Haven't found a thread for Olympic sports discussions so I'm starting one. This thread is only for discussions of the actual sporting events as they happen over the next few weeks, not the unfairness of IOC's rules/philosophy (e.g. allowing a male athlete to declare himself a woman and compete in the women's category...which is immoral, unscientific, and wholly unjust, but that topic already has multiple separate threads).

Although this will be an Olympics like no other, I'm excited for the opening ceremony tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing gymnastics and swimming especially!

Caught some of the road race today and was happy for Ecuador. Also some gymnastics which is my favourite Olympic event and I might have to forgo sleep to watch more of it live.

I love to check out sports I don’t normally watch, so took in a couple of Judo finals today. Alas, it just looks like a giant tickle fight to me. Can’t get it at all.

I LOVE being able to watch so many events here. Lived abroad for many years and coverage was often woeful. Athens 2004, I was in India and they were pretty much only good at shooting and hockey, so that’s all anyone could watch on TV.

@PolkadotsAndMoonbeams in breaststroke you can do 1 fly kick underwater at the start and after each turn but other than that its got to be the breaststroke kick, some swimmers are putting a sneaky extra fly kick in on their way to the wall at the finish. Its debatable how much advantage they get but its against the rules so they shouldn't be doing it.

Just watched the cycling, it was good.

I enjoyed the 3x3 basketball, also watched the wonens football, the cycling road race (great scenery) and the swimming.

The time difference is a bit of a pain

Good Lord this taekwondo is tense!

I am loathing the BBC coverage. Their trailer and interstitial is amazing - commentary and coverage is woeful - anyone succumbed to discovery + and is it worth the sub?

I have gone over to Eurosport for the women's diving.

I have discovery plus free for a year on sky and we are LOVING it. Would be worth taking it for the month. Great UI and search abilities by sport or by Team GB.

I'm watching on Eurosport its much better, the Taekwondo was nail biting

Good resource for timing of when to watch cycling events.
Basically in the window 7am-10am most mornings.

Oh, and women's footie game times here.

OMG she rode that in a way the rest of them were not expecting. van Vleuten thought she’d won (as did the rest of them). Not used to riding with no radio communication and they just didn’t realise she’d broken away. Think she shocked herself

@DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat what was the reason for the no radio communication? Do they just not allow it in the Olympics? Could they support cars not have kept them updated?

I’m quite in awe at that 46 yr old gymnast on the vault , amazing . I watched the skateboarding last night , which was actually a bit lame IMO .

Oh, I thought Max Lichfield had that bronze then. So close!
