OLYMPICS 2021

Haven't found a thread for Olympic sports discussions so I'm starting one. This thread is only for discussions of the actual sporting events as they happen over the next few weeks, not the unfairness of IOC's rules/philosophy (e.g. allowing a male athlete to declare himself a woman and compete in the women's category...which is immoral, unscientific, and wholly unjust, but that topic already has multiple separate threads).

Although this will be an Olympics like no other, I'm excited for the opening ceremony tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing gymnastics and swimming especially!

Question for anyone who knows anything about BMX (I very clearly dont! Blush)
How do they even start learning the flips and 360 turns? Any bad landing or mistake could presumably result in serious injury (and damage to your bike!) When dD used to do gymnastics in a very amateur way they had foam "leaf" shape type things that assisted a back flip or the coach could assist....but that cant really happen with a bike...?

I've seen them practice and land in foam pits but I imagine you o ly have access to that kind of thing once you reach a certain standard. Goodness knows how they do it before they have access to such things, maybe just go for it and pray?!

Just watching Today at the Games - the Gadirova twins are just lovely. Such talented individuals & seem genuinely humble. Love how they said that even if they're nervous, they smile & feel better. Fantastic girls!

Jack Laugher did well to get a medal . Watched the start of the athletics overnight and we did well in the men’s 1500 heats , shame about Adam Gemili as he’s such a lovely person . Currently watching the gymnastics and I thought Biles should have scored much more than 14.00 .

I can't help but feel a bit sad for the young Chinese gymnast who just won the gold. Her coach? Was pushing, pulling and grabbing her. She looked like a rabbit caught in the headlights. She needed someone to talk to her. Explain these photographers want a picture, not grab her shoulders and drag her back Sad

So happy Simone got her bronze with the sterling routine. Glad the Chinese women have finally picked up some gymnastics medals after a disappointing time this Olympics.

Was so pleased to see Simone on the beam!! Glad that she is able to finish her Olympics on a success. I hope it's not the end of her competing, though I could understand if it is.

Hazel looks like she has a cross made of tape on her blouse?! It first looks like a flag, secret swiss supporter or something, but then when you look again, it seems like tape. Maybe not, maybe that is the design, as surely she'd have had time to change to something else if needed.

All my children are out of the house. Dh is at work and he's taken the dogs with him. I am curled up on the sofa with a mug of tea and a blanket watching the show jumping. Utter bliss.

Synchronised swimming (duet technical routine) is happening at the moment, no idea when BBC will show it but it will be live on Discovery.
