Inspired by our reminiscenses about block heeled court shoes on another thread and my misty recollections about working in Next, what did you used to wear? To work, especially

Lots o' Navy

Lots of gilt buttons, and BURGUNDY. Mucho burgundy. And bodies! ARGGH bodies. I had a peach one IIRC. Pale 10 denier tights

Sky magazine (remember it?) was my style bible and I remember them getting all excited over the new wave of clothing that was the future...utility clothing. ie tons of straps, pockets etc. I guess this led to the octo-strappy trews, multi pocketed combats, apron dresses etc.
I've remembered my most treasured and loved 90s item...a pair of black shoes from either Faith or Ravel, which were called 'ergonomic'. They were actually based on the design of a car!!! (think flat , black, car shaped mary janes). I adored them.

My mum has a picture of me from the 90s wearing a long skirt, waistcoat, body and homemade floppy hat!

Grockle · 04/04/2012 23:51

Yy, dewberry perfume!

I wore:

patchwork trousers with DMs ( glow in the dark flowers painted in them & beads on the laces)
Tie-dye flares with bells on (really)
Velvet jackets
Crushed velvet waistcoats with mirrors on
Duffel bags with mirrors
Loads of love beads

As I got older & went to uni in the late 90s, I lived in cord trousers & children's t shirts.

Grockle · 04/04/2012 23:54

And very early 90s - those pump up LAgear/ Nike trainers. I saved up for ages for mine.

lololizzy · 05/04/2012 00:21

i got through tons of those bags and waistcoats with the little mirrors on . And 99% of the mirrors would drop out, leaving a shiny trail in my wake...

ThePoorMansBeckySharp · 05/04/2012 04:22

tiny little backpacks for clubbing
backless tops
combat trousers
wearing trousers and a dress at the same time- why?
wearing your hair in little knots

cupofteaplease · 05/04/2012 06:54

Oversized sweatshirts from Benneton or the Sweater Shop, with their logo emblazoned across the chest. I also had a massive Kickers fleece- I thought that was the business...

Lots of velvet- I had a velvet mini skirt in pale tartan from Miss Selfridge, lovely. I also had a velvet patchwork floppy hat and matching waistcoat.

Long wrap around skirts.

Chokers

Mini skirts with over the knee socks- as a teen in the 90s, Clueless had a lot to answer for!

Tartan, bizarrely, lots of tartan.

Now, my purple shell suit from the Sunday market, would that have been early 90s or late 80s?

Black pull on stretchy trousers with a small boot cut.

StringOrNothing · 05/04/2012 07:27

I had a very straight job in the early/mid nineties so I wore a lot of M&S suits including more than one navy double breasted blazers with gilt buttons - whenever anyone says "it's an investment classic, it'll never go out of style" I think of those blazers - surely the ultimate "timeless classic" garment, long gone to the great Oxfam in the sky.

StringOrNothing · 05/04/2012 07:36

I worked in a large open plan trading floor and there was one particular M&S double breasted suit in pastel blue and green checks which three other women used to wear on a daily basis - I learnt a valuable lesson about not buying very distinctive clothes from mass retailers from that experience.

StringOrNothing · 05/04/2012 07:38

Oh and I never owned the Black Watch tartan pencil skirt mentioned on the first page of this thread for some reason, but I think I must have been the only woman in the City who didn't.

Bucharest · 05/04/2012 07:46

3 photos on profile.

I might as well have worn a flashing sign saying come and get it. Hard to believe that while I looked like that at night, I was in my WH Smith grey pinafore and tie neck blouse in daylight hours.

Bucharest · 05/04/2012 07:50

Pineapple did a range of bodies with no bloody poppers. You had to slide the body across and hope your tights (Wolford or CD 5 denier) didn't get sploshed in the splashback. And the nights that you forgot it was that body and put your tights on underneath. Cue hoooge Qs outside the toilets while you stripped off.

TheOriginalGlitterKitty · 05/04/2012 08:19

I have kept all my 90s stuff. I was 20 in 1992, I remember:

Day wear: black jodphurs/black roll neck/ with HUGE knitty cream jumper with black ankle boot styleee trainers.

OR Gingham dress with t-shirt under it. Or long button through floral thing (I am 5ft- not a good look).

OR 501s (loved these- still have them all...so tiny...sigh...) with bodies. I bought mine from a shop on kings road, had royal blue dyed ones they were lovely. And army surplus trousers from same shop (rockit?).

Jeans worn with a belt with lettersyou added in- mine spelled 'BOY' (i blame madonna Hmm). Also had a BOY london t-shirt with eagle on it (late 80s?) worn with ripped jeans.

I had loads of bodies.

Clubbing: tiny mini dresses preferably see-thru glittery- worn with opaques/wonderbra/velvet hotpants underneath. Sometimes the dress came off mid way through the night and was crushed into tiny backpack.

Hand painted see thru tights material top with long sleeves for that stylish raver look Hmm.

One Valentines night at the Astoria I wore mens red silk boxers with black body and black opaques and my black boot trainers.

Cant believe no one has mentioned Buffalo trainers- still have 3 pairs in my wardrobe!

Later- black zip front catsuit/ lots of shiny spandex crop zip tops/dresses in royal blue/purple with opaques and black suede platform knee boots.

Spray on pink/royal blue hair highlights that ran down your forehead when you danced.

I cant remember ever wearing a coat! Denim jacket probably!

TheOriginalGlitterKitty · 05/04/2012 08:21

Oh Bucharest, someone else wore the WHS pinafore! With the polyester patterned bow neck blouse! Hahahahahahhha

marathonrunner · 05/04/2012 08:25

Coffee shimmer and heather shimmer lipstick. Body suits.

WantAnOrange · 05/04/2012 08:32

My mum used to make me wear those leggings with the bit that went around the bottom of your foot. I still don't know what this acheives other than irritating your foot all day.

I was quite little for most of the 90's, so it invovled a fair amount of Disney Princess dresses.

My nan used to knit me those little half length cardigans (Bolero?) out of the itchyest wool you can imagine (they were very pretty though). She now knits DS lovely jumpers out of lovely soft wool Envy.

TerraNotSoFirma · 05/04/2012 08:45

Anyone remember the denim jeans style wonderbra and pants set?

I had that!
Thought i was ace.

Bucharest · 05/04/2012 08:47

Grin at Kitty. Yes,wasn't it just iconic? Then replaced by the pseudo British Airways stylee beige pleated front skirt and white blouse with orange and navy stripes. How I used to hope and pray all the blokes I fancied would come in.Not.

Bucharest · 05/04/2012 08:49

I always think those stirrupleggings make you look like you have a wooden leg.Confused

We used to take it in turns to be on legging watch. In trendy clubs where a flash of ankle between legging and boot would have been terribly infra dig. "wahpwahp ankle alert!!"

dexter73 · 05/04/2012 09:01

Did you wear your stirrups on the outside of your stilettoes though? That's what all the cool people did!! I think that might have been the 80's though.

dinkystinkyandveryverybored · 05/04/2012 09:16

Roaring with laughter at this thread. Early nineties for me was goth look - heavy crushed velvet dresses/skirts and big boots and black joker jacket - which morphed into band t shirts, jeans and tie died dungarees, which mid nineties morphed into lots of short dresses/skirts (often in jewel tones),leotards and leggings and tartan trousers with platform heels/trainers. Thank god that decade is well and truly over!
