Hi,

Does anyone know if universal credit back date the child disability element from when you first called dla for the claim form (which dla too will back date) or does uc child disability element start from the date dla make the award?

Thank you

This will depend on your childs needs, not diagnosis. A diagnosis doesn't change the needs you described to dla. They will only re-assess if the childs needs change and this usually has to be for a period of 3 months or more x

Hi, I’ve seen everyone mention back pay. My son gets HRC I informed UC by change of circumstances as soon as I got the award letter. My next pay showed the additions for dla but do I need to ask for it to be back dated or is it done automatically? I’ve tried googling and it says it’s done automatically but I see a lot of people requesting it. Thank you ☺️

You should request the severely disabled child element and carer element are backdated.

Natak19 · 11/06/2025 11:09

Thank you I’ve requested it and it went to a decision maker and it got accepted on the 28/5 I’ve just got my uc statement for this months pay but there’s no back pay? I’m assuming it takes a while?

Relaxinghammock · 11/06/2025 13:44

Backpay takes a while and is separate to the normal monthly payment.

Did you also request carers element and ask for them to back pay that?
With regards to the back pay, you will get a letter once it is sorted, which can take a few weeks.

I didn’t but they must of done it because all I’ve had so far is two letters sent to my journal one for the disability element and the other for caring element, ah that makes sense because it didn’t say much in the letter and in know how things are normally dragged out

I'm currently in the same boat! I have received the two letters from the decision maker, but now waiting for them to re-calculate my statements from the point of change. Hoping it won't take them too long!

GrandTheftWalrus · 12/06/2025 21:56

Has anyone applied for carers support payment in Scotland? Its basically carers allowance and I was wondering timescale. I know it'll come off my uc but a payment every 4 weeks will help a lot.

Same I told them soon as I got his dla award letter so hoping it don’t take as long to go back but just feel like a sitting duck because the communication from them should is say is non existent

Hi all. Does anyone know if you have to be approved for carers allowance before you can apply for carers element on universal credit? X

Relaxinghammock · 19/06/2025 16:51

No, you don’t @MrsW12.

No, you don’t @MrsW12.

Aww thank you so much. I wish I knew this 18 months ago when my daughter was awarded DLA. I’ve popped a couple of notes on my journal about it.

MrsW12 · 21/06/2025 11:36

I’ve been approved ☺️. I’ve asked for them to backdate it. Do you think they will?

Relaxinghammock · 21/06/2025 12:27

If they don’t agree, you should request a mandatory reconsideration.

MrsW12 · 21/06/2025 13:28

Brilliant thank you.

MrsW12 · 21/06/2025 13:29

I explained that I didn’t know that I could claim until now and that’s why there’s a delay.

How did you get on? I called them last week, and the call handler added a note for a case manager to respond by 23/06. They contacted me the next day and processed the back pay for early next week.

Is this for the carer element? I’m waiting on a decision for back pay at the moment.

An brilliant. I’ve had the disabled child element from the beginning and backdated, but I only just found out about the carers element.

Ah I’ve only just seen this! I’ve still not heard anything so might give them a call the last I got anything was 29/5 and that was just saying they will back date it, did you leave another message on your journal or just call?

Yes, the following day I said thanks and asked when it was likely to be processed.
I heard nothing for 9days so and that's when i decided to call!
The thing is, it should be done when they send the decision letter. Its very straight forward. It's litterally just adding the amounts to each statement from the date of award and totalling. X

It isn’t always this straightforward. Sometimes it is more complex. For example, where there is transitional protection or where a claim was previously subject to the benefit cap.
