OLYMPICS 2021

Haven't found a thread for Olympic sports discussions so I'm starting one. This thread is only for discussions of the actual sporting events as they happen over the next few weeks, not the unfairness of IOC's rules/philosophy (e.g. allowing a male athlete to declare himself a woman and compete in the women's category...which is immoral, unscientific, and wholly unjust, but that topic already has multiple separate threads).

Although this will be an Olympics like no other, I'm excited for the opening ceremony tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing gymnastics and swimming especially!

Marking place, thanks Star.

I love the Olympics, and my children are now old enough to enjoy it so I'm excited to share it with them too!

We're looking forward to gymnastics, cycling, swimming, climbing, Rugby and equestrian, mostly. Archery too.

Most of it, really, but not the weightlifting...

tigger1001 · 23/07/2021 16:57

Looking forward to it starting in earnest. Love watching lots of different sports that normally don't get a lot of tv coverage.

TokyoSushi · 23/07/2021 16:59

Checking in, love love love the Olympics!

newnortherner111 · 23/07/2021 16:59

Looking forward to the long jump and the hockey especially. Have met the Olympic long jump record holder (at the time of the 2012 games) and women's hockey still seems a genuine medal prospect.

storminasnowglobe · 23/07/2021 17:03

I'll mainly be following the equestrian events but I love Olympics gymnastics and athletics too, although I don't follow them normally.

PurpleDaisies · 23/07/2021 18:02

Can’t wait for this to kick off in earnest. Next week I’m most excited about the swimming, diving and gymnastics…

Mama1980 · 23/07/2021 18:22

We really enjoyed the opening ceremony I thought in the circumstances it was really atmospheric. Looking forward to the swimming and diving over the next few days 😊

Anyone watching the Cycling, what a gold for Ecuador

And less than a week after the Tour De France! The photo finish for Silver and Bronze, a wheel rim! Amazing stuff.
Bryonyshcmyony · 24/07/2021 09:36

Mainly equestrian and athletics here, but we'll watch anything.

We'll get the popcorn in for the show jumping phase of the modern pentathlon which is usually a shit show/borderline welfare issue

AndNobbyDancing · 24/07/2021 09:51

Denton I know, I was exhausted watching both let alone competing, and it's so hot and humid. Love a photo finish but must be so hard for the athletes. Love watching the later riders come in chatting and going over the line together.

Now on badminton.

GrouchyKiwi · 24/07/2021 10:12

The photo finish was cool. Very pleased for Carapaz and Ecuador.

We're watching the Men's gymnastics from earlier today. My girls' minds are blown by what they do.

CaptainCallisto · 24/07/2021 10:24

Can't believe Uchimura went out in quali! I gasped so loudly I scared the cat...

PurpleDaisies · 24/07/2021 10:25

I had forgotten how much Matt baker annoys me. He’s been to get Gregg Wallace school of commentary with all the “phwoar” “wooooooow” and general shrieking.

Andante57 · 24/07/2021 10:26

Looking forward to the equestrian events.

He didn't used to do it - it's since he started commentating with Craig Heap. I think they wind each other up. They just get more and more excitable as the week goes on!
PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 24/07/2021 10:36

Is there a"timetable" anywhere? I like the sailing and and white like a bit of archery but I think they must be a bit niche as I always have to hunt them down! It would be good to know what's happened so I can look for it later on.

Bryonyshcmyony · 24/07/2021 10:36

@Andante57

Looking forward to the equestrian events.
The dressage is on Discovery plus now
pastafeend · 24/07/2021 10:47

I'm between BBC and Eurosport - I can't justify another subscription simply for a few weeks. Or at least I don't think I need it yet

The men's cycle race followed by gymnastics has kept me glued to the TV this morning. Swimming soon

Bryonyshcmyony · 24/07/2021 10:49

Women's football GB v Japan at 11.20

To go totally analog for a fortnight, the radio times have printed a good guide which is easy to glance at day by day

Yes-you’re absolutely right. It’s going to be unbearable by the end of the gymnastics competition!

Thanks, I think I will do this. I'm confusing myself so much. I have downloaded the official app but I don't find it user friendly for upcoming events.
FrustratedTeddyLamp · 24/07/2021 10:58

Don't generally watch a lot of the sports in the Olympics but the last few I've watched the dressage due to a dear memory of watching it in 2012 with a family member who died shortly after. I've recorded so many events last night and this morning and Google says dressage was at 9am but can't find the coverage anywhere and writing it into virgin has it in a few days time.

The olympics just have a " feel" about them and I would probably watch a few more of the sports but I just never think about them

Oblomov21 · 24/07/2021 10:58

Saw a couple of the clips of Opening ceremony, looked good.
Dh watched it, he said it was good.
