Railcard want to talk to you about their Family & Friends Railcard, plus find out about what makes a great day out for you and your family.

Railcard say “We’re offering you the chance to treat your family to a fun-filled theatre trip for 4. What’s more, you’ll also win a Family & Friends Railcard and free rail travel, to help you save money on all your future family adventures.

If you win, your Family & Friends Railcard (worth £30) means you can enjoy 1/3 off most adult fares and 60% off kids’ fares throughout Great Britain for a whole year. So whatever outings you’ve got planned, your Railcard can get you there for less. It really is win-win.

But that’s not all! Thanks to our pals at ‘Theatre Tokens’, you’ll also have £250 to spend at one of over 240 theatres nationwide, including London’s West End. And Railcard will cover the cost of everyone’s return rail travel too.”

Everyone who posts their answer to the multiple-choice question below and tells us what makes a great family day out will be entered into the prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win £250 worth of Theatre Tokens plus a Family & Friends Railcard.

The Family & Friends Railcard helps you save how much?

A) 1/3 off most adult fares across Great Britain
B) 60% off most kids fares across Great Britain

We love going on the train (the kids think that is a day out in itself), but it has become such an expensive option lately, even with the discount. We have a railcard and use it mainly for day trips to London (visiting friends). Great days out on the train involve the train leaving on time and not being delayed en route!

A great family day out is often one we haven't over-planned. Being free to do something on a whim often leads to the best adventures.

I must be tired as I didn't notice the predictive text fail.

We love a day that has something for us all, something good to eat, and we love a bargain, so always look to use vouchers or discount codes

A great day out for us is where there is something that everyone can enjoy. Last time this meant a museum and art gallery in a UK city we'd never all been to as a family.
Some great food is always a winner.
Being somewhere other than home is very exciting for the kids (and me!)

NotCitrus · 17/03/2015 09:34

C) Both.
We take the train around London all the time as it's usually only a bit more expensive than driving and all part of the day out, whereas cars stuck in traffic leads to screaming.
So a great day out might be train or train AND tram to Wimbledon, bit of shopping then a nice soft play or kids' theatre event. Or just train to Victoria or Waterloo then somewhere in town. We have done Legoland and even a day trip to Leicester by train. Allowing plenty of time to get to the station is vital.

It would be nice if Disabled Railcard holders could get a discount on a F&F railcard, as otherwise I'm paying twice to get a third off my ticket.

C Both.

We always go for days out by train, we don't own a car, and somehow it makes it more fun, sitting round a table on the train and chatting rather than being stuck in a car.

A great day out for us is when everyone had a good time, and wants to go back again, and probably that we had an enjoyable lunch while we were out too Grin. We especially like going to the seaside by train, even better out of season, it's our favourite day trip - we like revisiting old favourites just as much as going somewhere new.

A great day out for us is one that is planned for in advance so all we have to do on the day is have fun! As long as I have appropriate clothes for the kids and enough snacks then we'll have fun wherever we go and whatever we end up doing. I know it's been a great day when my eldest ends the day by saying thank you so much, Mummy.

For us a great day out is the train to London to see a show. We've used the 2for1 offers you get with your train ticket and the kids have loved it.

georgedawes · 17/03/2015 10:47

C) Both of the above

For us a great day out is obviously an enjoyable day (for adults and children) where the children are entertained and the adults not too bored! If it is a play type place (big or small) it makes a real difference if there is adequate seating for the adults. I know it's only a small thing but I have a joint problem and standing for hours isn't pleasant. I also like it when people who bring their own food are catered for and the prices aren't ridiculous - charging £5 for a coffee etc is just ridiculous and makes these kind of days out out so expensive.

A great day out is a trip to the beach.

As a family we LOVE the theatre, so the perfect day out would be a train from Leeds to London and a matinee in the West-End or on the South Bank then chatting about the play and pouring over the programme all the way home on the train.

For me military planning makes a great day out with the kids. Sat nav ready, packed lunch sorted, scoured the web for discount tickets and several layers of clothing to match anything the weather throws at us.

I have a train-mad DS so anywhere we can go that involves a train journey is met with huge excitement!

I take ruck sack full of packed lunch, sweeties & puzzle books. Usually we go to London & visit the museums as they're free. I tend to plan ahead with buses etc to cram everything in. Railcard does provide excellent savings, even in one trip.

My family love to visit wildlife reserves & farms which are open to the public

A great day out is entertainment for the dc but not stressful for us parents, ie no queuing, worrying about buggy access, train or traffic delays. Ideally we would be outside on a sunny day and have tasty healthy food too.

Having only had a car recently we've always used the train for holidays, visiting family and days out. Even now we like the train for visiting the next city - saves on traffic and parking issues. We also did a few local days out by train just because its fun and part of the day.

My DT love going on the train and I think its a great life skill to have. Also I can take them out on my own and share the journey with them, instead of trying to concentrate on driving and keep them from stop fighting. It means we reach our destination more relaxed and the journey is part of the day out.

janeyf1 · 17/03/2015 11:29

Answer: C) Both of the above.

A great family day out is a trip to the local zoo to see the animals, as there is always something new to see each time, and to enjoy ice cream together.
