Railcard want to talk to you about their Family & Friends Railcard, plus find out about what makes a great day out for you and your family.

Railcard say “We’re offering you the chance to treat your family to a fun-filled theatre trip for 4. What’s more, you’ll also win a Family & Friends Railcard and free rail travel, to help you save money on all your future family adventures.

If you win, your Family & Friends Railcard (worth £30) means you can enjoy 1/3 off most adult fares and 60% off kids’ fares throughout Great Britain for a whole year. So whatever outings you’ve got planned, your Railcard can get you there for less. It really is win-win.

But that’s not all! Thanks to our pals at ‘Theatre Tokens’, you’ll also have £250 to spend at one of over 240 theatres nationwide, including London’s West End. And Railcard will cover the cost of everyone’s return rail travel too.”

Everyone who posts their answer to the multiple-choice question below and tells us what makes a great family day out will be entered into the prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win £250 worth of Theatre Tokens plus a Family & Friends Railcard.

The Family & Friends Railcard helps you save how much?

A) 1/3 off most adult fares across Great Britain
B) 60% off most kids fares across Great Britain
C) Both of the above

Thanks & good luck,

Great family days out are ones filled with plenty of activity, the outdoors and a meal shared together in any way it comes eg picnic, cafe, restaurant (and well behaved kids!) :)

Best days out with my kids are when we go on the train as they have my full attention as I do not have to drive! (C - both of the above)

My ds1 loves trains however the cost of a day out by train puts us off. We recently looked at cost to York to take dc to the train museum and it was extortionate.
I find it much more relaxing though knowing we don't have to worry about parking at the other end. Especially as we can get a tram from our house to the train station.

A great family day out for us is somewhere outdoors where the kids can run off some energy. National trust properties are a favourite.

We love our Family Railcard not least because we are a car-free family so we use it loads...and it can even work out cheaper using a train than getting the bus - seriously!

The answer is c.both of the above.Great family day out means great weather,no queues, enough snacks for everyone and full wallet for treats!

C) Both of the above Smile

We love going on the train, but it has become such an expensive option lately. Great days out on the train involve the train leaving on time and not being delayed Smile

A great family day out is something we can all enjoy - fun for the children, but also for the adults.

A great family day out is when none of the kids have a meltdown/fight/fall! Realistically though, a great family day out usually involves nice weather, plenty of running about outside and not too much expense! :)

We have a family trip on the train every good Friday with grandparents to the seaside. The children love the excitement of using the train!

Even if the weather isn't what you would like. I believe family trips are about family, going somewhere to create memories!

We love going on the train simply because it gives my DH and I a break from driving. We bring headphones and try and book trains with TVs as the boys love them! I usually pack a snacky lunch to eat. Trains are great.

The perfect family day out is one where we are all discovering or trying something new, in a new environment. We don't drive so get the train absolutely everywhere and the family and friends railways is worth its weight in gold! Our last family day out was to the Natural History Museum which we all loved, adults and children alike.

A great day out for us is one where everyone is entertained, we love going on the train to London because there are so many child and parent-friendly activities such as the National History Museum, Science Museum, Tower of London etc. or a trip to the theatre. Something we can all enjoy.

National Trust properties are good for a day out too. They are much more family friendly than they used to be and there's usually children's activities which are fun for all the family!

A good day out would be good weather, reasonable priced food and being accessible/enjoyable for toddlers as well as school aged children.

I love my F&F railcard- we've had one since DD1 was a baby. Even though babies travel free, it's cheaper to buy a child ticket so you qualify for the discount.

For a great family day out- my tip is not to try and do too much. Better to take it slow and have lots of time just to look around. If you rush from place to place, it's stressful for parents and kids get overexcited and overtired!

Also, it's often worth investing in an annual pass- better value and you don't feel rushed as you can come back another time.

C) both of the above, love my railcard, we as a family have so many great days out visiting cities and the seaside in the summer
