It was acceptable in the 90's

Inspired by our reminiscenses about block heeled court shoes on another thread and my misty recollections about working in Next, what did you used to wear? To work, especially

Lots o' Navy

Lots of gilt buttons, and BURGUNDY. Mucho burgundy. And bodies! ARGGH bodies. I had a peach one IIRC. Pale 10 denier tights

I loved my body shop "animals in danger" drawstring bag and rucksack for school. Used to wear sweater shop jumper, denim shorts over stripy tights over my DM boots.

In the late 90s got really excited when Maybelline came to the UK.

Tigresswoods · 05/04/2012 22:34

1gglepiggle are you wearing your Sweater Shop jumper next non-uniform day? I think I'll wear mine

Grin
lololizzy · 05/04/2012 22:36

1gglePiggle, I worked in Boots when Maybelline and Ruby & Millie makeup came in and some staff stayed up all night putting it in. There was such a buzz of excitement...with bated breath I ran to the shelves next day, with my staff discount purchased my first ever Maybelline mascara in the pink & green tube and ended up with panda eyes by lunchtime, and quickly learnt what totally hyped up shit it was

lololizzy · 05/04/2012 22:37

so I saved my staff discount for the chocolate covered pretzels that were bloody amazing and about the only good thing to have disappeared with the 90s

Hownoobrooncoo · 05/04/2012 22:48

I really miss grunge and docks being trendy, was so glad to see the ack of heels. Can't believe we have come full circle with the ridiculous heels that are out there and the OTT make-up, and glamour/playmate look that prevails. FFS, folk are wearing false eyelashes as everyday wear!

1gglePiggle · 05/04/2012 22:54

Tigress - yes that was exactly what I did wear on no-uniform mufti day Smile

1gglePiggle · 05/04/2012 22:59

Lolo - I remember those pretzel flipz - they went down well with a bottle of fruitopia or oasis (when it was a glass bottle!).

Back to h&b I used to love vanilla impulse, Charlie sunshine, aapri balancing fluid, hair mascaras. I bought some vanilla impulse from eBay as they still sell it in Germany and it took me right back to working in Superdrug as a Saturday girl with my yellow and blue striped tabard! Grin

lololizzy · 05/04/2012 23:04

let's hope the fashion flips back again, to the grungier days of Kate Moss or the very natural and cool Justine Frischmann, also Charleen Spiteri, the girl from Sleeper etc..all cool chicks, none what you'd call 'glam'...

1gglePiggle · 05/04/2012 23:11

Yes, not liking the TOWIE look, much too high maintenance. All that fake tan, eyelashes, hair extensions, totally cba with it (plus they look shit) Grin

lololizzy · 05/04/2012 23:20

it puts a lot of pressure on, and it's simply impossible to keep up in a normal lifestyle. I have a job where I get grubby and sweaty all day, you'd have to adopt a whole new shallow way of life to keep your hair, nails etc intact..my one concession is gels put on (and add my own colours) because of handwrecking job , at least my colours stay on. And i feel vain just for that! My cousin spends about an hour just on her nighttime skin and hair routine. To go to bed!!!!! Much as i (at the time) cringed at the stereotypes of geezer birds or girlpower, I long for the return of that more fun , low maintenance. one of the lads scenario (which i certainly was, back then) way...

noddyholder · 06/04/2012 07:02

Actually looking at this again my hair is a lot lighter more sandy than full on red lik it wascwhen I was younger (sob). Might be the lights innthat club.

cybbo · 06/04/2012 10:25

Aw. Poor nodders, mooning over her 90's pictures. In the shed. In her nightie in the middle of the night

OP posts:
noddyholder · 06/04/2012 10:30

Grin Its not in shed is now on my desk to remind me to stop eating so much

whoknewthat · 06/04/2012 10:36

I was stopped in the street several times as people thought I was Justine (swells with pride)

I too hate the current made up look. I always feel ancient exclaiming that these days people are such a very funny colour Hmm

I remember having a chocolate brown below the knee silk dress with long sleeves, which I wore with knee length lace up boots.

I was going for the whole 'Oliver' look.

I had some lovely purple floral tapered trousers from Laura Ashley which I wore with an oversized charity shop arran cardigan and green doc Martens with red laces.

I looked great Grin

noddyholder · 06/04/2012 10:38

Justine was and still is beautiful

whoknewthat · 06/04/2012 10:43

Actually there was a photo of her now in the paper a few months ago and I STILL look like her. We have aged (and expanded) together Wink

noddyholder · 06/04/2012 10:45

Her wedding photos were stunning did you see tehm? You are v fortunate to look like her!

cybbo · 06/04/2012 10:46

I think I look fatter in my 90's pic than I do now. Am deffo more mumsified then

Face was all fat. Or maybe that's good

OP posts:
noddyholder · 06/04/2012 10:46

My face is slimmer but my boobs are bigger I think

noddyholder · 06/04/2012 10:47

I was on masses of steroids then though (excuses)

herecomesthsun · 06/04/2012 10:52

DD is 7 weeks old. I am wondering what style shenanigans she will get up to as a teen. Maybe DH should start practising now "You are NOT going out like that!"

My fave item from the 90s was a wrap around green velvet skirt, effectively with a big slit up the side, that came down to my ankles. I bought it from Camden market and wore it till the pile came off so much of the velvet that it erm stopped being velvet.

cocolepew · 06/04/2012 10:53

I was tiny then, only a size 8 Absoulutely no boobs, now they get in the way. I'm going on a diet.

cybbo · 06/04/2012 10:54

My boobs bigger now

Well, one of them is Hmm

OP posts:
cocolepew · 06/04/2012 10:56

My feet are bigger too.

noddyholder · 06/04/2012 10:57

Grin. This sent me into diet mode (dysfunctional old bat alert). Which in turn sends me into sabotage mode and I have eaten a packet of walkers already
