads were in black trousers and dress shirts!

Up here in NE "Geordie jeans" was the shop of choice for all your "eclipse" denim and black bomber jacket needs!

As for make up boots no17 shell frosted pink lipstick and rimmel hide the blemish and pressed powder were what everyone seemed to go mad for! And anything white musk related from the body shop alongside davidoff cool waters or exclamation!

This thread has made me chuckle!

piratecat · 04/04/2012 19:11

o gosh just remembered those black v necked long sleeved tops with white cuffs and collars! 93 ish?

Astr0naut · 04/04/2012 19:13

It's strange to be on a thread where I'm exactly the same age and wore exactly the same stuff as other people here!

My only regret is the baggy band T-shirts. I wore too many and they did nothing for my figure. Nor did the fringed, tie dye summer skirt I wore with said T shirts.

I had genuine ripped jeans, as my bf at the time worked on building sites and had some. Used to like wearing them with stripy tights underneath. But never on a night out; nights out were for as little as possible.

I still own a tie dye short dress from Quiggins that I bought at 17. Still have a short tie dye skirt and get this - wore it through 2 pregnancies, as it fit under the bump! Same for my long, tiered purple skirt.

cybbo · 04/04/2012 19:15

Argh the sweater shop!! My Mum used to drag me in the Chichester branch all the time

And Racing Green! Whatever happened to them?

I was remembering what kind of coat I wore in the 90's. It was a soft pink, MASSIVE slouchy huge collared thing with one button, from Next of course.

God I loved that coat

OP posts:
cybbo · 04/04/2012 19:20

Did anyone have a kind of really long crochetted almost floor length cardigan from Next- the most mishappen garment I think I ahve ever seen but de rigeur. Came in khaki green and dark dusky pink. Might have had toggles

there was a joseph Technicolour dreamcoat version too IIRC

OP posts:
crazyaccountant · 04/04/2012 19:23

Ah just remembered something else!

Those bloody colour changing t shirts? Anyone else remember those beauties?!

cybbo · 04/04/2012 19:24

OMG yes!

And two tone nail varnish

And arf at the black tops with the white shirt collar and cuffs. That was staple workwear with dodgy black nylon bootcut trousers and ankle boots for lots of us
