Railcard want to talk to you about their Family & Friends Railcard, plus find out about what makes a great day out for you and your family.

Railcard say “We’re offering you the chance to treat your family to a fun-filled theatre trip for 4. What’s more, you’ll also win a Family & Friends Railcard and free rail travel, to help you save money on all your future family adventures.

If you win, your Family & Friends Railcard (worth £30) means you can enjoy 1/3 off most adult fares and 60% off kids’ fares throughout Great Britain for a whole year. So whatever outings you’ve got planned, your Railcard can get you there for less. It really is win-win.

But that’s not all! Thanks to our pals at ‘Theatre Tokens’, you’ll also have £250 to spend at one of over 240 theatres nationwide, including London’s West End. And Railcard will cover the cost of everyone’s return rail travel too.”

Everyone who posts their answer to the multiple-choice question below and tells us what makes a great family day out will be entered into the prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win £250 worth of Theatre Tokens plus a Family & Friends Railcard.

The Family & Friends Railcard helps you save how much?

A) 1/3 off most adult fares across Great Britain
B) 60% off most kids fares across Great Britain
C) Both of the above

Thanks & good luck,

My kids love travelling anywhere on the train, it's the thrill of the ride they love. We love taking a trip to the coast and packing a picnic.

A good day out is with family and friends with a big picnic and plenty of places to visit

A great family day out for us entails a train ride (as ds gets carsick) and no squabbles. I'd welcome a beach or castle but the dds wouldn't say no to a bit of shopping. When I was young, we went to Scotland on the motor rail and slept in little bunks which was just a fabulous start to the holidays - practically the Hogwarts Express to me and my brother!

passthewineplz · 17/03/2015 14:48

C) both of the above.

A great day out is being able to hop on a train, and being able to relax as you don't have worry about driving and sitting in traffic. You can also get off at different stations, so you can enjoy things like coastal towns and cities so that you please all members of the family.

A great family day out needs to be relaxed, not too organised and a degree of flexibility. I travel 7 hours on the train with my DC to visit family and they all love it more than driving. Freedom to walk to the toilets, a snack trolley and on one memorable trip, running through York station to get our connection! That is still spoken about with much hilarity.

I bought a railcard specifically for our annual Kidsweek London theatre trip. A lot of peoole don't realise you get tube discounts with it too but only in person not at the machines.

Going down on the train & staying in a hotel is all part ofvthe adventure.

I love our F&F railcard. I usually get it with Tesco Clubcard points, which makes it even better value.

As I don't have a car, we rely on the train for our days out and have had some really fun times, just by taking the train to the next town, looking round a local museum and having a picnic lunch somewhere. Or by using our National Trust membership and taking the train to an NT property.

I use my Family and Friends card all the time to travel to see my daughter, and to take both of my children on days out, it's very useful for us.

A great da out is one where we end up back at home, happy & pleasantly tired, at the end of it. We rarely take the train because our nearest station is 30 mins away, so it has to be a long journey to make it worthwhile... Normally it's faster and cheaper to drive.

We like days that have something for everyone, so trips to castles etc which are interesting on lots of different levels and also can be done on a budget by bringing a picnic!

Love to take the train up to Edinburgh, such a pretty city and so much to do, especially love the penguin parade at Edinburgh zoo.

We use the trains mainly for going in to London. A good day out is helped by good weather!

We appreciated these savings on Saturday where a day trip from our city to London cost less than 20 for me and two children. In fact the fares for the DC were so cheap that it was no problem when DD decided she needed to stay at home to get homework done instead. DS and I had a great day visiting friends in London for a Family and Friends party < bo-boom >

What makes a great family day out? Catching up with friends and family you haven't seen for a while. Plus take something to do on the train - DC enjoy games on their tablet whilst I like a good old-fashioned book, or just looking out of the window is very relaxing too Smile

I got our first family railcard when DD was one, for a trip up to Glasgow. I went to the station to book tickets in person at a quiet time of day, and the nice ticket office man explained that buying a F&F card as well as the tickets would a) be cheaper than the tickets alone b) would ensure that DD had her own reserved seat to sleep in instead of spending the whole journey on my lap.

I've sworn by them ever since.

My perfect family day out involves unexpected surprises and a bit of nature, even if it's only a squirrel or a heron in a central London park.

C -- You save on both.

My F&F card ran out quite a while ago, I must get it renewed before the summer holidays! I love being able to jump on the train and start the day out rather than having the hassle of driving, parking etc etc before you can begin to relax.

a great day out is where there is something for everyone to enjoy as my kids range from 15 to 6 years old. Luckily all my children, and us, love the theatre! Wink

LIZS · 17/03/2015 16:47

C. A great day out for us usually involves a trip to London by train , may be a matinee or museum followed by a meal, part preplanned part spontaneous.

HappyAsASandboy · 17/03/2015 16:50

C) both of the above

A good family day out for us is one with no tantrums! Generally something unstructured where the kids (4 year olds) can wander and choose what to do/where to go next, and somewhere easy for lunch.

serin · 17/03/2015 16:52

Our days out by train have been the most memorable of all our days out. We usually go every where by car so waiting for the train is an event in itself!!

Maiyakat · 17/03/2015 16:57

C). A great family day out involves an easy journey (DD loves trains!), no queues, lots to do, being outdoors in lovely weather, nice food

We love to take the train to York and visit the national railway museum - even better because it's FREE!!! As are all the museums in Glasgow and some of them in Edinburgh . Take a packed lunch and have a bargain day out .

We like to walk in the woods, collecting fallen pinecones & splashing through the stream in our wellies!
