OLYMPICS 2021

Haven't found a thread for Olympic sports discussions so I'm starting one. This thread is only for discussions of the actual sporting events as they happen over the next few weeks, not the unfairness of IOC's rules/philosophy (e.g. allowing a male athlete to declare himself a woman and compete in the women's category...which is immoral, unscientific, and wholly unjust, but that topic already has multiple separate threads).

Although this will be an Olympics like no other, I'm excited for the opening ceremony tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing gymnastics and swimming especially!

@stripedbananas

On discovery can you choose any event that's happened to watch at any time ?
Yes, you can do. 3 day free trial and then cancel if you don't want to pay for the year/month
RevolutionRadio · 01/08/2021 17:22

Can do a*

Yep, but you need sport and entertainment (I did the year deal for £29.99 but can do monthly) there are adverts (I think only on the catch up) which drove me potty till DS said you can just fast forward them.

It's a shame I've had to pay but it's been worth it, it had everything

BunnyBerries · 01/08/2021 17:34

@stripedbananas

I see BBC has literally just added the event to watch on demand, it's the one for Olympics day 9: that started at 12.20pm

Floralnomad · 01/08/2021 17:50

You only get the 3 day trial if you are signing up for the year ( £29.99)

We did the trial and then only signed up monthly, not sure how it allowed us to do that unless it's just changed since last week.

kanoa igarashi is an attractive man
oh - back to athletics
the jamaican womens 100 race was thrilling!
also the high jump where both men from qatar & italy opted for the gold instead having a jump off. such sportsmanship!
ive been watching on the sportsmax feed

Halsall · 01/08/2021 23:36

I was just coming on to say the same to @stripedbananas - as Bunny says, it's the Day 9 segment titled 'Athletics Medals Session' on the BBC iplayer Olympics page. The high jump is mixed in with the track races so they follow it over the course of about an hour and a half. Or alternatively you can go to the TV guide page and watch it from there.

stripedbananas · 02/08/2021 00:33

Thanks everyone off to check bbc iPlayer

JacquelineCarlyle · 02/08/2021 01:47

Love Laura Muir - hope she does well.

Just watched it - thanks. It's brilliant even before they agree to share the medal. Barshim seems just lovely. After he loses his final shot at the highest setting, you can see him in the background joining in with the crowd clapping Tamberi on for his attempt

Also love his attachment to his sunglasses - he puts them on, jumps a ridiculous height, they fall off, he checks them out to see if they've made a nice soft landing ... I think I'm going to become a high jump groupie Grin

stripedbananas · 02/08/2021 03:12

Fabulous viewing thanks all. I'm so pleased it's all on catch up so I've also finally watched all the gymnastics I'd thought I'd missed. 'Twas fabulous watching the whole of the high jump from the start, very exciting viewing with that lovely ending.

Mogloveseggs · 02/08/2021 08:42

Have been trying to catch up with stuff I've missed.
The high jump-fabulous!
Women's triple jump-what a record breaker!
Cross country-when it's good it's effortless. Oliver looked like he was out for a morning gallop. When it goes wrong! The poor Thai team Sad
Max Whitlock- so happy he won!
The canoe sprints-just wow. The power and balance of those athletes is incredible

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 02/08/2021 09:32

I was hoping the BBC might be showing the eventing jumping. Hopefully they'll switch across for the British riders.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 02/08/2021 09:36

It's on the red button now. Smile

DuncinToffee · 02/08/2021 09:55

What a time for your handlebars to break, glad the rider seems ok.

cricketmum84 · 02/08/2021 10:13

How impressive of Jade Carey to come back with a routine like that after her vault yesterday!!

SummaLuvin · 02/08/2021 10:17

Yes, @cricketmum84 I was delighted to see her put in such a great performance! I would really love the see Vanessa Ferarri get the gold though.

What a performance from Jessica Gadirova, don't think she has the difficulty to medal today, but a couple more years and she will be right up there.

Love to see Melnikova going for the Elsa look again. It suits her.

Ekofisk · 02/08/2021 11:01

Wow - Andrew Hoy at aged 62 at his 8th Olympics!

Floralnomad · 02/08/2021 12:00

Loving the photos of Tom Daley doing his knitting whilst watching the diving . Just debating whether to stay up all night to watch the men’s springboard semi finals .

LavenderAskew · 02/08/2021 12:18

I'm switching between RTE and BBC woth my viewing here and I know there's not been any false starts today (that I've seen anyway) but how many does it take for an athleate to be disqualified?

First offence and gone. No second chances
Floralnomad · 02/08/2021 12:20

They get disqualified on the first false start , it’s been the rules for years .

DuncinToffee · 02/08/2021 12:23

Simone Biles is competing in the beam final tomorrow.

LavenderAskew · 02/08/2021 13:15

First false start? That seems harsh!! Thanks.
