In association with Mini Milk, we've developed a Summer Fun Generator to give you some inspiration for activities to do with your DCs over the summer holidays. Mini Milk would love for you to give it a try, and let us know what you think of the activities.

Mini Milk say "As we head towards the end of the summer holidays, maybe you're struggling to find fun activities to keep your DCs entertained. Try our Summer Fun Generator for some inspiration, and let us know what you think of the activities."

Head to www.mumsnet.com/fun-generator to give it a try

So, what did you think of the activities on the Summer Fun Generator? Did you choose rainy or sunny day activities? Which of the generated activities looks like the most fun? Are you going to try out any of the activities with your DCs? If so, which ones?

Everyone who posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one winner will receive a £300 John Lewis voucher.

Please note your comments may be included on Mini Milk's social media channels, and possibly elsewhere, so please only post if you're comfortable with this.

Thanks and good luck,
MNHQ

I just had a look (at both rainy and sunny) activities - thought they were all really good, some simple and some needing a bit more effort.

I particularly liked the 'lucky dip' idea, where children pull activities out. And the water wall idea - we're re-doing our garden at the mo but I would definitely like to do this.

Will be checking back! This would be handy for autumn and winter hol ideas too (please!).

ThomasRichard · 17/08/2015 17:50

I gave it a whirl and was pleased to see that the rainy day activities didn't all consist of 'crafts' that wreck the house and require a disproportionate amount of time to set up and clear away.

I like that there are 3 suggested activities: enough for a whole day. We're now doing a movie night!

CMOTDibbler · 17/08/2015 19:12

I did sunny, and think we might give the water wall a whirl tomorrow. Not something I'd thought of before

duckbilled · 17/08/2015 20:04

I had a look, it looks good. Nice mix if ideas that don't cost lots of money.

Dolallytats · 17/08/2015 20:18

A good mix of ideas for any kind of weather. Some of the estimated times of the activity are a little overestimated, depending on ages!!

Whyisitsodifficult · 17/08/2015 20:46

Water wall is a new idea on me, I'll try that. The rest are a bit 'done' already. So ideas that don't involve parent participation or too much mess would be great!

missorinoco · 17/08/2015 21:21

I like this.
If you press "Go" again you get a different three suggestions. Some of the suggestions tell you how to do them, such as the water wall.

The children would like the idea that they could choose a choice of activities. I will try this at the weekend.

BuffaloCustardbath · 17/08/2015 21:32

Lots of nice simple activities that are fun and easy to set up - I love 'which way to walk' and played that many a time in the car when I was small, Dad letting me choose which way to drive next at each junction :) it's things like that are so easy but never come to mind at the right moment. I know it's aimed at school age kids for the summer holidays, but could there be a toddler version??

boptanana · 17/08/2015 21:52

Lots of good ideas, it could be further developed by adding in an age filter perhaps?

TheyGotTheMustardOut · 17/08/2015 21:54

There are loads of good ideas on the app and I appreciate that so many are low cost or free. I particularly like the obstacle course idea, I had never thought of something like that and my boys would love it.

I looked through two pages of both sunny and rainy activities and I liked them all.

I think I might use it with my son and let him decide between the activities.

FeelingSmurfy · 17/08/2015 22:04

I tried rainy day and we were disappointed as we thought it would randomly select something not just give a list of activities

I was surprised by how few there were, there are lots of good activities that could be included

Lastly, 2 out of 3 of the options required things you may not have at home (the third could be done without, but if done properly may need stuff you don't have)

FeelingSmurfy · 17/08/2015 22:06

After reading other posts I see that there are more ideas if you click go again (I had loaded page three times and was the same ones each time!) So I take back the limited suggestions comment Smile

kittietastic · 17/08/2015 22:23

I chose the sunny day option and loved the idea to make a 'laser maze' with wool and tape! oodles of fun for the little ones Spidermaning hrough the maze!

MakeTeaNotWar · 17/08/2015 22:25

OMG what perfect timing - DD turns 5 next week and weather permitting, we'll have a bbq in the garden for her and her friends. I think we'll do a water race and obstacle course with prizes to keep everyone occupied!

HappySunflower · 17/08/2015 23:45

Wow, I'm really impressed with the activity suggestions.
We will definitely be giving them all a go!

Singsongsung · 17/08/2015 23:57

I think some of the ideas are great and I like the fact that my dd can select the activity from a choice of 3. We're going to do the colour walk tomorrow and might extend it to other themes too (letters of the alphabet?).

AGnu · 18/08/2015 01:13

Some good ideas. A treasure hunt wouldn't hold either of my DC's attention for more than about 5 minutes but I can see them playing with a shop for hours if they're in the right mood! I might prep a few things to introduce next time DS1 starts trying to make me "banana, watermelon, fish finger, strawberry, chocolate" ice cream! Hmm

WarmHugs · 18/08/2015 08:36

I looked at rainy days, as we have only had about 3 sunny days so far.

I was actually impressed, I was ready to roll my eyes at the same old suggestions.

It's really hard to find new things to do, especially when you think you have tried every single Pinterest activity going!

Some great new ideas though!

TelephoneIgnoringMachine · 18/08/2015 08:37

Some good ideas, although many seemed to be aimed at slightly older children (DD is 3). I second the suggestion that this should be available at other times, would be quite useful for holidays etc. People could submit suggestions too. I would definitely use it.

vestandknickers · 18/08/2015 08:40

Nice idea, but aimed more at younger children. I tried "rainy day" and got some fairly standard ideas that my 9 year olds wouldn't be particularly interested in. Younger children are much easier to entertain.
I was also surprised that the first suggestions started "Use your smartphone....". Actually not everyone has one...!

starlight36 · 18/08/2015 08:53

A timely idea as this week summer holiday fatigue has hit hard due to the departure of a few play date friends heading off on hols and the onset of summer colds. The rainy day activities are more appropriate to us today. DD is currently drawing her own postcards and I think we'll try out the lanterns as soon as we get an empty jamjar.

Some of the activities are new to us and others could be a useful memory prompt.

glasgowlass · 18/08/2015 12:50

Some very simple yet good ideas! I picked both, loved the obstacle course for sunny days, never thought of that before! The rainy day suggestions are things we'd do normally anyway as living in Glasgow we are well used to having to occupy children on rainy days Grin
Bit late for us though as mine went back to school yesterday! Will keep in mind for weekends and inservice days though!

purplepandas · 18/08/2015 12:53

I liked the ideas, some were pretty simple which is good in my book. The lotto idea was good as was the colour walk. We are off to the woods later but I may try the colour spotting thing en route in the car if I need to distract the children from moaning at each other.

Any inspiration is good in my book :)

Catsgowoof · 18/08/2015 12:58

nothing particularly earth shattering, kind of suggestions i'd find anywhere.

Buxtonstill · 18/08/2015 13:02

Some of them we have done before, but had totally forgotten about, so it was great to have a reminder! Letting the kids read them out made them feel more involved, and more inclined to do stuff rather than if was just another suggestion from Mum/Gran.
