Anyone want to accompany me while i sleep train DD?

MrsKoala · 07/12/2017 13:58

I am starting to sleep train 13mo DD tonight. She has been a terrible sleeper since birth and always co-slept on the boob. I had a consultation with a sleep expert today who has talked me thru a gentle process of sleep training.

I am starting tonight as DH is away for a week from next Thursday, so i want it in place for then. DH is not particularly supportive because he hates them crying (and i love it obviously Hmm ) so it would be great if there was someone who was doing theirs at the same time for a mutual support group!

What nappies do you currently use and size? DS had a growth spurt and started leaking so I had to change to a premium brand for night times. I use cheap Lidl ones during the day and pampers at night and no problems since. Could be that or she needs to go up a side?
DS slept all night but I woke up at 5am being sick and haven't stopped since. Not sure if food poisoning or a 24 hr bug but I feel horrendous. Dh has had to work from home cos I'm just glued to the toilet and he is stressing big time, he can't seem to cope with looking after his child and then moans at me that we don't have a support network close by. What do other people do when they are sick?? I keep trying to get up and help but I'm just running back to be sick again :-(

FannyTheFlamingo · 10/01/2018 12:59

At night she's in pampers premium size 4. She's quite small though and I think the size 5 would be massive. I think they do a 4+ which might be worth trying. I woke up with a sickness bug a few months ago. DP was working and we have no support network around us. By midday, DD had caught the bug too. I felt so guilty that I'd given it to her. I was better the next day but she had it for 3 days! DP would never take a day off to help me though, but that's a whole other thread! 🙄

boodles101 · 10/01/2018 13:21

Yes I think 4+ is meant to be more absorbant so maybe try those.
I had to get up in the end and deal with DS, he's just napping so I can go back to bed for a bit. I'm also worried that it's a bug and he might get it. I never get so I'll that I physically can't get out of bed so this is really hard for me. Supposed to be in work tomorrow too and only my 2nd week back, I'll feel awful if I have to call in sick.

Belle1409 · 10/01/2018 13:30

Have you tried a double nappy at night? I do that with my DS, we used to have problems with leaking which would then wake him up. Nowadays the top one usually stays dry which you can use as the first Nappy the next morning.

MrsKoala · 10/01/2018 13:32

Fanny -glad you have had 4 good nights. Sometimes they just we a lot - or with my boys their nappy would be dry but their jamas and bed soaking because their weasel was just pointing a funny way and it all came out the side! I found more leakage with bigger nappies as they don't fit so snug.

Boodles - That sounds horrid. We live in fear of d&v in this house. It sweeps thru us all about twice a year. I just have to get on with it the best I can. DH has never taken a day off when i'm ill. He's working from home today to do pick ups, which is a massive help, but i still need to do the childcare. My mum is local but she works FT. Occasionally if i really seem ill (like yesterday) she is kind and takes the afternoon off and helps.Which was great as i slept and she did everything - even batch cooked some casserole for us. But if DH is doing it he watches the kids and nothing else. Wont cook or tidy up. Fingers x it passes quickly for you.

Thanks, my DM is nearby and only works 2 days a week but just so happens it's today & tomorrow. I said to DH this morning I could ask her but he insisted on helping. He hasn't done anything either, the kitchen is just a total mess but that can wait. I think I've stopped being sick for now, really need to get some food & drink inside me now though.

MrsKoala · 10/01/2018 22:40

Are you feeling better Boodles?

Going to be a tough night here DD appears to have tonsillitis, or at least be unwell with something. She has been on the boob and crying since 2pm. I'll sleep with her on the boob all night as every time i take her off she screams and seems like she's gagging.

So completely back to square one.

FannyTheFlamingo · 11/01/2018 05:41

I thought when we got back home after Xmas that we would be back to square one, but it only took 1 day to get back into the routine, so you might not be completely back to square one. Tonsillitis is a bitch especially for little ones. I'd be doing the same as you, whatever makes DD happy and comforted.

Hope you're feeling better Boodles

We had another bad night. Awake at 2am for about 20 mins and then up for the day at 5am. Really don't understand how she can sleep through and then not? So frustrating.

boodles101 · 11/01/2018 08:47

Felling slightly better thanks, have managed to keep water and some rich tea biscuits down. Will try some toast in a bit. Had a rough night with DS too and I was going in several times so ended up bringing him in with me. Think he had belly ache and lots of wind. I've dropped him at nursery so I can have a day in bed to recover and hopefully feel back to normal by this afternoon.

drinkyourmilk · 12/01/2018 09:47

Noodles and MrsK- I hope you are both on the mend now.
How's your dd MrsK?
Fanny I think the babies are just ensuring we know who is boss! I had 3 nights where dd just screamed and screamed in her cot- do she ended up on the boob all night, then last night she went down and needed nothing more than a gentle 'shush' (eleventy billion times) until 5 when I brought her in with me. Bloody fickle!

drinkyourmilk · 12/01/2018 09:48

Noodles? Boodles I meant

FannyTheFlamingo · 12/01/2018 10:33

DD woke at 4.30 this morning, so I did CC for half an hour and she fell back to sleep till 6.30. DP is away till Monday night which means no snoring! So I hope she has 3 good nights so I can actually get some good sleep. TBH I miss having her in my bed and wish I could bring her in when she wakes up but I just don't think it's sensible with the new baby coming Sad

Hope MrsK and Boodles are feeling better??

drinkyourmilk · 12/01/2018 19:50

I have loved sleeping with her, but I'm ready to stop now I think. It's so nice to lie in any position I like (and I used to feel bad about farting in bed as she was lower than me- now I can toot to my bums content BlushGrin)

MrsKoala · 12/01/2018 19:56

We are on the mend here. I've got a hacking cough and DD is still on the boob all day and night and her nose is running constantly, but she is happier in herself. She had a late nap today so is still up. I'll let her cosleep again tonight and then try to get back on track tomo.

