OLYMPICS 2021

Haven't found a thread for Olympic sports discussions so I'm starting one. This thread is only for discussions of the actual sporting events as they happen over the next few weeks, not the unfairness of IOC's rules/philosophy (e.g. allowing a male athlete to declare himself a woman and compete in the women's category...which is immoral, unscientific, and wholly unjust, but that topic already has multiple separate threads).

Although this will be an Olympics like no other, I'm excited for the opening ceremony tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing gymnastics and swimming especially!

Watched the skateboarding until 2am, quite enjoyed it.

Now catching up.

No, no radio comms in the Olympics. She was either very clever tactically or just went for it maybe not expecting it to work. There was few that broke away and I think the bunch thought they’d overtaken them all but they obviously miscounted and she’d opened such a big lead they couldn’t physically see her so it was a bit ‘out of sight out of mind’. Amazing result for her.

Unlucky Bradley Sinden

DuncinToffee · 25/07/2021 14:21

🥉Bronze for Chelsie Giles in Judo -57kg
🥈Silver for Bradley Sinden in Taekwondo -68kg

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 25/07/2021 14:22

The American girls always have very nice leotards.

JacquelineCarlyle · 25/07/2021 14:22

That was a pity for Bradley! He did so well!

Reallyreallyborednow · 25/07/2021 14:30

Have been watching :)

PurpleDaisies · 25/07/2021 14:33

I’ve been out and just watched the end of the women’s road race having avoided the result. Abolutely phenomenal. That one got me properly sobbing.

I’ve got the gymnastics qualifying on now.

EasyLifer · 25/07/2021 14:42

I'm not really into sports and always think I won't watch but then get drawn in! I love watching the interviews with the competitors and their proud families. So pleased to see that we have liftoff with 2 medals today, so far.

Daisyhoney · 25/07/2021 15:15

Ungrateful Bradly Sinden!!
It wasn't his gold medal to lose - he just wasn't good enough on the day. He won a silver ffs and most people would have been bloody grateful at that achievement .

Oh dear what has he said?

DuncinToffee · 25/07/2021 15:47

Ungrateful? Or maybe extremely disappointed not the win the gold?

What has he said?

It was his to lose as no2 after the no 1 crashed out, he knows he is good enough and he nearly had it. You have to be a particular type of person to dedicate yourself to sport, and that sort of person doesn't dream about coming second.
AndPeatysTashisDancing · 25/07/2021 15:52

Loved the women's cycling and obviously Peaty in the early hours. Had to listen to the TKD on the radio, the commentary was poor, but quite funny.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 25/07/2021 15:53

He also went in as world champion, and said he knew he'd made a few mistakes — I think because it wa so close he felt it was his errors that he'd lost it on.

DuncinToffee · 25/07/2021 15:54

He has shaved off his moustache Smile

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 25/07/2021 15:54

I'm watching the archery, and wondering if the Korean ladies stain their bowstrings with their very red lipstick!

DuncinToffee · 25/07/2021 15:58

I don't think there is anything wrong with not being 'grateful' with coming second, he went there to win gold.

Give him time.

Daisyhoney · 25/07/2021 16:09

Even the commentator wasn't impressed with Bradly's choice of words . Of course he wanted to win gold but it's his first games, he's young and he needs to learn to be more gracious. Just because he was ranked higher than his opponent doesn't mean it was his gold to lose - it was his to try to win and he didn't.
In comparison the young girl who won bronze in the judo was totally over the moon - huge congrats to her .

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 25/07/2021 16:18

I'm really surprised the skaters don't have to wear protective clothing, they fall quite a bit and slide over the concrete.

I was watching that too, I wish they had done a little infomercial about the bows, I couldn’t work out what all the little nuts and bolts and sticking out bits were for! I assume it is one of those sports that you think “ oh that looks straightforward” until you try it.

The skate boarding was interesting, were they wearing their earbuds to look cool ,to listen to music or to get coaching tips.

CaptainCallisto · 25/07/2021 16:59

A lot of snowboarders wear them to listen to music as they ride, so I wouldn't be surprised if the skateboarders were doing the same.

viques · 25/07/2021 17:01

Anyone else feeling that they desperately need a dear little grey parasol in their life......

Hellocatshome · 25/07/2021 17:02

I feel I need some athletics in my life!

JacquelineCarlyle · 25/07/2021 17:10

I'm not surprised Bradley was disappointed - he lost his match, so whilst he won silver, he did lose gold. In time I'm sure he'll appreciate having won a silver medal, but for now I'm sure the loss stings.

In comparison, the GB girl who got the bronze medal won her match so no wonder she's delighted as that's the best she could have done.

So pleased GB has 2 medals - here's to many more!
