OLYMPICS 2021

Haven't found a thread for Olympic sports discussions so I'm starting one. This thread is only for discussions of the actual sporting events as they happen over the next few weeks, not the unfairness of IOC's rules/philosophy (e.g. allowing a male athlete to declare himself a woman and compete in the women's category...which is immoral, unscientific, and wholly unjust, but that topic already has multiple separate threads).

Although this will be an Olympics like no other, I'm excited for the opening ceremony tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing gymnastics and swimming especially!

Joining in. I luffs the Olympics.
Took the afternoon off work to watch the entire opening ceremony - made the kids watch too Grin

Looking forward to women's gymnastics. And the new events skateboards, surfing and sport climbing.

Eeeeeek!

PurpleDaisies · 24/07/2021 11:17

It’s just gone on to boxing and those men both weigh less than me. Maybe this is the optimum to get out of my pjs…

Me too! That Thai guy is serious

Grin I feel more that it's a lost cause so I've reached for a beer (5 o'clock somewhere, well gone 8pm in Japan) and now watching the women's football
Andante57 · 24/07/2021 12:09

The dressage is on Discovery plus now

Thank you Bryony!

PurpleDaisies · 24/07/2021 12:12

I managed a shower @AndNobbyDancing but I’ve gravitated back to the sofa…
This football match is tense.

AndNobbyDancing · 24/07/2021 12:51

I need more tvs, love swimming as well

Andante57 · 24/07/2021 12:51

The huge, empty stands look so odd, though I suppose I should be used to it by now as since Covid so many sporting events took place without spectators.

We were just saying the same, especially in the football after watching the Euros. The swimming wasn't as stark and you could hear the small crowds cheering. Really feel for Japan, all that money spent on the stands etc

Well done Adam.

Ellen playing well again.

Yes I agree.

AppleKatie · 24/07/2021 13:17

Football being enjoyed here. So lovely to see my boy cheering the goal every bit as much as he cheered every goal of the euros.

GrouchyKiwi · 24/07/2021 13:18

I'm loving the 3x3 basketball.

The match of the day magazine covers women's football and has posters so my lad has England women and men covering his walls, things have definitely changed for the better.
AndPeatysTashisDancing · 24/07/2021 14:17

I can't believe the build of the swimmers, they have changed so much over the last 10years.

Thought I needed a better user name, planning on setting the alarm for Peaty's semi at 3.30am happy to join in with #haveapintwithpeaty

@PolkadotsAndMoonbeams

Is there a"timetable" anywhere? I like the sailing and and white like a bit of archery but I think they must be a bit niche as I always have to hunt them down! It would be good to know what's happened so I can look for it later on.
I've downloaded The official Olympics app... Live updates and full schedual. It's a bit clunky and you have to do a fair amount of scrolling, but it's up to date and you can see tag your fave sports and team for updates.
PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 24/07/2021 14:48

Thanks, I'll download the app, and if I go to the shops I'll look for the Radio times. Smile

Disappointing heat for the ladies four in the rowing. I'm so used to us whizzing away with it, it seems bizarre to see the Brits at the back.

The women's eight are looking like they're going to come in last in their heat too. They're both new teams though, so hopefully we'll be back up there in a few years.

Hellocatshome · 24/07/2021 18:17

Some sly little rule breaking going on in the swimming. I think time for some sort of VAR system given that winning or losing can be down to hundredths of seconds.

JacquelineCarlyle · 24/07/2021 19:20

Can I join? I love the Olympics too! Loved the opening ceremony (even though it seemed quite sad with no crowds and socially distanced athletes) and have enjoyed today.

Hope Helen Glover and Polly Swann get better as they progress through the Games and hope the same for the rest of GB rowing! Wishing all Team GB and also Ireland the very best! Gutted for the Irish Judo guy earlier this morning - was winning with 3 seconds to go and then lost! Gutted!

I know the Games aren't the same and very much feel for Japan and how much they've spent to not reap the income, but it is a phenomenal sporting spectacle and I just love it!

Agree, and the mens 8s more like watching the football

Helen has had THREE children since 2016
JacquelineCarlyle · 24/07/2021 20:36

I know Helen has had DCs -it's fab! I used to row myself (to national but not international level) and absolutely love what Helen has achieved. Plus Polly is phenomenal given she's a doctor and has worked throughout the pandemic so really hope they keep getting better and better through the Games!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 24/07/2021 20:40

If Alex Scott keeps saying "affletics" this is going to feel a very long Olympic Games.

Sorry, didn't mean to sound patronising, just blown away by her. Although my lack of fitness excuse of birthing the next generation is ruined by her Grin

In what way Hello?

I happily swim lengths but have very little idea about racing!
