Hello!

Please help me narrow down some names for my new honey subscription business. It's providing a tube of raw natural honey from different small apiaries and back yard beekeepers through the post monthly.

I would like something modern and not too twee. We're based in Scotland but I'm hoping it'll be a national company.

So far we have

Braw Honey (emphasis on the raw... but I'm not sure if Braw means something different in the rest of the UK? Or Hinnie, which is an old Scottish word for honey (maybe too obscure?) Rare honey, or Real honey. Ugly honey (as a pushback to the fake homogenized honey in supermarkets) Letterbox honey (too literal) Honey I'm home (twee)

I like words that mean 'different' like offbeat honey, but seems to be trying too hard to be cool....

Or words that highlight health or wellness? Live honey?

This is so hard!

I think that if you could use graphic design to influence the way in which the words work together then "Hive Mined Honey" could be a good possibility. It gets honey in the name but also allows you to play around with Hive Mined.
The appearance of the words could imply that "Hive Mined" is the name of the business and honey is its product, eg by having 'Honey" on the line below and in a different font.

Can I just say that I think this is a brilliant business idea. My grandpa kept bees and I point blank refuse to buy supermarket honey but finding local stock (there are suppliers - they just sell out super quick) can sometimes be tricky. My DC can tell Spring dandelion honey from late Summer honey etc and each have their favourite.
Can I just ask - when you say "tube" do you mean "tub"? If it is tube, can it easily be recycled in the Council bin? I would definitely sign up.

Oh thank you! Honey tastes totally different depending on where it comes from, what time of year, what the weather was like etc. I'm hoping to showcase the "terroir" of honey like people do for wine etc.

People would come back to me asking for more of the best honey they've ever had- but actually it cannot be replicated. This year it will taste different, even from the same hive.

(Also, I think you should quickly buy the domain name of every suggestion on this thread that you kind-of like - just to stop some other bleeder pinching your crowdsourced brainstorm)

BeeKeeping · 27/10/2024 07:28

Yes I mean tube as in an aluminum tube that can be household recycled. Like tomato purée comes in.

Bee Line (straight from the hive)
But I also like Honey Bunch and Honey Bare.

There used to be a bus company called Bee Line in the Manchester area. The worker bee is a symbol of Manchester.

Sorry, but almost all of the suggestions you've had are utterly terrible. With the exception of Hive Mined (which is clever but falls down on not explicitly mentioning honey) your original ideas are by far the best.

I like both Braw Honey and Ugly Honey. Assuming both have domains available, I would think carefully about what your brand story and values will be, and who your ideal customer is. Which name best reflects these values and will appeal to your target customers?

Do not, and I cannot emphasise this enough, fall into the trap to trying to create a brand that will appeal to everyone. You'll end up with something forgettable that won't offend but will never excite. If some people absolutely love it and other people hate it that is a great result. Aim to delight the former and let the latter go.

Thank you, that's very good advice

Husband (and business partner) doesn't like hive mined because he says mining has non eco associations 😭

Love your business idea. I can think of two people I'd buy a subscription for immediately. Please come back to this thread once you're up and running so we can buy from you. What are your timelines?

Apologies that I have no useful name suggestions. I can tell you that even if you don't have the word 'honey' in your name, there are things you can do to help your website's SEO:
The URL itself
Have a strapline using the word
Meta tags and descriptions
Alt text
Page names
Headings and sub-headings

Tube + Bees

Tubees

thesunisastar · 27/10/2024 12:24

Naked Honey could be an alternative to Ugly Honey, although there's a make up palette with this name so it could struggle from an seo perspective.

Honeycomb Clan
Nature's Nectar

BasiliskStare · 27/10/2024 12:51

@BeeKeeping you may not want this because of associations but "Speak to the Bees "

I don't think so. It's worked for Naked Wine.

You really do need to develop your customer personas first and understand how you are going to target them and what your route to market is before you settle on a name.

When you picture your ideal customer, who do you see and why are they buying your product? A mid 40-something woman in a market town looking for an unusual gift for her mother in law? A 30 something male in an affluent city who enjoys good coffee and other artisan products?

I know it's tempting to ask "But why wouldn't I want to sell to EVERYONE? !!" (the more customers the better right?) but honestly that is not how successful brands are built. The best brands know exactly who they want to buy their products or services and then ruthlessly zero in on them.

Ugly Honey may be off putting to a an older age conservative shopper, but will be spot on for a hip millennial. Coupled with interesting/unique packaging (I'm curious about the tube concept) that would immediately differentiate you from the existing honey subscriptions which seem to target the safe, National Trust kind of audience.

Orrinocc0 · 27/10/2024 14:44

Bee Hived.

I don't like ugly honey.

GameofPhones · 27/10/2024 15:05

Just honey

BeeKeeping · 27/10/2024 16:14

@thesunisastar Definitely more the hip millennial/gen Z. I think I'm targeting shoppers who have ethical values, want to support small scale producers but don't have the time or inclination to go to farmers markets. They like the convenience of a product that comes through the post regularly without any effort.

Really don't like Ugly Honey, and would never be tempted by it.
Hive Mined Honey I would consider.

“Honey harvest should kick off around April so hoping to launch next spring/summer”

Read this and thought you’d decided on the name ‘Honey Harvest’ which isn’t a bad shout.

or maybe ‘Bees Harvest’ ?