I will really miss them in the bed. We all love the cuddles. I find it odd when women i know say 'oh DH wouldn't like that' etc as DH is even more for it than me!

I'd be happy for DD to continue cosleeping if she actually slept - like the boys did. But she just doesn't.

boodles101 · 12/01/2018 20:02

Felling better here thanks everyone, went back to work but have only managed to eat a few bits here and there.
DS has an awful cough and has lost his voice. Not sure if that's due to a sore throat or just the amout of crying he did over the past few days. He has slept terribly and I've ended up bringing him in with me. Last night I could barely stand to shush him so it was just safer to give in. I've got him a Calpol plug in thing to hopefully ease his cough tonight and get some sleep as I'm working tomorrow aswell.
His cheeks look like they have literally doubled in size today, is that even possible? Could it be due to teething? I honestly feel like I dropped my baby off this morning and I picked up a fully fledged chunky toddler!

boodles101 · 12/01/2018 20:30

DS has woken twice already since going down at 7pm :-( guessing it's another tough night for me.

FannyTheFlamingo · 12/01/2018 20:41

DD fell and banged her head so badly I took her to A&E, on the advice of my doctors surgery. She's fine, but has a huge, purple egg by her eyebrow. The doc told me I need to check on her in the night. I'm going to sleep in her room but will try to resist putting her in the bed with me. I've also just noticed she's got 2 top molars! They've come through without any bother at all. When she got her first few, her cheeks did swell up and she looked like a lop sided chipmunk, so it definitely could be teeth Boodles.

MrsKoala · 12/01/2018 22:27

oh dear Fanny. I hope she's okay. I hate those eggs they get. We're on first name terms with our local a&e! Both our boys have had to have their faces sewn up. DS1 at a special plastics unit when he was 15mo. Terrifying.

We're all up here. DH went out and everyone decided to wake up. Were watching Stickman and drawing electricity. i'm about to make hot chocolate.

MrsKoala · 13/01/2018 03:57

Been up with DD since 1.30. She is asleep upright on my chest but every time i lay her down she can't breath and chokes awake. Such a pain. I'm so tired and trying not to cough.

OP posts:
FannyTheFlamingo · 13/01/2018 06:02

Oh there's nothing worse than trying desperately not to cough when that's all you want to do! DD is literally the lightest, shittest sleeper ever. I'd already woken her up twice in an hour by being in the same room. I hardly moved, I was just breathing! So I went back in my room and lay awake all night hoping she was ok. Hope you all managed to get some sleep.

boodles101 · 13/01/2018 09:08

Oh no your poor DD hope she is ok and the egg goes down quickly!
DS was up from 3am, DH was trying to settle him so I could get some sleep but it wasn't working. He ended up bringing him to me and he settled instantly.
I've gone to work for the first Saturday since having him and Left them too together. DS did a big poo explosion just as I left Grin

drinkyourmilk · 13/01/2018 10:48

Oh no Fanny! Hope your dd isn't feeling too bruised this morning.
MrsK you must have the patience of a saint! I'd be raging at the world and everyone on it with so little sleep!
Enjoy work Mrs Boodles, even sweeter knowing you escaped poomageddon

We had an utterly shit night. DD woke every 20 freaking minutes. I ended up feeding her countless times. Didn't come in with me though- so that's something.
I'm hoping DH is doing tonight, he complains he's tired - but I've not had a single full night sleep since she was born.

MrsKoala · 13/01/2018 15:59

DD is still sleeping on the boob. I have hardly moved. She has slept all day and whenever i try to take her off the boob she screams. She also has the most foul runs and really loud stinky farts. I am wondering if it's the antibiotics i am on. I don't anticipate a good night. I am so tired and i have no idea how i'm going to do dinner for everyone later.

Cariad1988 · 13/01/2018 20:39

Hey everyone, my DD has had a bad cough for a few days now also. I really recommend a vaporiser and a nasal aspirator if they are stuffy. When it first came on I was unprepared and for the first night since sleep training in November she slept with me pretty much all night but now with the all the bits and bobs she is back to her normal 1-2 wakings. I'm on my own for the next 2 weeks as DP has gone to a retreat in Peru (ok for some, right?) so I'm hoping she keeps it up. Good luck tonight everyone xx

FannyTheFlamingo · 13/01/2018 22:11

@Cariad1988 which vapouriser are you using? I think DD has picked up a cold today, her first since we started sleep training and I really don't want to undo all our hard work. I use the calpol plug ins but don't think they're that great and I've got the nasal spray, but she hates it.
