Railcard want to talk to you about their Family & Friends Railcard, plus find out about what makes a great day out for you and your family.

Railcard say “We’re offering you the chance to treat your family to a fun-filled theatre trip for 4. What’s more, you’ll also win a Family & Friends Railcard and free rail travel, to help you save money on all your future family adventures.

If you win, your Family & Friends Railcard (worth £30) means you can enjoy 1/3 off most adult fares and 60% off kids’ fares throughout Great Britain for a whole year. So whatever outings you’ve got planned, your Railcard can get you there for less. It really is win-win.

But that’s not all! Thanks to our pals at ‘Theatre Tokens’, you’ll also have £250 to spend at one of over 240 theatres nationwide, including London’s West End. And Railcard will cover the cost of everyone’s return rail travel too.”

Everyone who posts their answer to the multiple-choice question below and tells us what makes a great family day out will be entered into the prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win £250 worth of Theatre Tokens plus a Family & Friends Railcard.

The Family & Friends Railcard helps you save how much?

A) 1/3 off most adult fares across Great Britain
B) 60% off most kids fares across Great Britain
C) Both of the above

Thanks & good luck,

no traffic, toilets on the move, no messy car, and no stress, going on the train is an adventure for us and the kids

Lots of interesting things to see and do.

We love a family day out on the train. It's so much more relaxing than driving, I like bringing my kindle and settling down with a new book. The dc have a kindle fire to keep them occupied. A great family day out has decent weather, good food options, and lots of activities to keep the dc occupied but also something interesting for the adults too.

A great day out for my family is one where we pack a picnic and head off for the day to somewhere we have never been, we are always looking for a new adventure and as there is a train station at the end of our road we often just pick a stop on the route and head out with no plan at all.

I think planning something fun but not trying to cram too much in is what makes a good trip.

alsproject · 17/03/2015 12:06

The railcard makes it much cheaper to travel into London so that we can go more often. We normally take the kids to the theatre so that they can see some of their books acted out on stage

A great family day out is somewhere not too crowded, where queues and tempers are kept to a minimum. Somewhere fun with lots to do and with a cafe that has delicious, healthy choices preferably not prohibitively priced either. I don't drive so we often take the train

C) both We love travelling down to London. Such a lot to do there.

elizaco · 17/03/2015 12:15

The answer is C.

Our favourite day out using the Family and Friends railcard has been a full day in London, travelling from Preston to Euston. Visiting museums, The London Eye and a bus tour of the city, it is the day trip my daughters talk about over 2 years later. And the train journey itself was a big part of the adventure too.

catowen · 17/03/2015 12:17

Answer - both

Love F&F railcard, makes a journey that would be too expensive more reasonable and cheaper than taking a car!

my family love to visit theme parks the wilder the better

I like using the train because the children think it's interesting and it can be more relaxing than driving on a direct route. But for the journeys we would like to make by rail, the expense outweighs the benefit by a considerable amount, so the car wins more often than not.

The best days out for us have been on those random inset days that aren't tacked on to either end of a school holiday. A lovely sunny mid-week inset day in October made for a brilliant day at Drayton Manor - no queues at all Grin

We live in the very remote countryside so we like days out that include shops, city life and lovely places to eat. We love castles and stately homes with gardens and good tearooms. We also, as the children have grown, like places where we can safely give them some independence.

Trains are great for visitng big cities but rurally not many places are near the train station so you will need a car on the other end too to get anywhere. For us to go to bristol it's still cheaper to drive, pay for parking AND pay the extortionate Severn bridge toll than it is to get the train (which involves car parking fee ath e station - £8 a day last time I went, plus train for 5 of us, then we still have to walk a fair way at the other end of there isn't a suitable bus.
When we went to london, public transport - trains, tube, dlr and buses was great and cheap.

Taking the train for a day out is an amazing experience for all our family. It brings back treasured memories of when I was a child going by train to the seaside for the day! The excitement starts from waiting at the platform and then the possibilities of where to go to have a great day out are endless. Our family favourite has to be either going to Weymouth or up to London.

ClaudetteWyms · 17/03/2015 12:31

A great day out by rail involves trains that run on time, are not overcrowded, that don't cost so much you have no money left for the day out, and with friendly and helpful staff at staffed stations. We love going into central London for a day out.

phillie1 · 17/03/2015 12:36

c Both of the above. Great family day out, is when the 2 kids manage to not ruin it, by arguing with each other!

All our days out are good if we are all in a decent mood, the sun is shining and we have ice cream!
