In association with Mini Milk, we've developed a Summer Fun Generator to give you some inspiration for activities to do with your DCs over the summer holidays. Mini Milk would love for you to give it a try, and let us know what you think of the activities.

Mini Milk say "As we head towards the end of the summer holidays, maybe you're struggling to find fun activities to keep your DCs entertained. Try our Summer Fun Generator for some inspiration, and let us know what you think of the activities."

Head to www.mumsnet.com/fun-generator to give it a try

So, what did you think of the activities on the Summer Fun Generator? Did you choose rainy or sunny day activities? Which of the generated activities looks like the most fun? Are you going to try out any of the activities with your DCs? If so, which ones?

Everyone who posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one winner will receive a £300 John Lewis voucher.

Please note your comments may be included on Mini Milk's social media channels, and possibly elsewhere, so please only post if you're comfortable with this.

Thanks and good luck,
MNHQ

The activities on the Summer Fun Generator are inspiring. I chose sunny day activities. The wet wall looks the most fun. We'll try the wet wall and click on the Generator again to see if there are any more we'd like to try.

theredjellybean · 31/08/2015 14:08

thought rainy days ideas were a bit unimaginative

Anononooo · 31/08/2015 22:54

Am jar lanterns are great. Home cinema idea is a good one too. Stuck to rainy day ideas today, as it hasn't stopped bucketing all day. Ai like the randomness of this and the links to useful information about places.

I really like both the sunny and rainy day ideas and many of them don't appear to cost too much (if anything). The main difficulty is that my DD is a bit too young for most of the suggestions (apart from the farm visit) but I imagine that it may work better for older children. An age filter would be useful so that the activities are more age appropriate.

Lotstodo · 02/09/2015 08:43

Some really nice ideas that allow children to use their imagination and are quite simple but can be developed into something bigger. Some are quite old fashioned and allow children to be children without the mod-cons. My children love Mini-Milk so these were involved too!

Ganne1 · 03/09/2015 04:48

I tried the rain option, and the results were pretty good - some educational, some fun and even scientific in some cases Excellent!

inspiron42 · 03/09/2015 06:05

There are some really good ideas there.

steviestarship · 03/09/2015 06:20

We looked at the 'Rainy' options.
Thought it would be all the old classics but was pleasantly surprised at some listed.
None too expensive too, which is always an added bonus.

TracyKNixon · 03/09/2015 06:40

There are lots great ideas on the app and even better that so many are low cost or free! The obstacle course idea woul really appeal to my two boys who love anything competitive!

I will defo be using this in future thank you!.

maryandbuzz1 · 03/09/2015 06:51

Easy to use and some unique ideas. Great for a young family.

kohsamui14 · 03/09/2015 06:57

A colour walk...what a fantastic idea! I encouraged the children to think about the mood the colours inspired. I shared some poetry with the children and encouraged them to contribute ideas of their own. We then went home with our ideas, made a collage and captioned it with metaphors and similes.
Guess the colour...
1

  • An inviting fire glowing brightly
  • A flickering candle flame
  • A comforting warmth
  • Or a good feeling
  • The gathering heat on a fresh summer morning
2 -A calm sea floating on nothing, -Tumbling waterfalls from a deep rock face, -A glowing jewel giving off a special light, -Never-ending holes that fall for miles and miles, -Dolphins leaping in the air, -Quiet, peaceful, understanding, flowing 3 It is the salty chips I eat on the promenade It is the red hot sand beneath my feet It is the greedy seagull’s open beak It is the happy sunflower, swaying in the breeze It is the melting ice cream, running down my chin It is my bright raincoat, keeping me dry on wet summer days It is the delicious and salty corn on the cob, yum! My colour is …

To help children (7-9s) write their own poems try this framework
include:
• A metaphor
A simile
•Alliteration
•At least one complex sentence
•Effective vocabulary
STAR CHALLENGE:
To use rhyming couplets in your poem.

What a lovey idea - the colourful lanterns are simple and fun for children across quit a wide range and ready to light those autumnal darker evenings.
It would be fun to make an automatic idea generator fit the child's age, interest, mood etc eg. active or craft

KIRANKAUR1985 · 03/09/2015 07:29

Lucky dip seems like a good one!

00100001 · 03/09/2015 07:30

Well. it works, but it's not very "exciting" - just clicking a picture Confused

I was expecting something like a spinning wheel and it stopping on a fun activity!

wanderingwondering · 03/09/2015 07:32

I liked a lot of the ideas, especially the mini festival but thought the river idea wasa but wasteful, both of foil and water. If anyone has a suggestion of a reusable river I'd be interested!

KittyKat88 · 03/09/2015 07:37

A great idea! Lots of fun things to do to interest children of all ages. Some we've done before, but finding new things to do is great - we tried the 'colour walk' yesterday as DDs are 3 & 5, so a good age for that challenge! It's brilliant that the ideas are shown in threes, and then refreshed when you click again. It's easy to have too much choice so to have 3 things at a time means the kids can get involved in deciding what they want to do each time. Thumbs up from us! Smile

angiehoggett · 03/09/2015 07:37

I love the suggestions and they are definitely things I would try out for the next holidays

shivbrown · 03/09/2015 07:41

Sallyannlloydjones · 03/09/2015 07:43

Great ideas for keeping children amused... our favourite so far is the colour walk.

Elizasmum02 · 03/09/2015 07:51

Its raining and cold today ! the ideas were fantastic, i especially liekd the photo shoot idea and possibly one i will be doing today unless the wether gets nicer. shame i didnt see this before now !

jt75 · 03/09/2015 07:52

Mainly obvious ideas with one or two more original ones.

flozza42 · 03/09/2015 07:53

Some good ideas for rainy days which we have had plenty of love the suggestion of play but educational activities when children learn as they play

silviam · 03/09/2015 07:56

I like the low-cost suggestions :-)

itslcw · 03/09/2015 08:12

Brilliant ideas to stimulate young and not so young minds. Ideas to entertain the whole family regardless of age (the mini festival would be wonderful with the whole family with a BBQ).... also good to see mud pies included for little ones to get filthy but using their imaginations!!

hiddenmichelle · 03/09/2015 08:24

Some good reminders of ideas but nothing really new that I have not seen before - still good to see again though!
