OLYMPICS 2021

Haven't found a thread for Olympic sports discussions so I'm starting one. This thread is only for discussions of the actual sporting events as they happen over the next few weeks, not the unfairness of IOC's rules/philosophy (e.g. allowing a male athlete to declare himself a woman and compete in the women's category...which is immoral, unscientific, and wholly unjust, but that topic already has multiple separate threads).

Although this will be an Olympics like no other, I'm excited for the opening ceremony tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing gymnastics and swimming especially!

Silver for Keely Hodgkinson

I cried. What an amazing women's 800m. And Reekie so close and a PB.

British record for the teenager Hodgkinson, amazing.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 03/08/2021 13:42

fabulous british women!

AbsolutelyPatsy · 03/08/2021 13:44

the pole vault makes me nervous

DuncinToffee · 03/08/2021 13:49

200m final next, I have mixed feelings about this one.

AndEmilyCampbellDancing · 03/08/2021 13:58

I chose not to watch.

Bryonyshcmyony · 03/08/2021 14:06

Typical wet comments from the pundits

cricketmum84 · 03/08/2021 15:46

LOVED the climbing!

GrouchyKiwi · 03/08/2021 16:18

I wanted to watch the climbing. Does anyone know which section it would be in on iPlayer? It's not mentioned in any of the blurbs.

DuncinToffee · 03/08/2021 16:28

The speed climbing was shown at 11:45 on bbc 1 if that is any use. Not sure if they showed more later.

GrouchyKiwi · 03/08/2021 16:34

Thanks Duncin. Should be able to find it from that excellent information. Flowers

GrouchyKiwi · 03/08/2021 18:00

Found it. It's on the Red Button coverage just before 12pm.

I wonder if they've got the labels wrong.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 03/08/2021 20:41

I'm watching some of the climbing on the highlights. It's awkward because you can't really get an idea of the perspective from the camera angles!

Bryonyshcmyony · 03/08/2021 20:45

I thought the climbing was exciting for the first two goes. Then it was really boring to watch

Buggerthebotox · 03/08/2021 20:53

"200m final next, I have mixed feelings about this one".

Me too. I wondered what the pundits would say...Hmm

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 03/08/2021 21:00

The speed climbing is a better, but the lead climbing — the way they filmed it you couldn't tell what angle the wall was at at all.

SCMocha · 04/08/2021 09:33

this speed climbing is interesting. Isn't the course different at every event they go to? So how are they always having these personal bests?

Bryonyshcmyony · 04/08/2021 09:35

I guess it's the same distance

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 04/08/2021 09:48

I think it might literally be the same course actually. Because they were talking about how one of them pioneered missing the fourth hold on the left (or something) out, and said something about how one of the Boulder specialists wouldn't be as comfortable as done with the speed wall and would have to think about where he was climbing while the others just know the route.

DuncinToffee · 04/08/2021 09:52

I googled it

To begin, Speed Climbing revolves around a standardized 15-metre route. This route has not changed in years and asks the athlete to climb to the top as quickly as possible.

Brilliant! Thank you
DuncinToffee · 04/08/2021 09:55

The bouldering and lead events were very impressive, such a shame the camera work doesn't do it justice.

DuncinToffee · 04/08/2021 09:57

Did anyone hear that climbers wear shoes that are 2 sizes too small so that there toes are bent for better grip Shock

SCMocha · 04/08/2021 09:57

ah thanks, that's surprised me actually, as it sounds kind of dull to have the same course all the time!! And also hard to make it absolutely identical, though I suppose that's not hard for olympic level facilities.
