OLYMPICS 2021

Haven't found a thread for Olympic sports discussions so I'm starting one. This thread is only for discussions of the actual sporting events as they happen over the next few weeks, not the unfairness of IOC's rules/philosophy (e.g. allowing a male athlete to declare himself a woman and compete in the women's category...which is immoral, unscientific, and wholly unjust, but that topic already has multiple separate threads).

Although this will be an Olympics like no other, I'm excited for the opening ceremony tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing gymnastics and swimming especially!

interesting. I like the way the olympics make you learn things about sports you'd never even thought about before!

DuncinToffee · 04/08/2021 10:25

Ollies and nollies in skateboarding Grin

I watched the Street skating and I am still none the wiser. Now watching Park

Ben whittaker, what a grade A dick.

cricketmum84 · 04/08/2021 10:38

I'm really starting to question what I'm doing with my life when a 13yo is capable of winning an Olympic medal 😂

Floralnomad · 04/08/2021 11:00

I watched some of the skateboarding in the early hours and it still leaves me completely underwhelmed.

Halsall · 04/08/2021 11:25

I found myself watching the womens' marathon swimming after midnight last night. Apparently the water temperature was approaching 30 degrees and that was at 7:30 am. The swimmers have to keep hydrated and one of the weirdest things I've ever seen was the coaches waving bottles - or in some cases even cups - of water on incredibly long wibbly sticks at the 'feeding stations' at the end of every lap!

It was 10km (!) and took so long that the commentators were talking about all sorts of random things. At one point they were discussing visits to the Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo Grin

Just like the footballers taking off their medals after the Euros defeat. Makes me so cross as they are poor role models for kids. Celebrate success but be gracious in defeat. They won/earned a silver medal.

can't have been comfortable swimming in such warm water. Funny when they lie on their backs and just pour drinks in the direction of their mouth!

Hector Pardoe is in the men's event tonight for GB.

Floralnomad · 04/08/2021 12:03

I saw the last lap on that swimming it doesn’t look pleasant at all .

Amdone123 · 04/08/2021 12:13

I'm loving the Olympics ( as I knew I would ) but I seem to be spending most of my time crying !

DuncinToffee · 04/08/2021 12:35

Looks like KJT is out of the heptathlon injured.

Bryonyshcmyony · 04/08/2021 12:36

Gutted for her

Floralnomad · 04/08/2021 12:48

When did the swedes get so good at show jumping ! Such a shame about KJT , and it’s a bit mean to disqualify her for going out of her lane , hardly her fault , next time she falls over injured she must remember to only roll about in pain within her lane .

Andante57 · 04/08/2021 13:25

Well done Ben. Gosh that was exciting. It was also nice to see afterwards people from other countries coming up and congratulating him.

SCMocha · 04/08/2021 14:01

gosh, some of the shorts that those 200m male runners wear are a bit form fitting Shock

Quartz2208 · 04/08/2021 14:18

@SCMocha I am not sure I would even use the word a bit! De Grasse's were very revealing!

SCMocha · 04/08/2021 14:20

I think maybe the colour of them didn't help!
A lot of the later photos seem to be waist up only...

I don't think I'm cool enough for the skateboarding. Grin

Sky was obviously thrilled with her medal. Her accident a year ago sounded absolutely awful.

AndEmilyCampbellDancing · 04/08/2021 15:40

The more I've watched the more uncomfortable I have been with the age of competitors in the skateboarding.

Oblomov21 · 04/08/2021 15:40

I watched the young GB girl skateboarding. I knew loads of skateboarders, but I don't know all that much about which moves are the trickiest. I admit. But hers looked really basic. Boring to watch I'm afraid. Please enlighten me, why was hers so good?

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 04/08/2021 15:48

I wondered whether for girls, skateboarding might be easier when you're younger?

Your centre of gravity changes as you grow up, and I wonder whether that might affect it. And I know that there are some gymnastic and I've skating moves that young teen girls can do but can't when they've gone through full puberty.

Reallyreallyborednow · 04/08/2021 16:09

Which moves are those? Trying to think and there aren’t any I can remember, not in gymnastics anyway.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 04/08/2021 16:18

It's the quad jumps in skating.

Give me a minute and I'll get back to you on the gym ones — I was watching one of those "Gymnasts react to" videos, but have to check who it was and what they were talking about!

Reallyreallyborednow · 04/08/2021 16:24

So pre puberty girls can do quad jumps on the ice but not post puberty? Wow interesting.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 04/08/2021 16:28

I was mistaken on the gymnastics — it was Shawn Johnson East. She said she did it when she was about 10 then grew and couldn't land it, but I've watched with subtitles on now because I couldn't tell exactly what she said, and she was saying she couldn't land it on the beam after that. But I think it was because it took up too much space rather than because she couldn't do it.
