Inspired by our reminiscenses about block heeled court shoes on another thread and my misty recollections about working in Next, what did you used to wear? To work, especially

Lots o' Navy

Lots of gilt buttons, and BURGUNDY. Mucho burgundy. And bodies! ARGGH bodies. I had a peach one IIRC. Pale 10 denier tights

I loved ski pants!

StringOrNothing · 05/04/2012 13:44

Off duty, like some other posters I took advantage of the fact that the 90s coincided with my having a very flat stomach to expose my midriff at every opportunity. I was also the proud possessor of a black crushed velvet long sleeves, high neck body which was about 50% elastene and cost me a tonne, I still have it, but somehow haven't found the opportunity to wear it recently. And a load of ankle length skirts with buttons up the middle - I loved them.

But the outfit which brought the most male attention was, bafflingly, a high-necked, long sleeved grey marl body from Top Shop, worn with faded black cut off 501s over grey wool tights and DM shoes (before DMs changed the shape of their shoes so they stopped fitting me Sad). It had the most extraordinary effect on men for some reason Confused - the nineties were a strange time.

cocolepew · 05/04/2012 13:49

I spent my last years at school looking like Bob

noddyholder · 05/04/2012 13:54

I was gothy in the 80s. Then total turnaround in the 90s and was obsessed with linda evangelista and co.

cronsilksilt · 05/04/2012 14:25

noddy I have had a nosy at your profile and your ds is the double of you!
I also had Bob hair Grin couldn't get decent gel in those days so used sugar and water. I remember being chased by wasps across the park. I thought I was tres cool but I must have looked a right twat.
Also wore ski pants and leggings all the time - I'd for gotten about that!

noddyholder · 05/04/2012 14:26

I loved her! Esp singing with wiggy

akaemmafrost · 05/04/2012 14:48

Chenille. Remember chenille jumpers and cardies absolutely everywhere in shades of plum, burgundy and bottle green? We all wore them Grin and I remember a friend of mine saying "in 20 years time we'll all be saying, remember those bloody awful chenille jumpers we all wore?" it always makes me Grin to remember that.

noddyholder · 05/04/2012 14:51

Devore was also popular I hate it now

Bucharest · 05/04/2012 15:01

Chenille went all holey after one wash.

I can see the Belinda Carlisle resemblance too.

Funny about Heart. We went to see them at NEC and were convinced yer woman was about to give birth. We hadn't realised from the acreage of velvet and lace she was a lardy.

cybbo · 05/04/2012 15:39

She was the one that was only ever shot from the neck up in videos. Like her from Wilson Phillips

I remember wearing dm's with my summer check primary school dress circa 1995
Blush.

Early teens spent using 'sun-in' and having straw like orange hair because of it.

SheepAreSuper · 05/04/2012 18:48

Culottes (floral mainly and all in ones)
Denim shorts over opaques, white body, suede waistcoat.
Button through floral maxis with DMs.
Long-line woollen waistcoats.
Coloured jeans (or candy coloured stripes)
Kickers and Kangol hats.
Pinafore or spaghetti strap dresses (with DMs)
Lace tops (with just a bra underneath)
Oversized shirts.
Benetton sweaters.

I went to a 6th form that enforced business dress which was usually pinstripe suit with as skin tight a T I could get away with. Also had a lovely grey wool Benetton suit and both got carried over to work where I tarted Blush them up with white patent platform sandals.

MyleeneCrass · 05/04/2012 20:25

I most wanted to look like Justine Frischmann.

Hownoobrooncoo · 05/04/2012 20:53

a nice lacy cream blouse with smart above knee skirt and fitted jacket with a pair of black opaque tights and black dock martin shoes. thought I looked great and was just glad heels went out when I started going out clubbing at about 18. still hate bloody heels.

StringOrNothing · 05/04/2012 21:16

Sheer blouses with visible lacy bras underneath were widely worn. I once unwisely mentioned to a younger woman I was chatting to that I felt that they were probably not appropriate office wear, and she was hugely offended, as she wore them every day and didn't see why anybody would disapprove.

TeaTeaLotsOfTea · 05/04/2012 21:51

haha early 90's I was a teenager so going through my "I heart billy joe armstrong and Damon Albarn" era Grin

Mid 90's I started working in retail for River Island then topshop so lots of on trend fashion.

Do remember the dress with oranges on that River Island had? That was my work uniform.

Topshop was hipster trousers and funky tops in winter then little skirts and vest tops in the summer. (Oh I was lovely and thin then)

lololizzy · 05/04/2012 22:23

in my own experience (in England) heels just seemed to be so out of fashion (apart from maybe the very late 90s) and so did high maintenance grooming (again, until the end with the popularity of hair straighteners etc) Now- i actually recall telling my hairdresser to not do my cut and highlights too perfectly as I didn't want to look to try hard and groomed! Grunge was in for a long time I guess...Kate Moss was my style icon, she was often quite messy looking in the 90s. Snaggly teethed and bandy legged, mousy bed head (till she had the blonde crop), still the epitome of cool she was. There weren't, as i recall, any actual nail salons...just something you could get done in a salon, but not specifically JUST nail salons... over grooming was considered pretty vain and uncool in my circle of friends. I remember a girl with longer (and more unruly) hair than me, taking the piss because I used hair conditioner every time! Shock and she never used it . It was all quite refreshing really not to be too high maintenance and overdone. My ex loved me best in baggy combats and one of his old jumpers. He wanted me to have dreads too , though I couldn't have in my job (or jobs, i seemed to get through hundreds!) We used to borrow each others DMS, converse and tie dye baggy pant camden market monstrosities teamed with my pink recycled camden moth holey jacket made from recycled saris
